Hi! Would you like to review my latest song? It's called "Fire in my heart" and it's a Christian Dance/Pop song (or something ) I don't want the mp3 spread around too much, so if you want to review it, just post that you want to, and I will give you a "secret" download address by email or private message. (You won't get the file by email, just an address where to download it.) It's 5.7mb in size.

Boray, Really great job!!! Is that the vocoder from the VS1680? I love the depth in the mix. You place stuff really well in the mix with some nice panning / delay effect too. I bought the compilation 5 CD and I think your level of professionalism in this song surpasses your submission on that. It sounds neat, with plenty to grab the listener's attention.
I really like it. Thanks for sharing.
Rick

El_Gorgonzola, I sent the address to you too now...
RickVS1824, Thanks! It's not the vocoder, but the VS1680 voice transformer! It's used on all the vocals in the tune like an auto tune without the "auto". I set it to "robot" and used midi to play the melody with the vocals.
I used a midi seqencer (Bars&Pipes on the Amiga) synced to the VS. (Almost) all synth sounds comes from a Roland JV1010 going through a Behringer Autocom compressor into the VS. The guitar is an Ibanez RG270 through a POD 2. The vocals was Audio Technica ATM31a condenser->Behringer ultragain T1953->Behringer autocom->VS and then through the voice transformer. The bassdrum is actually the sequencers metronome through midi...
I did one cool trick in the mix that I never have done before, but I think I will keep that a secret.
I also used the MTK on the final mix.

Hey Boray, Me again...I listened to your tune a few more times. How did you get such strong levels with this tune? You mentioned using the internal MTK. Any magic there? Any info is appreciated.
Again, really great job! Shows what can be done with a home studio recorder when the person behind the "wheel" knows what they are doing.
It sounds cool in headphones too!

Thanks again Rick! The tune I made prior to this one is actually a bit louder and I didn't use MTK at all on that one... I simply compress most things before reaching the VS with an external analog compressor. This can be tricky if you have to record, perform and adjust the compressor at the same time. But if you have a midi sequencer synced to the VS, you can record the midi first and then listen to the recorded stuff while adjusting the compressor (and even change instrument) and then record it on the VS. Makes it a bit simpler. But I hardly compressed the crap out of anything on this song... I have the bass drum on one track, the bass on another track, a couple of synths+the rest of the drums on one stereo track. Then two other stereo tracks with additional synths that sends to the delay effect. Then there are three guitar tracks and two vocal tracks also with delay to them. Recorded in MTP 44kHz. Btw, I also have my input peak leds set to CLIP which means they don't light until there actually is an overdrive distortion.
The compressor I use is really the cheapest there is, a Behringer Autocom Pro MDX1400. Two channel compression for only something like $99.
Btw, I listened to your "Sunset". Sounds really nice! Great playing! But I can hear distortion at 0:49 and little at 0:26. (Sounds like it's caused by too much bass in left speaker). Also, if you not have tried it, I would try the MTK on it to make it all a little more brighter sounding.

Boray, Your ears serve you well. There is distortion and some untamed bass notes in the song Sunset as you indicated. Recording accoustic has been a real challenge for me. Regarding using the MTK I have much to learn...
Thanks for all the information regarding your new tune I appreciate the information and your willingness to share the tune and recording techniques.

All I can say is... WOW! What an unbelievable piece of work! Super-smooth sound, perfectly mixed, and everything in its place. This sounds fantastic even on my (daughter's) boombox. Excellent dynamics, song-structure, arrangements, efx... there's absolutely nothing that's out of place here! I think you really outdid yourself on this one Boray.
This really goes to show that it ain't necessarily the gear that makes the difference, it's the person running it! (A $99 behripper?!) Good stuff Boray.

Boray, you songs have inspired me to spend more time with my 1680!!!
Both songs are done real well. How much programming vs. live playing is there on Where to Go? I'm sure Fire in my Heart is mostly midi, right?
Good job!

OCOE, Thanks! It's only the drums on "Where to go" that is programmed. The rest is played (on both songs), but most of the recorded midi is obviously quantisized. Thanks for listening!

Boray,
I'm listening to the first song now. Excellent song, excellent mix. Nice job on the vocals. Classic rock is more my style, but I do enjoy music like this when it's done well. You really do a lot of nice work. Do you play live music? I think that's the quickest and easiest way to get a recording contract. I think you really should be trying to make a career out of your music, you have a lot of great ideas and would make a great producer. You should also put a link in the creativity column. If you don't want the song passed around, at least put a 45 sec. out there so that planeteers can see how much talent you have.

Really enjoyed the lyrics. Not into techno myself, so I won't bore you with my critique. Very professional sounding. Do you play any "real" instruements.

Biggcheese, Thank you very much! I am not playing live, but starting a music group is one possibility I have thought about. I am open to whatever God would like to do with my life. Time will tell. I am thankful for the musical talent God has given me. I'm beginning to think he did this for a purpose. Thank you very much for your encouraging comments!!!
Timster, Real instruments? Well, there are 3 electric guitars sounding simultaneously in this song, and everything else (except for the bassdrum) is synth recorded in real time from a midi keyboard. But I have quantisized most of the recorded midi and that's why it sounds more or less programmed. Thanks for listening!

Whoah. This is really cool. I wasn't expecting this at all. Boray, have you heard Joy Electric? I think you'd like them. But I think you're better. I think you could seriously do well off of this. I'm excited. I'm liking a fire in my heart better than where to go, but it still has a good sound.
