Using all 18 tracks creating lag

Is the only option to initialize? I'm mixing a track off an Orb disk and I cant adjust levels and panning because the system gets funky. Adjusting levels takes a few seconds to apply itself and muting a part or going to the track edit screen creates chaos on the screen. There are a few tracks with reverb also.

Re: Using all 18 tracks creating lag

Don't initialize unless you have everything on that drive backed up (and verified to reload). Initialize wipes the entire drive, too, so don't make the mistake of thinking you can initialize just one partition.

Sometimes Song Optimize can help, if there's lots of data you erased, cut, or recorded over without using the UNDO function. But you also lose old track data that you might find useful until the Song is finished - I have found it useful enough to generally keep all my old track data whenever possible.

Using an external drive, such as the orb disk, can be slower than the internal drive. If you have one installed and can free up enough space on it, you might try copying the current Song you're working on onto the internal drive and working from that copy.

Copying the song to another drive or partition can also help speed things up, at least for a time, since copying things creates files that are more contiguous on the physical hard drive space. That's one of the reasons it would have been nice for Roland to have created a defrag operation for the VS recorder.

One final thing you might try would be to bounce some of the tracks to fewer overall tracks (saving the originals on empty virtual tracks). Problem being that although you free up active channels, you also end up having to commit to pre-mixes that may have to be redone later, if they don't blend well in the master mix.

Oh - and watch out for any extra noise generating from the orb drive. Anything that sounds like signs of wear probably IS signs of wear and signals the need to find a new drive soon.

Thanks. I'm going to copy the song to the vs and see if it helps.

This is what seems to be the problem. Thanks.
