Hi All I just bought a Tascam cd rw 700 off fleabay to use with my vs890 and was wondering if anyone had any tips or pointers to help me get up and burning. Can I actually burn on the fly with this recorder? like could I hook a mixer to it and take a line out like a tape deck ? I know its only 2 tracks but just kinda wondering about the potential of this burner
Thanks in advance

Looks like the Tascam cd rw 700 is a recorder, not simply a burner, so yes - you can record directly to it (as someone might do to create a master 2-track). I don't know if it records directly to the CD (my HHB used to, but was a bit glitchy at times), but unless you're in a big rush, if it has the capability it might be worth the time to record to it and then let it complete the burn from internal memory - like I said, I don't know this unit, so check the manual (download from Tascam).

Think of it like you might think of a 2-track cassette, or reel machine..... it's almost the same thing.

You won't be able to use it to burn VS CD burns, like you would with one of the Roland burners - for one thing, it's not a scsi device. You also can't burn VS backups, like the certain scsi burners can do.

It's strictly realtime recording - analog or digital inputs, up to 2 tracks at once (stereo, basically).

Hope it's in good condition and doesn't need re-aligning - Tascam makes a pretty decent product, but it could need alignment - depends... You should be able to tell if you burn a bunch of coasters right out of the box.

Thanks for your response very helpful, I do have a Roland burner as well but it seems to be on forever loan to a pal of mine.
Mostly just want to be able to mix live off the vs to the burner I think this should work
Thanks again for your help

I have two CD recorders and one has a 20Gb hard drive. I have two uses for them which don't involve recording to CD:

1) I am convinced (without any evidence) that the a/d converters in my Yamaha 1000 are the best converters I have. CDs are 16 bit but that only applies to the recording.

2) Both of my CD recorders have coaxial and optical digital i/o as well as analog i/o plus headphones. This is standard on CD recorders.

DON'T ever try to use the cd to do DAT backups on an Audio CD-Recorder! I don't even know whether this is possible on the 890, but I've spent AGES trying it on my Recorder and it seems it only works with ...umm... DAT (maybe it has some hardcoded 48k references in it?)

Get your writer back, they are getting harder and harder to buy!

I think the best use of the VS recorders is to utilize every aspect of them except the recorder. I try to record directly to a modern wav recorder either through or as well as recording to the VS recorder.

I have a Behrenger tube preamp with phantom power to a Roland VS-890 to a Zoom R8.

ya I guess that could be useful, I just find I really like these vs machines for what they are. I have lots of ram on my computer lots of great software but I really like these machines. I bought a 2488 neo a while ago and even thought it has usb 2 ect I don't like it as much as the vs for some reason lol. Cant afford 2 inch tape

Cool--I have the exact same setup except I use the Artpro MPA II as my tube preamp. Works great for recording to my VSR880 and then mixing to my R8 as a wav file.
