Hey, Drumkat, I'm here, and I'm sort of new to posting, but I've been reading the Planet for quite some time. My recording skills are weak, and I sometimes wonder about my musicianship, but I really enjoy playing, and I keep learning from the folks at this web site.
My name is Bob, and I'm an engineer who would rather be an artist.

i have been using the 880ex for about 2 years, and dont really have any plans to replace it. it does everything i need - i do classical and small ensemble work, and never need more than 8 tracks (i mix to an external cd burner so i can use all 8 and not worry about saving two tracks to mix to). it is portable, sturdy, never crashes, and makes outstanding recordings. my only real complaint is that i cant use 8 tracks in MAS mode, but frankly, i dont actually hear very much difference anyway. i have replaced literally everything else in my studio in the last two years except for this machine, so i have a real nice signal chain from beginning to end. using it has become very fast and easy now, like second nature.

Hi DrumKat,
I've been here since November 99 and I still look in every day. I bought a 1680, but I keep it permanently linked to my 880VEX to give me 24 tracks. I usually use the 880 as for my drums / percussion sub-mix.
I've spent a small fortune upgrading outboard gear and microphones over the last couple of years, but my VS machines soldier on. I love them.
And I love this place, without which I would quite simple NEVER have become as comfortable with the VS products as I now am.
Thank you all!
Martin

Good idea Drumkat! I've had my VS880EX since '98. I don't put the time into music and recording that I'd like, despite owning a music degree. Most of my life revolves around education - fifth grade! Someday I hope to pass the proficiency test and move on.
I have no plans to move to a new machine either as I'm but a poor boy. I also think the 880EX can do so much, I've no real need to move up other that to satisfy my gearlust.
I was also pondering the other day... HOW MANY ON THIS BBS MAKE THEIR LIVING THROUGH MUSIC?

Hi,
I'm Hano. I work at a reception desk for an international NGO. That way I'm keeping an eye on the VS-planet, as my monitor on the world that I love most. The one of Music and recording.
I am very pleased with my VS880EX and feel no need to upgrade. It's my hobby. I don't have any plan going proffesional, exept if I get an offer. But that will never happen. It never happened to me as a musician or songwriter either. Always having to run after the others and begging is not my best skil.
I hope my new Audio Buddy will improve my recording skills. I have always lived on a low budget, but got lucky with a lay off in 1999, so I had extra money to afford myself the VS880EX + a CDRII, witch I still found to be an expensive recorder and burner in 1999, but the best thing around for the price and what I needed. I realised from the beginning that I needed the Back-up burner. It also works on my former Mac and my current PC.
I regularry read the dutch "Music maker"- the brittsch "Future music" - and the former US "Computer music" magazine.
The effcets built in teh VS880EX where for me the way to come true, being frustrated with 4 track casette recorders an only 1 effect (on aux send). I think 2 effects is sufficient for good home recording.
Next...

I am lurking here every single day. I may only post occasionally, but I'm watching all of you very closely. I currently have a pair of 880vx machines that are resting. I am writing tunes for my next CD. Actual recording should resume in about 2 months.

Put me in the "I upgraded but still keeping my 880" category. I have an 1880 but I still use the 880ex (since Jan. '99). I keep the 1880 hooked up to my small home studio and use the 880 as a portable. The only drag is that I can't export songs from the 1880 to the 880 (I called Roland and they verified this). I have to transfer in real time using spdif and mmc syncing. I guess Roland assumed everyone who upgrades would get rid of their older machine. (The Orb Drive would be a solution, but is around $200).

Andy Rhody. Central Pennsylvania. Been on this board about 3 weeks. Recently purchased VSR880 and sometimes frustrated beyond imagination but love being digital with 8 tracks. Dabbled with recording since the 60's. Former full time musican in 70's road band ( top 40 and disco). Finding this board is like Manna from heaven. Thanks.

