im renting for a month a set of yamaha dtxtreme drums. i wanted to try them out to see if i liked them if my kids could learn to play them if they sounded good and if they recorded well.
so far,
i thought the sounds were okay played through the stereo or the headphones. the drum songs to play along with as lessons were rather hokey sounding but effective workouts.
let me say this im not a drummer just a singer songwriter who is a lousy drum programmer and i dont have a drummer i can record with and i figgured it cant be too hard can it?? its harder then it looks. i can do simple rythms but im no gene kruppa.haha actually i suck but i can get a basic track down.
my kids are eight and they loved the drums for the first two days. now they rather watch cartoons.
i really like the sound of this machine recorded. it sounds real fine. i dont have anything here to play for you but it does.besides i suck.
i have the drums for two more weeks but im heading toward not buying them. 1000 bucks is beginning to feel like too much for what i can do with this set. im thinking ill rent the acoustic set next a starter type kit, db basic beginner kit. i dont think recording or playing a acoustic kit will be a problem in my small recording space and i want to see if the acoustic kit is a better draw with the kids as it is noisier. i dont think ill ever be a drummer, you know how it is i got to learn to play the guitar sing and record better who needs something else i suck at. besides my job.
perhaps,i think ,ill start looking for a drummer that could record with me. my brother does reord with me but he visits here only once a year and lives far away. i know some people do record sending mp3 back n forth but im not there yet in my set up. mind you buying a computer for my space is cheaper then buying a set of drums......hmmm i think i might have talked myself into something here.perhaps the shed studio needs a computer with protools le more then drums. i have a monitor..just need a computer and protools le hmmm maybe i could do that for a grand eh?????
anyone else have a drum trial

Try recording just playing the bass and snare. Then record again to new tracks playing just high hat and symbols. One more time adding some toms floor toms and you got a fat sound.
Hey. It would only cost a little time to try it...eh?

There's all kinds of ways to get drums done. Actually recording an acoustic set is most satisfying, but also difficult and expensive. Drum machines, sequencers and MPC-like devices can work well for a lot of songs, especially those that don't require much finesse...but doing good programming isn't easy. The drummer I work with recently had a project to do that involved a lot of sampling and sequencing and we did a sort of test song to see how it could work for us. He played samples that were carefully done by us using a Trapkat into an MPC2500. In essence, the MPC was being used simply as a recorder since he did the entire song as one gigantic sequence. The result was good...really good and he kept his playing pretty basic although he didn't have to (it was that kind of song). This has opened-up some neat opportunities for us (and his other clients). He can now send me either multitrack audio (.wavs) of his kit recorded in the usual way. He can also just send me the midi file (tiny file) to dump into my MPC and I can then swap any drumkits I want into the song in a snap. He can also send me hybrid audio/midi stuff like just an audio track of the snare or the hi-hat and everything else in midi. If he's not quantizing, the performance still can breathe...or if the song needs slamming perfection he can do that too. There's lots of ways to get good drum tracks and sometimes real drums aren't necessary.

I would like to own a kit like that for one reason, nothing to do with music 'cos I'd still prefer to use discrete drums or a real drummer...but it would be a fun way to get fit and never leave the studio

grachus...
what wishbone sez...roland much better than yamaha. try lakeshore music.
you'll be happier with edrums for sound than a starter acoustic kit (but nothing can beat a full quality acoustic kit played well.)

You know I think getting a comp with tools is the better option. You can always get a drummer latter, If you realy do suck then what you hear acoustic or electric aint realy cut it. If your kids do like the acoustic kit then you might get a good drummer out of it,that would be cool to record as a family. You should be able to get a kit for heaps less than a grand. of course there is the tunning thing wich is the biggest part of getting a good recorded sound. Ah I shouldn't get started on drums I'll never stop.

Hey grachus, I have a set of Roland V drums, and also an acoustic set, and I use both for recording. The V drums are just so much easier to record with. Its difficult to get a good sound from live drums unless you spend a lot of time getting the environment right. If you ever decide you want to go the file swapping route, let me know, and I would be happy to lay down tracks for you.

Grachus, Buying accoustic drums isn't going to be cheaper...........It just looks that way. Yes, you can find a set of Tama's or something that are less than $1000. but the cymbals you'll get are going to sound like tin piepans. By the time you put some good quality cymbals with it, you're going to pass the price of the Electronics. Then you'll still have to deal with mics. I have all 3 in my studio, Full 9 piece accoustic set with Zildzian cymbals. A set of Yamaha DTXpress and a set of Roland Vdrums. Also have a Boss DR-880. I use the Roland set or the DR-880 more than anything else because it's just easier to record with and depending on how you mix them, they sound just as good as Accoustics with a lot less hassel. Not to mention, a lot fewer open mics to deal with. JD

I have the Clavia dDrum4 set since 98 and they are still magnificent. Always liked them because the pads have real Remo skins. Normal run of the mill things. Drummers love it.
The sounds were and still are very good, there are drum sets by all kind of world class drummers, like Kenny Aranoff and others. Right now, I use the set as trigger for DFHS (Drumkits from hell superior) or Digidesign Strike.

heh madmax i know i had the offer from you but i thought i try the rental first to try out the drum kit. also as i say im not a drummer and i wanted to find out how i do. well i find myself unable to keep the kit sounding like a drummer as i suck. ha. i appreciate your offer and sorry for taking so long to get to a decision. i had to finish the construction of my shed and thenget all my gear in ready to record.
my brother the drummer was here and he liked the sounds of the kit except for the cymbals.
i agree with the buying the kit thing now that you mention upgrades eeek.
the computer and the mp3 route looks better to me as it allows me to worry about what i do better the guitar and singing.
thanks for the offer guys and the advice. ill keep you in mind. i got some songs i got to work on.
