Hello everyone, The new 2480 (CD) unit that was converted to a (DVD) wont burn a DVD Back up . I've burned to a CD-R But when I try to do a back up on a DVD RW it starts then spits the disc out and says operation failed.. I've tried with both .. a DVD - RW and a DVD + RW disc .. and the out come is the same. When in the back up screen and your choosing what drive destination it lists the drive as an SCSI0 CD-R Matshita DVD - Ram UJ-841s 1.60

Also the drive that this person either put in or re partitioned is partitioned into 1.1 GB Partitions with 10 or 11 different IDE things.. so only a total of 10 - 11GB of Drive ? I've already got a new hard drive and a new (back up dvd Burner) to install should I just flip it and change them or is there something im doing wrong? I would like to burn a DVD before changing .. just so I know I have a back up drive both Hard and DVD for the future if needed ... Any advice and direction is greatly appreciated ... thanks in advance ....

Try a DVD -R. I don't think these will do DVD RW, + or -. IIRC, _only_ DVD -R media work.

Are you certain this is a DVD drive? If the drive's original "drawer front" is present, there should be a marking stating that it is in fact a DVD, and not CD, drive.

Thanks Dk & Waterman.. I will get a DVD - R and see if that works .. but yes.. on the front drive drawer it does have the "DVD" logo and also the DVD RW logo ?? But .. being this was a scam / counterfeit item from the get go.... the guy may have put a fake plate on the front as well.. But like I said.. push come to shove I've already purchased another DVD Drive and Hard drive to switch them out if need be.. But was just hoping I could check this one and put it on a shelf when I did switch them .. as I would then have a "Knowen" to be working dvd rom drive as a back up .. just in case...

Just curious after your statements of ( these only do DVD -R _ discs... do you mean .. only these as in the DVD drive I have .. or are you referring to the actual vs2480DVD units themselves only came with the capability of burning DVD-R discs only and never have done RW's? just trying to get clarification .. thanks guys.. greatly appreciated..

The 2480 can only do DVD-R......... it's the VS limitation.

ok... thanks .. Up... and DK... Though I would like to be able to do RW's... for obvious reasons.. that is great news actually... at least now I know that when it comes to the DVD drive.. theres not more issues or something wrong with it. and when I put the new one in .. I now know not to expect the RW's to work.. and have a heart attack when they don't... So I thank you all for cutting that bit of panic and or frustration out of the equation..

Thanks for taking the time and responding and the answers everyone.. as always... it is greatly appreciated !!!.

It wasnt maxwel... It was "GARYWDYLS". On ebay.. its that one I sent you a link to with the Virdis .. etc.. He advertised it as a "DVD" unit.. it was a CD unit.. he kept trying to justify. and insisting it was a "DVD" unit as it had a DVD Drive.. then after explaining and showing and testing.. etc.. and sending pics of the serial number badge that says "2480"CD" he finally acknowledged for the most part.. but then still insisted I got a good deal ?? So I am dealing with it through ebay and Paypal buyer protection... it just sux that , that money is / was locked up cause I could have or would have .. bought that one on reverb that went for $1300.00 that thing was perfect.. I was trying to get the extra money together and buy it . I was going to offer 1600.00 for it.. then I seen it was sold for $1300.00 .. that was an incredible deal for that one.. but anyways.. it is what it is.. he got me ...... for now.. He's a definite scammer, fraudster, counterfeiter.. I left it on his feed back. the case has been expedited in the paypal claims department .. so we will see what happens..

update.. I went out and bought DVD-R discs and it is still doing the same thing .. starts to make a back up but then spits out the disc with an operation failed message.. ??? any other ideas ..

I reiterate.. this is not a a legit 2480DVD.. it is a 2480 CD unit that has been attempted to be converted to a DVD unit ?.. looks like it is running OS 2.05 or is it 2.50? some combination of those numbers ..

the difference between a 2.05 os and a 2.50 os is huge.... You should double check. I'm guessing that a 2480cd could not burn anything dvd unless it has the last, or second to last updated os that Roland released, before stopping support.

its 2.50.. I also have the latest update cd.. I will install when i switch hard drives .. Im just wanting to see this DVD drive burn a DVD .. before I replace the hard drive.. cause I want to go ahead and replace the DVD drive while Im in there with the new one I have.. and put the current one on the shelf so as to know i have a working back up if needed .. as well as getting verification that the new one I bought works and the person to whom I got it from is legit when advertising them as for the vs2480...

