Hmmm...here are some options:
* If this is a one-time thing, consider finding someone (a friend or a enthusiast on this board) who owns a 2480. They can take the 1680 files, turn them into a 2480 file, and then burn them all onto a CD as .wav files (I think) that are usable in some other audio program.
* If you're going to do this regularly, then I'd suggest just piping your tracks out of the 1680 (via the 8 analog or 2 digital outs) and then piping them into your computer (using some sort of "digital interface," say a inexpensive one like this or a more fancy one like this ...and there are many other alternatives too!)
does the 1680 work with a ZIP drive???? Yup! But not to transfer files for USE on a computer (as audio files). The zip drive will only backup songs, so while it can be used to store files (and then store them on your computer), you can READ them from your computer (because there is no available application that will take these files in their current format (which is RDAC, for roland digital audio compression), and convert them to .wav or .mp3 or some other more universal format.
Enjoy!

If I purchase a CD Burner for the 1680, I take it I can burn the files onto CD then "put" them into Cubase, sorry if this sounds like a dumbass question but I'm a dumbass

No, it's a good question, but you can't do that. The CD burner that attaches to the 1680 can only act in the same way that the zip drive does: it stores backups and song files, and no computer program has been developed that reads these.
Oops, actually, you can burn your 1680 tracks onto the CD burner as regular music tracks (on the CD). The problem is, this is somewhat unwieldy [edit: I mean unwieldy to use for transfering tracks. Not unwieldy for burning your mixes and such. It's unwieldy because it takes so much time, and doesn't burn but 2 tracks at a time: L & R.]
What most people do is transfer the 1680 tracks but piping them out through the 8 analog or 2 digital outs into some type of interface for the computer...and this is done real time.
Make sense?

The way I do it may not work for you:
I just run/connect the "audio" OUT from my VS1680 into to my "audio" IN for my computer and fire up a audio recording programme and record.
Some of my audio purist friends have fallen over in complete shock because the transfer is not "digital".
To be really honest most of those purists could not detect any difference when I played them a "digital" and "non" digital version.

With CD burning, you can transfer as many tracks as you want. You have to make it so one pair of tracks gets burned to the cd as one SONG. So you could make track 1 & 2 get burned as song 1 - L & R channels, tracks 3 & 4 get burned as song 2 - L & R channels, etc..
Roland is NEVER going to allow anyone to figure out how to do a direct transfer.
I even wrote a letter to the CEO of Roland International in Japan. I was amazed and honoured that he actually wrote me back, but as polite as the letter was, he just told me the same thing: No we are never going to do anything further to make our VS-1680 owners happy no matter what. We are going to focus ONLY on developing future products.
Sorry I can't advise you on a better way to accomplish this. People have been complaining about this for...well...what, about 10 years or so now?
There was even one person here who was seriously trying to figure out the algorithm they use to create the proprietary audio files, so that he could figure out how to convert them into wav files...but he was not successful.
Best of luck to ya though!

Hi, i am currently experiencing the same problem, i have recorded 8 drum tracks down to my 1680, and have recorded each track in to my computer as individual tracks so that i can do a good mix on there, now i want to record them back as individual tracks, so that i can mix the levels right, and then mix them to a stereo pair, but are unsure how to get from my computer back to my 1680??? also are there any tips for lining the tracks back up, because when i record them back, each track will be out of time with each other??? any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

thanks guys, Addman thats the whole reason I wanted to do a more accurate transfer, "not because of digital clarity" but so the tracks get sync'd up properly, its a real pain in the ass trying to do it by eye and ear, and even though I'm sure I do it right theres always that nagging doubt i've screwed up.

Firstly, if you burn each track to a left or right channel of a song on a cd, they line up perfectly, as the VS-1680 will burn each track from the same zero point, if I am not mistaken.
Secondly, (and this is just my personal opinion), if I am going to take the trouble to transfer 8 drum tracks to my computer, then I will mix them down on the computer, THEN transfer the finished stereo drum track back to the VS machine via spdif.
The way I operate though, my thinking is to either do the mix in the VS, or do the mix in the PC. Much easier to do the mix in the PC, as there is WAY more flexibility, as in available plugins, etc.
I just prefer to actually record the tracks using my Roland. Something about the A/D converters sounds better to me than anything recorded on a computer.

You can sync your computer and your 1680 up. Read the manual. You can also transfer them the way W did. I think a good way to do it is to record about 4 or 5 measures of click before each song starts and then use them to align the tracks on your computer.
