I didn't really want to do this but the cat was out of the bag and I had the information.

http://www.studioreviews.com/m16-460.htm

For you guys who like to watch train wrecks, there's a topic about this over at Gear Slutz.

http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?t=33354

No one can say that Studio Reviews only does good reviews!

This deserves another "Holy CHIT, Main!!!"

A single 460 shall be on the way for my broke ass! I'll give you a call on the flip side (Or you can call me right now at my on-file contact 281-488-xxxx phone #).

PS - That phase response does look CRAPPY! (Who cares if it actually sounds good on solo applications?). I'd also add I recently bought a pair of matched NOS amperex Bugle Boy EF-86's for my HHB Classic-80 Mic Pre, and they have WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much microphonics to consider using! The newly manufactured Siemens EF-86's have about 20dB LESS microphonics, and sound amazingly simular to the Bugle Boy's ! AND the Siemens were $40 cheaper for the pair!!! Goes to show, NOS tubes may be nice IF you get a halfway descent set, but the "better" current tubes are an improvement in lots of areas I find important (like NOT hearing the kick and snare "ring" due to a highly microphonic tube preamp placed in the drumroom \:\( )

Dot rocks!

Wouldn't this

 Quote:

account for at least some of the price difference? What if the Apex factory simply uses each and every capsule as is while the Telefunken USA factory really tests each capsule for conformity to specs? Just playing devil's advocate here, I have not idea how much variation/tolerance there is in the production of these capsules.

And of course the mere fact (?) of it being assembled in the USA would mean a huge increase in labor cost. Doesn't neccessarily mean it's any better than a Chinese manufactured mic, but if you want that 'made in USA' stamp on your gear you're gonna pay for the labor too.

There may be a little more to it than meets the eye... I'll gladly pay Groove tubes their premium to quality control and match tubes. Dot will have to fill us in on the news

Probably is Motown. I used to own an Apex tube and it sucked ass. I think it was a 460 too, but that was a while back before they changed the look. It was black.

Hopefully it sounds better but i ain't holding my breath. Apex is I believe the same company that makes Elite speakers and Yorkville stuff.

Looks like the SAME damn PCB (even the silkscreening is IDENTICAL) and Capsule, no? So, swap out the tube if you don't like it, and save $900! If you don't like the Apex, I'd bet you wouldn't like the m-16 either.

I'm gonna buy one from Dot today (if he stocks them). If I don't like it, I'll sell it on eBay. I think a $50 loss (on the resale of this mic) is worth the risk of possibly saving $900 for its overpriced counterpart, no?

Time will tell

This is not a sales ploy. I wouldn't do that. Anyway – Sound Pure doesnt' carry Telefunken or Apex. The mics are on loan to me from the manufacturers for The Listening Sessions and Studio Reviews.

Awesome link, Dan.

Apex is owned by Long & McQuade up here in Canada - part of the Yorkville grp, I believe.

I just emailed that article to a friend of mine that has a whack of Apex mics - he's your typical broke musician so was all over them. He has (2) 460's and is very pleased with them. They do HEAVY heavy Death metal vocals all the time and the mic seems to really work for that, but I'd imagine there's several more app's where they'd work.

I'm trying to get him to lend my one along with his Apex 210 Ribbon and test them out here for myself, cuz they are a smokin deal - especailly seeing that my inlaw works for L&M and can get me a discount, which he says, is "sick."

I have to admit that I've been shleptical ;\) about a lot of this Chinese stuff but, I ain't no gear snob and if it works, I'm on it!

Cos, I'd honestly rent one from L&M and try it again. There's a good chance you got a dud (but yours was black and the 460's are all silver now) b/c like a lot of the stuff from China, quality control can be a problem.

From what I've heard done with the 460, it ain't bad at all...pretty damn good actually.

That's right Baz, I held out for quite sometime before I bought one for that reason alone.

BearM kept on telling me I should get the 460. I kept on saying Nahhh.

I finally bought a 450 and I am soooooo HAPPY with it.
Did it ever make vocals go from a dime to a dollar bill.

I say get it

The Apex microphones are supplied by AVL in Taiwan as far as I know. The Apex mic is an exact internal design of this mic with just a slight body change...

