My buddy is trying to get an 840 off ebay, and i have a gx. If he gets an ex, for example, are we going to have compatiblilty problems? Any thoughts or other considerations, are greatly appreciated.

The GX broke compatabilty by adding another bank of V-tracks. It is capable of converting an EX disk, but the EX cannot do the reverse.

However, your friend can change an EX to GX by applying an operating system update should he be unable to locate a GX machine.

Yes, you will have compatibility problems.

A disk you create in your GX can not be read in your buddies EX. If he gives you a disk he's made in his EX, you can put it in your GX and convert it to GX. But once you have done so, he will not be able to read it (you have 16 v-tracks per track, he has 8 in an EX or plain 840).

Does your GX have a menu item for converting back to EX?

As far as I know, the conversion is one-way.

I'm beginning to think that every VS-840 user ought to keep a number of flash disks around - so they can go back and forth from EX to GX as needed. But - with the tendency of them to blow up once in awhile during flash update, I'm inclined not to mess with it if it's working.

The answer is yes, their are differences. Hey Jim, one other option he has, is to downgrade his GX to an EX correct? I have heard alot of people do that to do the Hard drive upgrade correct?

well i checked the utilities and it has both import (840 to gx) and export (gx to 840)
but now i see your point with the problem, since my unit has no scsi and it will take Forever to convert files.
my buddy will definately have to find a gx
