I do that with my lawn mower cable too. The real advantage is in his last point. The cables "unwrap" without twisting. The underpaid loop cancels the overworked loop.

The over-under method. I always string mine out and wrap them one direction. It drives sound guys crazy and I enjoy that. My cords last forever. The biggest danger to mine is losing them or having some numskull set a piece of heavy gear on them.

This wrapping technique I learned in connection with boats. Coiled this way, a line can be thrown and it will pay out into a straight line. Lines, audio cables, ropes, hose-pipes, etc., should all be coiled this way. Basically it’s a figure "8”. Try this with your garden hose and see how easily and non-kinked it uncoils for use. It'll add many hours to your life!
