Hi,
Some of you may know, that there have been efforts to built a conversion tool that would do what Track Export does, but faster and without CD-R burning.
the latest built (1.23a 16.August 2007) can be found here: http://www.thegoodlibrary.com/VSWaveExport.html
This release contains the following updates: .) added support for 880VX, 880 and 890 .) Can create now the export path if folder does not exist (requested by bear) .) does not show a message box anymor if no roland drive is found (requested by karl)
no changes to export and decode functions, so there should not be any bugs in already working v1.22 functions.
As allways: It would be great if some of you can test the tool and report any issues.
Thanks!

Just to be clear about it, this is a program that runs on my PC and I have to connect my VS Formatted hard drive to my PCs hard drive ribbon and access it with this program to transfer tracks from MTP projects to my PCs hard drive in 24bit .wav format?
If so, Awesome! :thumb:

I'm 100% certain that Roland Engineers have an error-free version of this implementation written for the PC. Wonder why they won't sell this conversion program?

Is this an alternative to the V-Fire? I am using Win2000 Pro and V-Fire seems like it needs XP, this might be good.

No, VFire is realtime. This is a decoding program that reads actual 2480 hard drives that have been removed from the 2480, and the files are read to create WAVs.
The VFire will be quicker. Like the RPC-1 card was. But this is a cool utility.

Hi all,
Frank: Yes your assumptions are totaly right.
Randy: M24 should not make any problems. You do not need to copy the dll anywhere, just unzip and doubleclick the exe and you should be fine. Regarding the error: do you see the partitions of the drive in the list? do you get the error when you unfold one of the partitions? you get an error on every partition?
This is a gamma release, i'm sorry for all bugs in there, but it's great if you test it, so that i can fix them. It runs well on my machine. I'm not shure if i can come up with an updated version tonight. Maybe i'll have to publish a diagnostic version first, so that i can find out what the problem is.
did anyone get it to run correctly?
thanks!

LGPL.... a permissive software license that pretty much lets you use this product in any way you need for free.
details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License
Cool project by the way guys, glad somebody finally did it!
Why Roland doesn't provide a utility like this for their customers is the real question

When I pull the IDE harddrive out of my 1680 and install it in my PC, it finds it fine as a FAT16 drive. In fact it finds 4 partitions.
It has 2 files SONGLIST.VR6 and SYSTEM.VR6
However it does not show song files with the .vr6 extension, instead it shows DIRECTORIES with the names SONG0000.VR6 and SONG0001.VR6....under these directories are 9 directories with extension .RV and names AMKRRE, FEEFTC, IMEXR, OCMNET, OSGN, VENELTTS, YSCNRTK, YSTSME, but these cannot be accessed.
Is there anything special that needs to done to mount a VS harddrive in a PC?
I just barely remember there was something about this in the original web page that had the VS2WAV utility years ago (880 MAS mode only). Something about a byte in the FAT that needed changing.....but this page seems to be gone.
Anyone?

OK, here is a diag built:
http://www.thegoodlibrary.com/WaveExportDiag.zip
when started it opens an additional window where process steps are printed, can you please verify the output, or even better, copy paste the text printed in that window. I could imagine it's something todo with the f3 card (haven't got one) as these also store info on the hd.
or maybe its just a simple stupid english/german windows problem... well. lets see what diag brings up.
bear: i remember the 1680 HD was readable with the computer. i don't know whats the problem with your setup is, but the one folder for each project is correct, but usually within these folders there are only files...
cheers, and thanks for testing.

It is a catch22.... when the runtime error comes up it blocks the ability to cut and paste the error messages.....
However - manually copy -
Before the error
In Node Expand
when the drive is accessed and error occurs
In Node Expand removing dummy child (not very nice if you ask me) before ReadPartition 512 Bytes read from Drive Reading FAT now... Reading Root now Reading subentries... parsing directory... VS-880ST.25B
And that is it the error box comes up with runtime error 13. When you click OK the program closes.
But remember this drive is not being nice under windows either....

Danielo,
I just took a look at the modifications you made to decode.c.
With these changes, do converted files with this utility null perfectly with files converted by the built-in VS-2480 WAV converter?
It looks like this change basically implements a DC offset of -1. Probably completely inaudible. I guess the rationale for this calculation is that zero can now truly be represented using pattern 11111101. Otherwise, the rounding operation leaves a bit set in the LSB. For example, zero shift left 1, set the LSB bit to implement the rounding operation, then subtract one, will produce zero.
Cheers,
Randy

But is the implementation you are testing based on Roland's copyright information so it can reproduce the RDAC decompression exactly as Roland does internally in the 2480?
Ideally, Roland has all the proprietary information to do the exact decompression.
In any case, a big thanks to you guys for tackling this project. Best of luck and success to you!

Thanks Bear, this helped alot.
It is a german/us setting thing. can someone maybe try the following: set the date format to "DD.MM.YYYY" via windows locale settings and then run the app again. this is just to verify my assumption.
randy: i automatically compared the decode output to the output i got from my tesfiles (produced via track export) and they 0 match in ~99%, in ~0.9% they are off by 1 (rounding). Very rarely there is a strange thing happening which i guess is not going to happen during normal encoding: if the main samples(8 and 16) are -2^24 and the subsamples (e.g. 7) is encoded negative again, the output turns into positive. i guess this is not intended but happens due to an overflow in the vs decoding routine. Also note the additional shift by one in pattern 11111101.
Steve: you are pointing out an important thing here: we cannot guarantee that the audio output is 100% the same, but as you see, we did several checks and comarisons to data that was created via track export. if you use it for your music is up to you. maybe try it and have a listen if you can hear any difference.
cheers.

I tried the program on WinXP pro and got the following error "Stop statement encountered" I could see all my partitions though but program wouldn't run. I'll try on win2000 pro next.

Danielo -
Yes settig the date format stopped the runtime error....
Now I get "No songlist.VR1 found on partition"
Diag dump is
VS-880ST.25B SYSTEM.VR6 SONGLIST.VR6 SONG0001.VR6 SONG0000.VR6 B SSYSTEM~1. ?M?SID6361.TMP ?M?SID636E.TMP ?M?SIDA57B.TMP ?M?SI1D08E.TMP ?SS11FD.TMP ?M?SI49E55.TMP sub entries read
Wah!!!! I want it to work.... I don't understand why I do not see the file structure others describe on the harddrive from my 1680.....

this is because you are using the 1680...the programm is currently not adjusted for the 1680 and i would not expect it to work... sorry.
Ismellelephant: yes there are some stops in there. These are cases that i did not expect to happen, or i just forgot to remove... i'll have to take look. did you use the diag version?

Did you change the date format to german as danielo requested? No I missed understanding the date info. Can you dumb it down for me? I ran it again I moved the main box and got an output box reading "InNode expand"

If so, I think this is the coolest thing in the VS world I have seen in awhile.....
