Hi, Guys!! Any experience with the QPS rack units that came with the earlies VS2480? I got one with my VS2480HD but I think the CD drive is damaged because the CD tray doesn't open when I turned it on and it keeps flashing the indicators LEDs (although I didn't connect it to the VS when testing it, I guess it should at last open the CD tray, Isn't it?)
It has a CD drive and a compartment to connect an external removable SCSI hard drive... Could the CD drive to be replaced by a DVD writer? and can be a non-remobable internal backup hard drive to be installed on the hard drive connectors of the rack? Or what is the easiest way to back up a VS2480HD?

As far as I know, the external unit QPS accepts only on type of CD-RW because of the SCSI connection. I don't think it is possible to replace it with a DVD writer. In order to do this, you need to crack the VS open and replace the CD writer inside with a DVD.

I have an older unit on standby--as an external unit. Haven't been using it for years because I have been saving projects on the internal DVD drive only--but if need be, I have older archived projects on CDs that may be still available

No, it cannot be replaced with a DVD burner without a lot of extra work and finding the extra parts it would need. Same goes for just adding in another HD bay, too. It sounds as though the unit is broke, unfortunately. I'd recommend looking for another external CD burner.

First thing I'd try with the cd burner is to use that little emergency tray open hole - With the power off (so the thing isn't trying to operate) stick a paper clip end into it and push gently until the drawer releases its lock. Then pull it out with your fingers - there may be a disc stuck in the tray - that's happened a lot in my experience.

It is a shame that It can't be done... I like the rack option on those... I was thinking that maybe there is a way to adapt a DVD drive that is compatible with the VS and use some adapter for making it work. As I understand the drivers are on all the VS2480 with the last OS.

I have another Plextor unit (silver and blue colored) that has the faceplate cracked but it looks like it works fine... I was able to make it play CD audios on the VS, yesterday.

Yes, I did it but it changed nothing. the unit doesn't run when I turn it on. It just keeps flashing the LEDs only...

I was also checking yesterday, that there is some success in using CF to SCSI converters as external storage media. Maybe That is better than using CD burners, or, Is there any SCSI DVD drive that you can recommend to me?

Not sure if this will work for the rack unit, but it's works great on the vscdr2 unit. You'll need the panasonic dvd listed and the Acard AEC-7720U, the price on the acard has jumped through the roof, can't remember what I paid for mine at the time, but it was cheap, not so much anymore.

cd/dvd swap.

Looks nice, but the price of those Acards are high now... I also have a Plextor external CD drive too, I guess it might work with that too? The SD cards using that SCSI2SD also look promising as they are cheaper than this Acard.
