I have a Yamaha DD-75 which has drum pads and a full set of MIDI voices. It was released in 2017. Yesterday I took a project which had been mapped to MIDI and did a hardware recording because I wanted to run the tracks through a tube preamp. Real time, all morning.

It wouldn't be worth mentioning except that I was able to finally achieve the "user friendly" sound I've been looking for. It's actually exciting.

The DD-75 has only a headphone audio out which I am sending to two direct boxes. The signals are then split from each box, with one output going to a tube preamp and the other going to a compressor. I ended up with two stereo signals, one with tube warmth and the other with compression which I mixed together. Real old school.

The result was stunning. The tube warmth combined with the clarity made every track come alive. The tracks have that old sound so often missing from modern recordings.

headphone audio out only? I think I'd pass and pick up an 'older" model.

Glad you got the results you wanted.

It's not about the module; it's about recording from a DI through two preamps; one tube and the other with compression. That's what's given me the warm, dynamic, clear signal up front I've been looking for.

Our DD 50 has just a AUX/HEADPHONE out -- - Usually just use the MIDI function == and have 3 Kurzweils with 20 outs total ..

I've always recorded keyboards as audio when there are tracks available. ONE of the reasons is so that it can pass some analog tone shaping circuits--limiter....EQ....maybe just the transformers in the Burl....

the best I ever heard the Kronos piano is when I was demoing an analog mid/side matrix for someone--and I could use my stereo EQs in M/S mode to sculpt it before it hit the ADC....

It's not the ONLY reason....but, it's one of them.

This really isn't about the module. I used it because it's what I have. What I got by sending the signal from the direct box to a Behringer tube preamp and the preamp and compressor in my Roland V-Studio 100 was both warmth and detail.

I hear ya Slab. Some people still get kicks throwing bottles off ships, some like putting ships inside bottles.

Keep following what pleases you and you will be fine. \:\)

PS: The people who throw ships in bottles off ships are just weird.

Maybe I need to rephrase: I have also always found that recording ‘midi trigger d digital instruments’ by way of analog gear produces a better sound that just plugging them in and hitting record.

Jammin' with the Yahama DD 50 back awhile ... stereo out and then we played along -- just tap a pad and it changes notes -- wish I knew which one .. just smack a drum & see where it goes ..