There are much better tube mikes out there that sound and spec out way better for not much more money, but everything flows down to the budget, the room, the talent, and the users experience to capture the performance. Not everyone will get the same results as a Telefunken model with this mic.

I would think changing those variables would make the Frequency and Phase specs have more discrepancies between the 2? They are curiously simular, so I'd ass-U-ME the same equipment and rooms... Dot?

Anyway - the EARS will be the deciding factor reguardless...

why is it amazing or a surprise?
The chinese are making all kinds of stuff.
US owned companies are doing alot of their manufacturing over there. Chinese companies will make the same thing for different companies and put the next logo on it.

Did you know (I'm in the auto industry) that after GM got into china a company names Chery popped up after the same company was hired to build Chevy's?

No surprise here. We've always known a £2000 mic is not 10 times better than a £200 mic. You pay a lot for that last little extra bit of warmth or openness or clarity - whatever it is that the particular expensive brand in question offers.

Like they say, it's not what you've got its what you do with it.

This editorial addition has been added to the M16/460 test page at Studio Reviews .

 Quote:
EDITORIAL ADDITION: May 20, 2005

Since the bench test between an R-F-T M16 and Apex 460 was published earlier this week, Studio Reviews — an online publication started a little more than a month ago in April 2005 — has received over 50,000 hits in the last three days, and the M16/460 test page alone has had over 22,000 requests. Obviously we've been contacted by Telefunken USA on the matter.

This evening we ended up having an eye opening interview with Telefunken North America's CEO Toni Fishman. This new information we received from Mr. Fishman regarding the founding and modern development of R-F-T "Funkwerk" Microphone & Electronics, a new division of Telefunken North America, was so compelling and exciting that I asked if we could publish an interview. We were given confidential information and images of products currently under development. Studio Reviews will soon be publishing an official statement from Toni Fishman as well as an in-depth interview about his company's developments.

Editor, Studio Reviews

I’m surprised more people haven’t jumped on the Apex 460. It’s a cool looking, great sounding, versatile, and solid built mic. Ok, I’m not a big fan of the type of shock mount that comes with it, but it does hold the mic firmly in any position.

(Admit it Dave, you got the 450 because you liked the black casing, the extra few switches, and bulkier size… I think you were just trying to impress that hot chick you were recording, right?).

I have a pile of nice mics but I’m always looking for something a little different. After using the 460 for about 6 or 7 months now, forget about the low price, I can definitely say it should be worth a lot more. For some reason I’ve grown attached to using this mic. I find myself reaching for it first and wanting to use it on just about everything. But, sometimes it’s not suitable for whatever reason (just like any other mic), and I end up using something else.

It produces excellent results on vocals (both male and female), and on 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars. I’ve used it on drums to capture overheads (figure 8), and the room (omni and cardioid). It sounds good on just about anything. I believe the trick to this mic (other than using a good preamp), is to experiment “away” from the standard cardioid position. By switching it a couple of settings towards figure eight or a couple of settings towards omni, this thing can really open up and captures some great tones.

If someone doesn’t have a good large condenser already, this is easily a $1,000 mic for a third of the price. Tube mics generally have a higher noise floor but usually no more than a few db’s, and the floor is respectable enough with the 460 that it compares to many expensive mics anyway. Unless you’re recording “air” at ridiculous levels, you may never hear the noise floor of this mic.

What else can I say about the 460? I own it, use it, I love the tones I can get out of it, and the price is great too. I plan on getting a second one and I’d highly recommend checking this mic out.

I'm still trying to figure out why someone would buy a $300 mic that they haven't heard because they found out it's the same mic (or close) to a $1300 mic they haven't heard.

Does this mean the $300 mic is great?

Or that because a mic is $1300 it's good?

Or particularly that a mic that's 1300 but really has the guts of a $300 mic is good.

Why don't they just knock off an 67 or 87 for $300? Or 5. Or a grand. Hmmm.

Because it was $229 out the door, and I'm a risk taker ;\) . And, I wanted a multi-pattern LDC mic to play with...

If it sounds like ass, I'll eat ~$50 to re-sell it. Big whoop. I'll pay for "Hands On Experience" - especially when I can't find it in stock at the local dealers.

If the Shoe fits...I'll AT LEAST try it on and wear them around the block before I condem them.
