No audio on meters or in outputs

Hi folks,

It's been quite a while since I was on here and I hope you are all well. I recently revived my VS-2480 CD. It had been in storage since the fader board failed.

I have several projects on different partitions of the original 80GB hard drive which I would like to access and backup and bring to a PC for remixing. The problem is that there is no levels info displaying in the output meters when I play a project, or audio coming through the outputs. If I zoom into any track to waveform view, I can see that there is audio data there.

At one point I noticed that the CR2032 battery had worn out and I manually adjusted the date and time in the settings and suddenly the audio was all there and playing and I was delighted. The next time I went to use the machine, no audio. I changed out the CR2032 battery and rebooted and still nothing. Maybe coincidental.

It is also worth mentioning that the CD drive is not reading anything either, and I never got around to upgrading it to the DVD version. I do not have any other way of lifting project data off that main hard drive.

I am left wondering if the HD is failing, or if sectors of it have.
But if that were the case the VS 2480 shouldn't be able to load any project....

Has anyone had similar trouble and if so, how did you resolve it??

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

Sounds more like a motherboard failure, but that's a guess.
Can you find someone with a working 2480? You could swap the hard drive and do a track export to get the wav files from your projects.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

Thanks for your reply.
From what I have read in another post here is that it may be related to the fact that I had the machine in storage for a few years and there is a known issue with some of the capacitors on the main board. By firing up the unit after a long absence it was the death knell for those capacitors.

I have a couple of options:

(A)Identify and replace all the capacitors
(B) upgrade the now broken internal CD-RW to a DVD-RW and grab the data I need.
(C) I also need a new fader board. Or is there a way to replace the faders individually? All of them.

Can someone advise me on which DVD-RW unit to buy and where to source it?

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

I read somewhere on this forum that this model works :
Matshita UJ-870 ( Set to "Master" , Donīt know how to know that though .... )

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Matshita-Panaso...5kAAOSw~1pgTnZe

Please chime in and correct me

Edit : Also OS 2.504 is required .....

Cheers !

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

Thanks Catweazle

I'll give that a go and see if it works.
Just have to wait for the delivery.
If anyone knows of a link to a video or description for the DVD installation process, please share.

Similarly, if anyone knows about fader-board replacement, please chime in too.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

I would be interested in the answer to question C also. On my 2480 Fader 1 and 2 are running but you can hear the motor struggling and they bouncing about a db up and down. If my headphone issue is solved, (another thread) I was probably going to keep my 2480 and maybe use the motors on my 2400. But, I though you just replaced them individually.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

There is another topic on the fader replacement on this board and it is very encouraging. I have posed a question there to see if the process is viable for the 2480, as the OP modified a 2400, which has a different form factor. Fingers crossed. he was able to add 100mm faders to his VS-2400 (2 of them in fact paired together) which is very cool but also quite invasive and time consuming, not to mention a very technical and skilled process.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

UPDATE:

I tried reloading a particular project, having let the VS-2480 run for a couple of hours first to warm up. After two attempts, audio was restored. I got to listen to about 45 minutes of audio - this particular project did not involve virtual tracks, it was a live recording, paused and released in sections over about 1.5 hours.

After a while audio disappeared again, possibly because I was using the rotary jog-wheel to skip forward to another section. I ended up having to reload the project and it eventually came back after two attempts. I suspect that there is a limit to how many times I can get away with this method, so I have ordered a DVD-RW to replace the in-built CD-RW which no longer functions. My plan is to grab all the tracks individually to import them into my PC for further processing.

Fingers crossed the DVD-RW will work.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

The replacement optical drive arrived from Italy today.
I have just installed it and gave the machine a good vacuum cleaning while I had it open.

The DVD drive arrived without a faceplate, and the existing CD drive's faceplate did not match up unfortunately.

I wanted to grab some tracks from a particular project and burn then to a DVD-R disc, but the VS-2480 spat that disc out saying "Insert CD-R disc".

I did that, except I used a CD-RW that had been finalised, so it proceeded to erase that and copy a track I needed on to the CD. I am presuming that it did not like the DVD-R because it was an X16 speed disc? Anyone know anything about this - should I be using X8 speed or less when burning DVDs?

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

Sorry I didn't take the time to re-read your whole thread - but I just had time to pop in with a possible -
Is your VS using the latest os version (Of course, that means the last one they released). If not, could it be that your machine isn't prepared to accept a dvd drive?

I hope this helps some.

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

It is running 2.5.0.5 - I think. I know i flashed it with the latest and greatest back in the day.

It sees the drive and recognises that it is a DVD RW drive.
Maybe the particular DVD disc was bad. I will buy some DVD-Rs tomorrow and see. Just wondering about max write speed in the firmware before I buy the discs?

Re: No audio on meters or in outputs

Press and hold channel 1 Status & Track buttons when starting up
to de OS version and a few other things in LCD screen.
Press "Enter" to continue start up .
As I mentioned before , OS 2.504 is enough for DVD operation .

DVD speed does not matter, but some DVD brand can be an issue ....
Roland VSīs is a little picky sometimes

Cheers !
