Hello all. First time poster. I have a question that I cant seem to find the answer to on here, google or the owners manual. When I have an instrument input into the 1880, and the status button is green, the sound plays just fine. But once the status button is red to record, I can't hear any sound, nor does the 1880 register any sound. It seems to be intermittent, but I'm sure it's something very easy.

Hi - hope you find a quick solution.
There's not enough detailed info here for me to feel confident with a solution, but I will try a couple suggestions.

Assuming that you know your way around the machine at least enough to normally get record and playback goin on -

Check your channel routing from input to track mixers.
Make sure the input you're using is being directed only to the track channel you want to record (to diagnose with the least number of routing variables).

Check that your track and input mixers are not muted.

Check that the channel faders for both track and input mixers are turned up - turned up to 100 is the best place to start.

Make sure you haven't inserted any FX (or placed any FX in the path, for the purposes of figuring out the problem.

Make sure the PLAY status button is on REC.

Make sure you are viewing the right meters when checking for signal. Live inputs signals should show up in both Pre and Post position on the input meters.

That's all I've got for now. I need more specific details from you and/or access to my own machine, in order to be of much more assistance.
Good luck.

Thanks uptil. I haven't been on the 1880 in a few days. I will go down your check list hopefully tomorrow. I don't know the machine that good yet but I understand everything you posted. Thanks.

It takes a little longer while to get the philosophy of the VS architecture...I've been recording with a 1680 since the late 90s and still got stumped, especially after a prolonged absence :-)

The issue was fixed. I'm not sure how. I went down the check list and everything seems ok. The issue now is the instrument will play fine live through the 1800, but once the status button is red, the instrument volume level drops a lot.

I just re-routed the instrument to a different track and now that issue is gone. Volume level doesn't lower when status button is red.

There's some doubling up going on in the original track routing.... that's why the volume isn't right there.
Maybe you have your live instrument routed to more than one active channel at once. Then when you press record on the one channel, the other or others are muted, because they're not in record mode too.

If this is the case, it should show up and be evident on your input meters - especially in the PRE position.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to mess with it this week and figure it out.

This has been an ongoing issue; volume lower when recording (on certain/random tracks). There isn't any other instruments plugged. Just a sampler going into track 8 in this case (I just tried track 7). When auditioning the track, the pre meter looks good as it can get at almost 12. Once in record mode the track lowers drastically. I just recorded to tracks 1 and 2 with no problem. Everything on this song has been routed through input 8.

Try copying that good pair of tracks from ch 1 & 2 over to ch 7 & 8 - I would use track exchange for this, rather than track copy, in order to avoid possibly hearing doubled-up sound.
You can always use UNDO to put them back in 1 & 2 again, when you're done testing.

Do the confirmed good tracks play back in 7/8 okay?

If so, then we know that ch 7/8 track mixer section functions properly, as does that channel's physical fader.

You don’t need to move any tracks for that, just alter the routing.

Okay - I don't know the 2480 very well... but in order to test playback of ch 7/8 on the 1680/1880, etc. you need to actually copy or move the recorded tracks over to the ch 7/8 pair, since the recorded tracks reside in the ch 1/2 track playback routing already.

In the 1680, which I am most acquainted with, it's impossible to route recorded tracks in ch 1/2 over to ch 7/8 track mixer controls and/or have them show up on the 7/8 meters...... at least to the extent of my working knowledge. Is there some method to internally route ch 1/2 playback tracks over to another ch pair's track mixer?.... not that I am aware.
