.... sounds like a breeze. But..... since I have an astigmatism, am near sighted, and have a bank account, they have decided that I should go with the superdooper expensive lenses. I don’t horribly mind the extra expense if it works out. But whatever I choose is mine for the next 30 years or so.

He wants to set it up so one eye is perfect for far, and one is perfect for near. My brain will just balance it out and it will look normal to me. But..... I have been phucked over by my brain my whole life. I programmed it myself. I set it for a Rock Star. And it thought I said ‘Chubby Truck Driver’. Well..... he’s only doing the far eye first to see how I would deal with this set up. But that’s $1500. The next eye being another $1500. Soooo I have time to just have both eyes set to far, and then ware Reader glasses for close up. But then Im still out $1500. In other words, it’s a $1500 gamble. My insurance will pay the rest, just not for the extra special lens.

I knowI a very blessed to even have insurance and a small bank account.

Had mine done when I was 59, I think. Be 62 next month.
No way would I go for what they suggested.
If you are going to pay extra, get the far distance Toric lenses.
Yer gonna be using magnifying cheaters to read anyway, NO MATTER which lenses you get.

Yeah.....Toric...that’s the name of the good ones. But those are the ones that they want to play with my brain with.

You are the customer. You are the boss. Don't let them do what they want to do, make them do what you want done.
Both eyes with toric lenses seeing as close as possible to equal. At least that's my opinion and it's what I did.

Would go for the “;old” tried and reliable. Both Mom and Dad have had the surgery and went for the “ traditional” way. Our eye doctor said, “ we can do the new fancy lens if you want, I can’t talk you out of it....”. Kind of winked saying “ go for the traditional way.
YVMV....your vision may vary...

Definitely go for the toric. However, "toric" doesn't mean the same thing as monovision. Toric means that your astigmatism is corrected. Monovision means that one eye sees far, one eye sees near.

For what it's worth, I used to have contact lenses with monovision and I got along just fine. However, my surgeon advised against it, so I stuck with his advice.

End result after cataract surgery? I went from 20/700 to 20/25 (20/15 with my glasses). There's a world of difference. And I have no astigmatism now.

Just out of curiosity, what's your visual acuity now?

The Acysof Toric lens implant is a specially designed intraocular lens implant that is used to reduce or eliminate astigmatism during cataract surgery. Astigmatism refers to corneal curvature that is elongated or flatter in one axis, and shortened or steeper in the opposite axis.

Okay, then… I have some other experiential advice for you.

Your eyesight will be vastly improved after surgery. Everything will be brighter (maybe MUCH brighter) and colors will be more saturated. Sounds great, doesn't it? And it is, believe me.

However… make sure to give yourself some time to get used to all of it. I think my brain went into overdrive with all of the new bandwidth coming in. For whatever reason, I had insomnia problems for a while afterwards. I wasn't expecting that, nor was my surgeon or eye doctor.

So definitely go forward with it, but know that you'll be seeing things a LOT differently. If you want to take this offline and PM me, I'm fine with that too.

My buddy went the most expensive route... still ended up with cheaters, that he wasn’t supposed to need.

Moosey,
So u bailed on the monovision (near/far) contacts when you got the toric implants.

Did your doc say why he recommends NOT going near/far?

Do you miss any of the near/far capability?

Appreciated all the opinions and advice. I’m pretty sure I’ll have them both set for far distance. Then for $2. I can ware readers. Otherwise if I need glasses it’ll be a complicated $300 pair and a prescription pair.

JA, I maybe need to re-state. Decades ago, when I first started wearing contact lenses, I DID go for monovision, and that worked out just fine for me. And, if it wouldn't have worked, I'd have just changed my prescription and went on about life.

However, when it came to cataract surgery, I felt (as did my surgeon) a bit more comfortable NOT going that route, since changing cataract lenses is a much more complicated procedure. It also has to do with some lifestyle issues, not the least of which is that I'm constantly performing.

So he dialed me in for optimal depth perception, I guess a sort of monovision, but on a much smaller scale. My absolute sharpest vision is about four feet. That way, I can use my iPad and play guitar without glasses. Still, he got me from 20/700 (estimate) with a LOT of astigmatism to 20/25 and NO astigmatism. He achieved the no astigmatism with the Toric lenses, which cost me about $1200 each above my insurance costs. Well worth it!

So I can drive without glasses if I want to. I can actually do pretty much anything without glasses, but it's fun as hell to be able to watch live music performances and almost be able to see the windings on the guitar strings from the tenth row \:D

Sure, JA, not a problem… and that's just my experience, y'know. Are you looking at the same thing down the road sometime?
