HI - I'm new, this didn't exist when I got my first VS - thanks to all who make it happen!! I have recovered a song from a data CD that was burned years ago, and being a little rusty using the vs 2480, I'm stuck. I successfully transferred data from the CD to the hard drive, and see all the tracks, however, only the master (17 and 18) will play. Can't figure out how to get back to the raw tracks, non-mastered so I can remix.....any ideas?? thanx BJM

On the 1680 (and others) there's an f-button that switches between a REC, PLAY and some other setting - f-6 maybe?
Anyway, this must be set to the REC setting in order to hear all the tracks.
You might see if this is the issue in your case.
Did you also import the old data to 2480 format after recovering?... or is this something automatically done on a 2480?.. I don't use the 2480 and don't know offhand. You might check to see that you've "unlocked"/imported the data properly, in order to edit/mix. Otherwise the song/project is play-only.

Brian, do you remember what mode the initial recording was in?

thanks, as far as I know, (10 years ago), I had mastered the song down to tracks 17 and 18 using v track 16 on each using the mastering room. then, going to PROJECT, then BACKUP, I burned the song data on the SCSI drive. That menu (BACKUP menu) does not let you select a 'mode' - I'm not sure what you mean by mode. It's frustrating because I can see all the tracks were burned to the data cd but it only seems to play the mastered tracks 17 & 18. On pg 180 of the owners manual it states that TRACK STATUS button for any track you want to play back is lit green, and I can't get any of them lit green, yet it plays back the 17 and 18 tracks. As to the rec feature mentioned by someone else, I have seen the rec box before, that you change with the wheel to something else, but I can't find it now on any menu. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated and tend to make me dig further into that narly owners manual

I believe the import/format functions are combined....thanks, as far as I know, (10 years ago), I had mastered the song down to tracks 17 and 18 using v track 16 on each using the mastering room. then, going to PROJECT, then BACKUP, I burned the song data on the SCSI drive. As to the rec box feature you mentioned, no F button so far has yielded it on a menu -- I have seen the rec box before, that you change with the wheel to something else, but I can't find it now . As far as locking goes I think if a song is locked there will be a emoji to the left of the song title that shows a pic of a lock. That is not next to my song title....Your suggestions are greatly appreciated and tend to make me dig further into that narly owners manual Roger that - BJM

P.S. I hv found the "rec" box - it is in the mastering room menu...since it seems that all the data (all tracks) were recovered from the backup cd and now is on the hard drive, I believe one can go to the mastering room and re-master (re-mix) the song to 2 tracks as many times as needed. The backup cd is still there to reload if any corruption occurs during the process. That's a job for tomorrow, but seems the most logical solution

Beginning on page 338 of the 2480 pdf reference manual, it says the following:
The Mastering room has two operating modes. When it’s set to: • Record—You can listen to the signals from all of your input, track, Aux master and FX return channels as you refine your mix and record it onto your mastering tracks. • Play—You can play back your recorded mastering tracks. Input, track, Aux master and FX return channel signals are silenced since their audio can now be heard in the final mix recorded on the mastering tracks... 1. While holding down SHIFT, press CD-RW/MASTERING. The MASTERING ROOM screen appears... To turn on the Mastering Room: 1. Set the MASTERING ROOM on/off switch to On. 2. To de-activate the Mastering Room, set its switch to Off. Selecting the Mastering Room Operating Mode The Mastering Room’s operating mode is determined by the setting of its STATUS parameter. You can select: • Play—to play back already recorded mastering tracks. • Record—to record new mastering tracks...
On the 1680, which is the VS i am most familiar with, the F6 button (bottom right, below the display) has three settings. M->Rec, M->Play, M->Off. M->Rec is the normal position. M->Play is the position the Mastering Room uses to mute all the tracks except the mastered stereo pair. This is also why all of your track lights won't change to green, except the master pair.
Setting this F6 button back to M->Rec unmutes all of the tracks again, allowing you to hear them/work with them and manually mute the master stereo pair, so you don't hear both the master mixes and the individual tracks at the same time. This is what it sound like you have described as your problem.
I don't know if the settings and physical buttons are the same on the 2480 anymore, but hopefully the description in your 2480 manual i sited above is helpful enough to get back to your regular mixer functioning. It sounds like you saved and burned your original backup CD with the song(s) in this Mastering Room state. Your CD is not corrupted and your tracks were never missing. You just need to re-enable your complete mixer functions again.
Hope this helps.
