I would like to know if anyone uses the vs2000 as a recorder/interface and then a transfer of files to the sonar DAW for further possibilities. Or any other computer based DAW. I've just invested too much money in all the plugins for the 2000 that i thought it would save me from buying a whole new interface. I realize the transferring of files is a hassle, but is it worth it?

Hi,

I still only record / mix in the VS2000 - I have sonar LE but don't really use it.

I did mess with the MIDI tracks etc but I find it too tiresome to work out how to do stuff, its so much easier to do it all in VS2000.

At most I will make the VS2000 the midi master as record a backing track into it from the stereo o/p of the sequencer or key board ... very low tech ...

So I'm not much help really ...

Is it worth it?...I guess it depends on how far you want to go with the endless possibilities of a computer DAW, and they are indeed pretty well endless both in breadth and depth.
I bought my VS2000 back in about 2005. At that time I had never had a computer and knew nothing about computer DAWs. The idea of a self contained multi-tracker appealed to me. I thoroughly mastered it, recorded a lot of things, mainly duos (guitar with various singers) and some small band stuff.
Bought my first household computer along the way and couldn't resist gradually getting into the computer DAW world (Reaper).
At present have a nice powerful recording computer but still just a four input (six with digital) interface.
Hanging on to the VS for two reasons 1/ Has 8 XLR inputs 2/ I love the damn thing..it was a big part of my life for a good 5 years.
But yes, there is so much more you can do with Reaper...in fact just recently I've been transferring all my old VS project audio into Reaper and doing things like micro editing a guitar solo. It is of course possible in the VS to micro edit automix with all sorts of targets apart from just level (EQ sends etc), but the whole process is tediously clunky and time consuming...in Reaper you can quickly isolate say just one note and apply an EQ to just it.
Then of course there's the integrated midi stuff, and the whole world of FX, VST synths and samplers, much of it free.
If I just want a quick demo of a small band (say guitar, bass, vocals, sax and percussion) I'll still fire up the VS, but if I want to have a lot of fun sculpturing the sounds in minute detail I'll be in Reaper.
And transferring files from VS to computer is not much of a hassle once you've set it up.
Sad though, the way hardware gets superseded (but my old Tube Screamers from the early 80's still rule).

I expect if you do require even a moderate amount of midi stuff and micro editing etc then a DAW would be preferable.

For me, I'd rather just do the solo - fill - vox again and get it right.

But I only record for pleasure and not as a job, if I was making money then I expect a DAW would be essential.

Paul, the VS200CD is a wonderful interface to use for recording!!
Recording 8 inputs at once(24bit/44.1) "ZERO latency",no buffer issues to resolve, input mixer, routing screen, mastering suite, drum machine,USB etc, etc. Not many recording interfaces are this versatile and have zero latency when recording with FXs .
I use my VS2000CD as a recording interface, then use USB to send all the wave files(wave converter) to my computer and into Sonar Platinum where I edit, mix and master(Sonar is fantastic).
I have a few high end external preamps that I use to optimize the signal going into the VS. I use Sonar as my DAW and Steven Slates Everything Bundle plugins that are really nice and have made my mixes much better(IMHO). I have thought about buying an Apollo interface for my PC but why?Anyway, keep your VS2 and get a DAW that you like, couldn't be easier. I also have a Focusrite Scarlet interface that i like that came with a ASIO driver to use with Sonar.Use this as a headphone / monitor out and occasionally record directly into Sonar. So to sum it up,good external preamps to vs2 inputs then into Sonar.
