Does the VS-1680 use compression on recorded data?
- The VS-1680 uses a "proprietary" encoding technology called R-DAC that was developed by Roland. This encoding technology greatly reduces the amount of storage it takes to store audio data on a hard disk without any loss in sound quality.

Does the 1680 record 24-bit words directly to disc?
- In MT-Pro mode, the 1680 is able to maintain the benfits of 24-bit audio through an enhanced version of our Roland Digital Audio Coding (RDAC) technology. Audio captured by the 20-bit Analog to Digital Converters is bumped to a 24-bit word length as soon as any processing is done (mixing, DSP etc.). The S/P-DIF inputs on the 1680 can capture audio directly in 24-bits, and maintain this word length.

Before audio is written to disc, it is processed by the RDAC algorithm, and saved in a special format which when read back from the disc, allows for restoration back to 24-bit. Though one of the obvious benefits to this system is reduced storage requirements, it is important not to think of this simply as data compression. RDAC uses a method of writing audio data to disc which differs from linear encoding, offering comparable (and in the case of MT-Pro, improved) sound quality, with one of the many benefits being the use of less disc space.

What bit Depth Do the S/P-DIF support?
- S/P-DIF as a protocol supports a 24-bit depth. As such, the 1680 can send 24 bits out S/P-DIF in MT Pro mode. All other modes get sent as 16-bits through the digital out.

(Resolution?) If you record in Mastering Mode (24bit) isn't the internal signal path of 24bit too narrow when you want to apply EQs, FX and so on ? (I remember that I've read that the yamaha 02R mixing desk uses a internal path of 32bit).
- Given the extended resolution of 24bit recording, quantizing error, even on audio data that started life as 24bit, should be considerably less noticeable than if the audio started life as 16bit.

Does The V-Studio Series use compression on recorded data?
- The V-Studio Series uses a Roland properitary Encoding format called: R-DAC (Roland Digital Audio Coding)
(Click the link above to go to the R-DAC page in the Support Center)

Are the VS-1680's Optical Jacks ADAT Lightpipe compatible?
- No, the VS-1680's and all V-Studio's optical jacks are not compatible with the ADAT lightpipe optical jack. The V-Studio optical jack supports 2 channels (stereo), the ADAT Lightpipe supports 8 channels. You can buy converters for cheap that can turn the V-Studio optical signal into a SP/DIF signal so you can make use of the second jack (1680) for interfacing with digital sound cards.

How Many Tracks can have using MASTER mode? 16?
- When using the MAS mode, which is a 16-bit linear mode that applies no R-DAC encoding, you are limited to 8 tracks of audio data instead of the usual 16. This is due to the high amount of data that the audio takes up in this mode, which the internal hard drive may play 16 tracks unreliably if not at all. MAS mode is suggested when working with material from other CD's that you would like to rearrange and reburn perhaps to make a mix cd. MT-Pro mode, the suggested mode to use on a daily basis, allows double the recording time and sounds noticably better than MAS mode due to the R-DAC technology that is applied.

Common Questions about updating your VS-1680 OS
- How do I update the OS? It doesn't have a floppy drive! - The V-Studio's OS Updates come in MIDI file form. This allows you to actually play the OS Update into your V-Studio via a hardware/software midi sequencer and your V-Studio's Midi In port. For more detailed info and step by step instructions on the updating process visit the Updating/Upgrading Section. To see the OS Update Changes/fixes visit the OS Tracker.

- I updated my OS to 1.022 but when I boot it still says 1.02 how do I know that the OS Updated? - The Loading screen only display's the OS version number in 3 digits like 1.02, therefore you will not see 1.022.

Tip: To check exactly what OS your VS-1680 has hold TRACK SELECT 1 and STATUS 1 buttons then power up your VS-1680. This will bring up a version screen that tells you the versions of things like the OS, ROM, etc. In the top right hand corner it should display your OS version exactly. Press ENTER/YES to continue the normal booting process. Please use caution when accessing any of your V-Studio's test mode pages. They are actually mean't for Authorized technicians and mis-use could cause damage. Do not attempt to adjust and params and you should be fine.

- What if the OS Update fails, is there danger that my 1680 won't boot up properly? - If your OS Update fails do not worry as your old functioning OS is still held in memory. When you reboot, it will load the functioning OS with no problems.
