Just glued the first three boxes of the subject-line together and things didn't fly as smooth as expected.
As far as it now seems, it turned out this nice little parameter RBUSMute kept spoiling the fun. Disabling it made things work. Anybody came across this before ?
I'm also interested in how other people have glued these boxes together. Can post more details myself as well.

PS, the RPC-1 manual gave the hint:
VSR-880 settings
• Master Clock: R-BUS
• System PRM → RBUSMute: Disable*
• Execute Shutdown([SHIFT]+[SHUT/EJECT/(STOP)])
whenever you change RBUSMute.
* RBUSMute is a parameter that was newly added in version
1.03 in order to support the RPC-1. If you are connecting an
earlier R-BUS device, set RBUSMute=Enable.