John Hipolito From L.A. California. (Bassist) I recently relocated to Minnesota (I wanna go back home!) Did the L.A. and Orange county scene for years, playing in ska and reggae projects in the 80's-early 90's and started heavily playing funk and soul, being that i was raised on motown. I have played for about 21 years now and have co-engineered and produced a couple of CD's in the past. Known shows where gigs with Tower of Power, and War, and even the Tony Rich project. Now they need to build a House of Blues out my way!! Coming to Minnesota has been very hard on me. I am struggling with finding proffesional musicians, so that lead me to buy my vs890 and xv3080 to atleast get my numerous tunes on cd, and possibly release yet another CD. Well enough of that, and I am extremely happy I found this msg board. If anyone is out in my area send me a line. Lets get together!

Thanks for starting this post, DrumKat.
I am still here too, as I still own an 880vx. I've had it since a few months after it came out, in 1997, I think. But I have been in that transitional process you are talking about, because I made a move to the Roland Studio Pack last spring, and have been "climbing the long mountain" of solving computer problems and learning the Logic software ever since. (My VS is on loan to a buddy of mine.)
Though I still check this forum pretty regularly, all of my most pressing issues are about the Studio Pack, where Eddie, techristian, wigworld and others have been swapping ideas with me. If I can solve a new "clicks and pops" problem that cropped up this week, I hope to get a submission on the Comp IV CD.
Logic Audio is awesomely powerful once you have pulled your hair out a few times trying to learn it. And the VM3100 Pro mixer has the two great VS effects modules, plus two separate compressors. And the recording is 24-bit. But if I can't get this digital noise thing worked out, I will have wasted a great deal of time and money.
Long live the VS!

Hi guys: I'm here and not planning on upgrading for a while. Just got my 890 this past July. I'm still learning to use it but I love it when I'm not swearing at it. I need 8 tracks when I record, I might bounce a couple harmonys together, but I use all 8 tracks, then burn to CD, then load it back in as a new song to compress and such.
I'm a UPS Driver, that would rather be a full time song writer.
I love this VS Planet.

It is interesting to read about the backgrounds of the readers who posted. I'm Louis Garbi. I'ver been a rock / jazz guitar player since the late 60's (that was in my mom's basement.) I bought the 880ex in Dec. '99. I really like it. It beats my old Dokorder in every way. I still do some guitar stuff, but the primary use is for acapella hymns. For me, vocals are a difficult thing to record. I've gotten a lot of benefit from this BBS. The users are courteous as a rule, and a lot of the info. is well though out.

I've read SO many great little Bios that I feel I must write more than 4-5 words about myself.
I bought my EX machine in early '98 but was dumb founded by it. I then purchased the $40 video from roland and learnd infinately more. But it wasnt until I searched for a 880 site that I found this little slice of heaven.
I've learned more off of this site than I ever could have before. Upgrade my software? Get a new easy to understand manual? Automix? Effects? diffrent recording modes? Diffrent interanl drive partions?
Its all been ansewerd here.. Thank you all, past and present.
I'm virtually finished recording a 14 song "demo" CD. It will be sent to Disc Makers in a couple of weeks to get mastered and reproduced. All because of the 880EX and you guys!
I am a professional percussionist with 2 bands in Northern Indiana/Chicago. I teach about 25 students privately and write all the music for our marching band of 165 kids. I struggle to make ends meet so I wont be upgrading anytime soon. But other than I'd love more tracks and more automix markers (and MAS recording of everytihgn) I love the machine. I've gone through 4 computers since I've had the EX and its NEVER crashed!!!!!! Best thing I ever bought was the overly expensive case, the exteranl roland burner (also way overly expensive for a 2x!!!) and my stand alone burner to use the digital I/O feature.
On Feb 2, 2002 (02/02/02) I will be getting married (for the 1st time and I'm 31). The CD will be done a week or two after that. Feburary will be exciting!
thanks guys for responding to my post!!!! http://homepage.mac.com/sonordrum/PhotoAlbum2.html

