First thing is that you need to discover the full 4-digit version of your own machine.
Power on with the power switch (not from standby), while holding down the track and status buttons for channel 1. As the machine's display begins to power on you can let go of the buttons - eventually you will see on info screen that shows all 3 decimal places. If you have something less than 1.504, then it can't hurt to update - at the very least, download the update type that will work with your computer and save it for later. Roland doesn't support these recorders any longer, so....