Hmm. I've used CDRW, but not the DVDRW.

YMMV, but CDRW burns seem to be more error-prone on my 2480s.

Kyle: The tricky bit about replacement optical drives in these beasts is the new drive firmware MUST be set to MASTER. AFAIK, this is not something the user can accomplish. If anyone here knows how, please share. I'd like to add the procedure to my bag of tricks. There is an eBay seller-- virtanen13, who is a reliable provider of optical drives for these.

Keeping a 'known good' spare on the shelf is prudent. It's prudent to keep a formatted HD on the shelf, too, as formatting is a _lengthy_ procedure.

I forget which OS upgrade made it possible to use DVD for backup? I'm thinking 2.05 is pretty old, upgrade to 2.5 or 2.4.

I've never tried DVDRW so I can't say if they work or not? It's pretty inexpensive to buy a spindle of 100 DVD-R, I figure a backup is a backup and also remember how many CD's I used to go through backing up stuff before DVD!

Yeah... I bought a small spindle of DVD-R ( verbatim) and they got spit out also.. The person who did the CD / DVD swap may have done it incorrectly, or used a drive that wouldnt work.. etc... I think I am going to try 1 more set of differant brand DVD-R and see if it works.. regardless of the out come I will then do the hard drive and DVD rom swap install the new 2.5 OS that I have and see what happens .. The New DVD Drive I have is from a user with a pretty high feed back score and 100% feed back rating and has sold a lot of these drives that it states are for the 2480.. so hopefully it is lagit.. if so.. I will go ahead and stock up on a few of them from this person .. thanks everyone.... again.. your time and effort to help me figure out and or resolve my issues is greatly appreciated..

Kyle, the 2480 isn't that particular about DVD-R disc's as it is with CD-R disc's, I have used nothing but Verbatim for both CDR and DVD. I go to Office Max or one of those places to buy.

I'm really thinking it's your OS? Check this:

I'm having the same problem. Would love to find a solution.

After reading this thread I decided to find the sticker with Serial number and model, and my 2480 states "VS 2480." It was sold to me as a 2480 DVD. Having said that, it is running 2.50 and has the DVD drive... CD's work great. DVD-R's do not.

It's got to be the DVD (recorder then) like said earlier they have to be set as master or like you said installation was not done properly by the previous owner?

Thanks Pete.. and Yeah.. I think it is a botched conversion.. especially given, how they partitioned the hard drive.. ( into 10 .. 1.1 GB Partitions ) ?

Any body know where the step by steps or have a file on there computer they could email over that walks me through the process installing a dvd drive into the 2480 cd correctly ?? I think I am going to tackle this task to day.

Kyle:

A link to the step-by-step CD--> DVD conversion.

http://www.rolandvs2480.net/VS2480CD%20t...a%202480DVD.pdf

Be inarguably certain that the replacement drive is set to Master in the firmware.

Use a static-grounding wrist strap and take proper precautions. Take lots of pictures as an aid to reassembly.

I just shot off an email to the Ebay seller I got the DVD drive from asking him to verify that he had in fact already configured the drive to "MASTER" as it was advertised as being for a vs2480 .. ( I did that after seeing your post to string jammer in the archives ) ..lol.. so funny you should be answering this post .. thanks.. I greatly appreciate it ...

Hi Power mac... Up date .. I re formatted and partitioned the HArd drive as the original person who attempted to convert it .. had it all screwed up... but yes.. after re formatting and re partitioning the hard drive also installing newest OS update .. I did get it to start burning DVD's.. I did finally hear back from the seller of the New DVD burner I had purchased and he did say it was configured to MASTER as well.. however I have not yet installed it.. tyhanks for checking in on me.. I appreciate it ... =O)
