Kind-of a mixture of stuff. Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, a couple Neil Young, a couple Doors, a couple Grateful Dead, a couple CCR, couple Janis, couple Lucinda Williams. We learned three songs for this gig: "Fortunate Son", "Jet Airliner" (the Steve Miller tune a friend of mine used to call "Big Ol' Jed Had a Line On"), and "Going to California" by Zep.
I'm the bass player and sang some, also set up the PA and the mix, tuned and setup guitars, etc ...

Cool! Looks like a bucket list thing. But who would think to put it on a bucket list?

No, I'm in the middle, between my pal Elizabeth, our singer, and John, the keyboard/mandolin player.
I think there are snippets of audio somewhere from this gig but I don't have them.

Seems fortunate that there are enough musicians in your "area" to form a band. A good happening and great memories for everyone there. 🤗🎫🎸🎹🎤🎼🔊

Actually that is true. There are side mount machine guns in those airships. I didn't mention: we were flown to the show. They dropped a helo down on Great Massoud Road, right between the east side of the Embassy compound and the west side of the Embassy compound, and picked us up in the middle of the road and flew us there. We are required to wear helmets and vests.
I really so wished we'd had time to make a big enough sign to stick on the side of the helo. That would have been ace.

Music in Afghanistan. What a good thing. I had read somewhere that the Taliban destroyed musical instruments and Afghani musicians buried theirs to save them, to be resurrected after the Taliban were pushed out of their areas.

Hahaha, SkyWave.
The Taliban ... yes. They don't like music. The Talibs are a tough crowd.

great pictures. Now I can actually see the production. Love those JBL stands, upholstered stage, red draped mixing table! With the stuff on the walls, I bet the hangar wasn't bad sounding. success

I will have to see if there are any pictures of the *big* production I asked for your help with, the stuff on July 4. The stands they built for those speakers are a fantastic design and that stuff worked perfectly, I could hear it from across the street, you were absolutely right. Those JBL speakers sound fantastic and boy are they powerful. Four of them were PLENTY.
We only used the two on the little tables for the hangar. The truck is only so big after all. I'll see if I can dig up a picture so you can see the 4th of July stuff.
You were a huge help, thank you. Did you get the box yet?

Looks like you mic’d the drums, one on the bass And then one point at snare? Ive been curious how I could use two two mics on kit, was think of overheads but anyway, what was your setup and how’d it work there?

Yes, I used two: one that sort-of generally covers the snare, hats, and tom, positioned kind of between all three and pretty flat on the EQ. Then one on the kick. My logic for doing that was that there are four vocal mics up front, of which most of the time only two were really used (mine and Elizabeth's) - our guitar player and our keyboard/mando player only sang from time to time. So while not exactly overheads, they were going to pick up the other stuff from the kit. It worked out generally OK, though three mics probably would have been better.
Also, though, the mics I had to use ... well, some of them were pretty duff.
With three, it's like this but the third mic I set up as an overhead over the other toms/ride. I've had pretty good luck with that setup, actually.

Well - not exactly. We actually have a band name that is something else, but that band name is [redacted]. It would have black magic marker over it if I wrote it. We have kind of a logo, and you can see there's another word there, but [redacted] is printed over it.
I am not sure, even now, if I can tell you what the actual name of the band is. It is - my hand to God - classified. So unless you have a clearance and a need to know, I am not allowed to tell you.
I actually recorded the four of us - me, the ACOM, my pal Elizabeth, and John, our multi-instrumentalist - doing 10 or so songs the other night. I made a huge mistake that is giving me headaches - I neglected to use a ground lift switch on the guitar amp, so some of the tracks are kind of a mess - using a filter helps, but there's still this buzzzzzzzz in there. We'll see what I can figure out. I may end up just trying to record new tracks over them.
In that configuration, just the four of us, we did not sound half bad. I told them I'd add a few additional guitars and some drums here and there and presto, we'd have a record.

Curious why the drummer used in-ear monitors and had his own floor monitor as well.
