This is the third song I've done for a EP project I'm working on - I'm trying to do six ballad - songs I really like. The first one I did was Shanendoah the second was Till There Was You.

I know these songs are very simple tunes - but they are so difficult for me to do - so meticulious.

By the time I got done with this one - I had worked so hard on it, I thought that it turned out badly - I'm still not sure if it's any good - or just boring dribble. But, my wife just came in the studio and I played it for her - and she started crying - so maybe it's ok.

Anyway - here is my rendition of If. Thanks in advance to all of you that take the time to listen and comment.

it's nice. A tough tempo to play and you did well. Great song choice. Nice tasty licks. I might be tempted to separate the two guitars tonally, perhaps making the brighter be the melody and darkening or spreading the rhythm one

Thanks Kelly. Playing within this tempo is really the hardest part of doing a song like this. I understand what you are saying about trying to differentiate the two guitars - I've been struggling with that - right now, they are really the exact same tone and same effects - one panned 25 degrees right the other 25 degrees left. I'll have to play around with it - I think it needs some kind of seperation too.

Thanks again.

Amazing song. I have done it in my "solo acoustic" act.

Recording sounds nice enough, though I'd like to hear a time reference? (Shaker, something...) Seems you really emphasized a certain beat division in your playing that is even slower than need be.

Mark, I enjoyed it very much. Your tone is killer. I agree with what Kelly said about differentiating the two guitars finally. For example, I would record the chords with a neck pick up and the melodic part more with the bridge or combined bridge and middle pick up.

I also have a wild idea of playing this with more than two guitars, but that's up to you. Then again, you could break into a cha-cha. LOL

Thanks all - appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

Marty - I recorded both tracks using the exact guitar set up. Maybe on the next one I do I'll do it the way you explained above. In the meantime, maybe I can eq them to sound a bit different. Thanks so much.

Mark - great job vamping over the top of those changes. Totally got what you were doing with that. Also a reminder of a great song I have not heard for years. Nice!

Mark, great idea and execution! I'm in the same boat with everyone else, though… right now it sounds a bit like a four-handed guitarist, hard to differentiate parts.

If I were doing the mix, I'd have the guitar playing the changes run through a bit of chorus and split hard left and right… or perhaps a very light phaser or flanger (after all, it was the 70's, right?) but still split hard left and right.

The melody line would be straight dead center, and have a very warm tone… think of it as a singing voice. Think of Tony Bennet or Frank Sinatra, a very pleasing timbre.

But that's just my $.02 U.S. \:D

rhythm and moose - thanks for listening. Moose - I'm working on a couple of different versions of this now using a flanger and phaser, maybe even try a bit of tremelo.
