I have a Yamaha DD-75 which has drum pads and a full set of MIDI voices. It was released in 2017. Yesterday I took a project which had been mapped to MIDI and did a hardware recording because I wanted to run the tracks through a tube preamp. Real time, all morning.
It wouldn't be worth mentioning except that I was able to finally achieve the "user friendly" sound I've been looking for. It's actually exciting.
The DD-75 has only a headphone audio out which I am sending to two direct boxes. The signals are then split from each box, with one output going to a tube preamp and the other going to a compressor. I ended up with two stereo signals, one with tube warmth and the other with compression which I mixed together. Real old school.
The result was stunning. The tube warmth combined with the clarity made every track come alive. The tracks have that old sound so often missing from modern recordings.