I got my 880 EX in Dec 99 and absolutely love it. Not planning on upgrading for a little while. Found the Planet about 6 months ago, thank goodness, and have collected a wealth of information from everyone that has helped make my 880EX experience much easier. I've been a light poster but I do check in and read a lot. I started playing piano when I was 4 and have been a songwriter since "73". Played keyboards and sang in a lot of bands in the 70's, 80's and 90's, some cover, some all original, but all fun. Currently working pretty much on my own recording tracks for a video movie idea that has been building over the years. Best of luck to everyone in this new year. PAULIII

i've been here a while, it seems.
i bought my original 880 and fx card for $2100 when it was the only machine of its kind. it makes me weep to see an 1880 for $1299 now...
the only upgrade i've made is my OS.
i use a burner that was loaned to me.
this past six months i've decided to add to my system, rather than upgrade my machine. i purchased a foxtex digital 8 track mixer with 2 internal stereo fx (makes me realize how great the fx in my roland are)to submix my keys/drums in, which i am now going to sequence with my pc and cakewalk pro 8(thanks guys for the advice)and sync to the 880(now to record guitars/bass/vox only).....all pretty inexpensively--the mixer was $280, the software $50, and the motu midi interface was loaned by my generous friend...who while not a participant here, he could be as he owns 2 1680s synced together.... i work in retail fulltime (lame)go to school studying art/design, am married (congrats, Drumkat--be happy and kind), have two small kids(4yr old boy, 1 yr old girl), occasionally jam with friends, and sometimes play bass for my forementioned friends band......i'm trying to get some of my tunes into latin-american advertising through a coworkers husband (you never know)but i'm not sure if radiohead/cure-like tunes would sell laundry detergent there!
this place is the best...
thanks for the help!

Hi, I'm Tom. I lurk here all the time. I bought my VS880EX last December, but had a hard time learning it. Haven't used it all summer, but I'm back into it now. Still learning. If it wasn't for the planet, I may have sold mine also, but the more I learn, the more I realize the potential of this machine. I play bass in local bands in my area, but I only use the 880 for my own home grown stuff. After having a tascam 4 tracker, I find this is an amazing little box! Great post, since I noticed that the traffic seemed to be a little slow lately. It gave me some time to dig into the archives. A lot of good info here!

Hey Kent, excellent idea you started! Long time no talk...
I'm Chris (aka Hook), and I've been using my 880EX since Dec 2000. Luckily, I found the Planet shortly after buying my 880EX, and it's been a plethora of information ever since (had to throw in my $0.25 word ). I purchased another 880EX via eBay back in August, and have finally gotten around to setting both of them up so that I can record 12 simultaneous tracks!
I've been a drummer in various rock bands in the Chicago area for the last 15 years. I'm currently playing in 2 bands..."Orange Whip", which is a cover band, and "The Regulars", which is an original band. While I really enjoy drumming, I love the recording aspect. I didn't really have any experience with home-studio recording before my 880EX, but I'd been in a few studios and was always interested in how the engineer did his magic. Anyway, both bands I'm in want to record, so looks like I'll be busy in 2002!
Being a drummer, both bands practice at my house, so I've got the advantage of all the band gear to use when recording...24 channel Mackie board, bunch of outboard effects, lots of mics, stands, etc.
I recently purchased a C1 for vocals and some Marshall MXL-603's for overheads and acoustic guitar. I also got a pair of Event PS-6 monitors. Now if I could just convince my wife that the basement remodeling we've been talking about should turn into a "studio building" project...ah, a man can dream...
I don't know why, but navigating the 880EX hasn't been too difficult for me. Once I got the idea that it's really 3 mixers in 1, things just seemed to click.
Welcome to all the newcomers to the Planet...you guys (and girls) are in for a great ride!

