Looking for new headphones.

Right now I own a set of Sennheiser HD 535's

They are so beat up they won't stay on my head anymore so I'm looking for something as good or better to buy.

I already checked for spare parts on the old one but they don't sell the parts I really need like the headband.

Me too--recommendations, people? My budget is about $200. They have to be lightweight and comfortable.

Those look interesting Doughy but I need to spend less than you could get. By the time I get them down here I've already added 17% import tax plus extra freight and handling.

Re: Looking for new headphones.

Steve, if you like the 535s, why not buy another set?

Jazzooo, check out the Grado SR80e ($99) or SR60e ($79).
Very comfy and perform way above the price point.
Grado SR60 vs SR80

I like Ultrasones myself and have four pair: 2 Ultrasone Pro-650 S-Logic for recording, etc., one HFI-550 for fun listening, one set of Ultrasone iCans I got for my daughter.

The 650s are no longer made but there are the Ultrasone Pro-750, though I've never used them.
Ultrasone-Pro-750 Review (they are more affordable now).
Ultrasone closed headphone reviews: various models.

The Ultrasones are built like tanks, which is good and bad.
The 650 Pro are thick and heavy but I got used to them.....but other than the pads, they are almost like the day I bought them.

The 750 Pro look to be more comfortable, but I'm not sure.

All of my sets needed break in - I played music through them overnight for about a week.

There's always the Sony MDR-7506 for $99

And in a $200 price range someone could get the Grado SR80e and the Sony MDR-7506.
I like having more than one set of cans for critical listening (I use the 650 and the 7506 because I know them so well).

Good luck on your searches.

Steve, if you want higher end, check out the Grado SR125e, SR225e, SR325e....depending on your budget.

Regarding Sony 7506 or Audio Technica ATH M50x vs the Grado SR80e, here's a "showdown": https://lifehacker.com/headphone-showdown-grado-sr80e-vs-audio-technica-ath-m-1744161005

A little expensive, but they are awesome. Comfortable, open-air design you can wear for hours.

They look amazingly comfortable and the open mesh must be good for airflow and lack of sweatiness during long periods.
Of course that's nothing without sounding good and they get great reviews.
I've never heard them but I am going to try!

I use
Sennheiser

HD 230 (closed)
HD 280 (closed)

Beyerdynamic
DT 911 (open)
DT 901 (closed)
DT 811 (open)
DT 801 (closed)

Love them all but parts are hard to find.

Also a vintage pair of Stax need going through

I got mine maybe 8 years ago, on Arthur's recommendation. I paid about $400 for them, and have never regretted it. I had to replace the cable once after rolling my chair over it.

I LOVE these headphones. The big ear-cups completely surround your ears, so they don't press them against the side of your head. You really can wear them for hours without getting sweaty or sore. And the sound is f'n pristine. They're relatively high impedance, so you'll need to crank your headphone amp if you want them real loud.

Re: Looking for new headphones.

I remember when I first got them, the newer HD-650 had just come out. They look almost identical, with the 650 having somewhat better specs.
I seem to remember talk at the time that the HD-600 would be discontinued, but that doesn't seem to have happened.

I think Arthur had told me he had tried both, but still preferred the older 600 model. Maybe others did too, and that might explain why they're still in production despite the 650 having somewhat better specs.

Re: Looking for new headphones.

They have to pry my 600s out of my cold dead hands... the 600 is really flat in playback, while the 650 has a bit of a bass boost I don’t like. I want them as flat sounding as my studio monitors.

Re: Looking for new headphones.

I have 8 headphones -- all a closed cans for tracking = least amount of bleed .. From Beyer /Sony /AT/ Koss/ etc. / UltraSone 780 seem to be what I grab @ the desk OR the ATH 40X are the best budget ones..

I don't listen to cans == unless I am tracking ...

Re: Looking for new headphones.

I used to mix 90% on phones, using my Genelec monitors more for sanity checking. I just hear better detail, and can feel the music better with good cans. I don't think my mixes suffered for that habit, either--it's all about knowing how to interpret what you're hearing and figuring out how it will translate to the outside world.

Having said that.... I do a lot of tracking with the Sony MDR 7506 which Sony clearly identifies as monitoring headphones. I'm wondering what a good set of mixing headphones might be

Re: Looking for new headphones.

I mix on Apple speakers through lots of the process --- Then main monitors with sub for finals ..

Always hard for me to "discern" with headphones for mixing ....except for the obvious minuet details of a mix or track you need to isolate.

The Sennheiser 500/600 series or Ultrasone -- can't go wrong ;\) THese are the only headphones I have used for mixing ....

Re: Looking for new headphones.

Yeah - to be clear... I normally mix through NFM's. But our guest bedroom is next to my office and throughout the year we'll have the kids, or the MIL, or someone else staying in there and sometimes I want to get shit done without bugging anyone - so that's the reason for my interest in occasionally using phones to mix.... so I'm not necessarily stuck until the guest leaves.

I found a fix online for the analog lag with phones on the iPad so any of you pad owners with this problem?

Just unplug the phones and plug em back in again and lag is gone.
