If I were to connect a line from the monitor output into an input line then play a mono track whilst recording the track onto a stereo track? Will it fry anything? Will it then lose quality as a stereo track?

It seems to me that you are asking about a process which can generally be accomplished more simply by bouncing tracks internally. I don't recall which VS you use - but if it's the 1680, then look up the section(s) on track bouncing, or combining tracks. Start on pg77 of the pdf user manual (the main manual), or find those sections in the hard copy and see if this works for you.

You will have complete control over where each track is bounced and/or panned in the stereo field, as well as being able to control the use and/or inclusion of effects. And you will be able to accomplish this task without concern over possible feedback loops and routing issues that must be dealt with when using a physical loop back from an output to an input.

If you must use a physical loop back to accomplish your specific task, then choose your output carefully.... maybe try using an Aux out instead of the monitor out? It might be easier to set up your routing to avoid feedback loops.

I may also be missing something obvious and simple about setting up what you want, as I just woke up and I am still actually asleep, I think. \:\)

Thanks, UTD. My first idea was to bounce, but I'm still learning about bouncing mono to stereo, stereo to mono. I thought for some reason you couldn't bounce mono to stereo and take advantage of the steteo field. I'm still learning about the stereo field.

If you were to bounce a stereo track panned to the left at 20, and then you bounced that to a mono track, how would that sound?

I just tested bouncing. It's easier than I thought.

I also test bounced a stereo track panned to left 30 onto a mono track. I know how it sounds now.

Good enough then - I'm glad you are figuring out the process.

Is there a function available that allows you to add one track to another? For example, add track 6 to track 5. Or add track 9/10 to track 7/8.

Track bouncing is the process/function. That's pretty much it.

You can create what I call a fake stereo effect by duplicating a track and then moving it very slightly (1 1/2 ms) backwards. Also, if you equalize the original mono track and duplicate track differently the effect will be more pronounced.

As usual, excellent advice from Up... a tremendous resource to this site for years!

Thanks UTD. The bounce process is everything I was hoping it would be.

Heartwaves: If you duplicate a track then bounce the new track back to the source track, does the revised source track become more "rich"?