I am very new to recording and to the Planet. I am in a band (Blue Skye) in Central Virginia and most of our songs are original (our sound has been dubbed "hickey-rock" by the 11-year-old son of our guitar player). I would characterize it more of a rock, Celtic, blues, alternative sound with an occasional latin beat thrown in. Its nice that the music world has evolved to the point where you don't have to worry about whether or not you fit into a certain niche; just make your own.
This is such a nice Planet to have landed on; my thanks to those who have helped me solve a recent dilemma.
I work as a transcriptionist; I play as a singer/songwriter/percussionist.

I bought my VS-880 early 1997 -- I had a few problems with it losing data and exchanged it within the first couple weeks. I then used the replacement pretty extensively for the next couple of years. Then the hard disk went kerplewy and the studio was pretty much down(all this before I knew about vs-planet). I bought a mackie 24/8 mixer and two alesis XT-20's. I was using my 880 as an outboard effect unit (which it does well -- even with a dead hard drive). I found vs-planet on a local music board (http://wnymusic.com)and within a couple weeks, with all of your help, I have my VS-880 powered up with a 4.3 HD, upgraded the OS to 3.204 and I'm thinking about a plextor 12/10/32 (currently mastering to a philips CDR 775). I'm actually using the 880 to master (I use the term loosely) from the mackie and then burning a cd, for copying, with the 775. My name is Guy and I've been a musician all my life (started classical piano @ 5 1/2). I consider the electric guitar to be my main instrument (Gibson SG, Firebird, Les Paul -- in that order). My band is The Evictors (which has to do with volume & neighbors) but I also play bass guitar for The Enemies (Goo Goo Dolls Disconnected was written by The Enemies -- our only claim to fame) and I play the occassional keyboard track, as the Reverend Sting Ray, for a surf band called Terrell and The Torquemasters. We do most of our recording at RealLoudRecords.com but I've always liked recording in my own studio(I gutted the 2nd floor of my house and have a 18 x 30 room with cathedral ceiling and a small adjoing control room -- and of course I'm now a bachelor again). This website has been indispensable and I thank you all. Hopefully I'll be able to help someone else down the line.

Hello everyone, I am a retired aerospace engineer and space systems manager. I am really enjoying my new 890, although the learning curve is steep! I got it primarily to help my wife with her next piano CD. I will also use it with my pedal steel guitar studies. With some heavy thinking on my part and your help, I am sure this new venture will be successful. Allen

Hi, I've had my 880 EX since 1999. I recorded the CD of our musical comedy here in Paris. This site has been a fantastic help. I've been using it lately to remix songs I did when I first got it. Now, for important projects, I go into a studio.

Hey all, jfn here. From Central/East PA. Had the VS880EX for about 3 years now without any problems. Everyone here is great and has helped with even the smallest problems. Day job involves the repair/rewind of electrical apparatus. Fantasy job is to write music for a living. (Never giving up). Been getting more involved with ambient/electronica stuff, but am able to do just about anything. (Just wish I could sing better). With the 880 I offer a portable demo service for local musicians and am probably more of a gearaholic than anything. Thanks to everyone who has helped in the past and in times to come. The skills keep getting better. Site: http://www.enter.net/~songman with a link to JAN Services which is the demo service. Keep pursuing the arts! It's all good!

Hey all. I bought my 880 VX back in 1997 and it has worked flawlessly over the last 4 years. Major mistakes were using JAZ drives early on for SCSI storage (click of death on 2 different drives) and buying the Roland CDRW ($$$). I have been using my current configuration which includes several SCSI hard drives for extra storage and connecting my PC to the VS using digital I/0 for the last couple of years. I burn all my CD's and save all final mixes on the PC. My day job is software development mainly on UNIX including many years in kernel development. Have been using computers for music since the mid-80's and the earlier days of MIDI. Actually I have and still use the original Roland MPU-401. It has an onboard processor because the orginal 8086 computers were not powerful to handle MIDI if you can believe that. Back then Roland had a sequencer program called MPS. It was painful but state of the art during that time. Today I use Cakewalk and never complain
