Hello all! I was able to upload complete VS-880EX songs via backup CD-R's to my new VS-1824CD. However, the songs are in PROTECT mode. Is there anyway to un-protect them? Thanks! Art of Art Gone Wrong

The next step is to Import them. There should be a function just for that step (I'm on a 1680, so I'm not sure of exactly where it is on your system).
Import a song, which will make a copy in the 1824 format, then you can delete the original locked version (after assuring the VS that you REALLY want to delete the song, of course).
If you're really tight on hard drive space, you may need to do this two step operation with fewer songs loaded onto the drive first. I don't recall if you can perform the import across partitions, but you might be able to shuffle things around by copying some stuff off one partition and onto another that has free space first if the import has to be done in the same partition. The reason for this is because the import will create a new copy of the protected song file, which means double the used space until you can delete the protected 880 songs.
Hope this helps.
Look in the Song menu where you'd find Song Copy Playable..... I think that's where import is hiding.

No. That didn't work. Keep getting the same message: Can not edit! Current Song is Protected!

What didn't work?
Spell out what the steps are that you say are not working, please.

Yes, as Martin pointed out (and maybe I was not specific enough), use the IMPORT function (SHIFT+SONG-[PAGE 2]select-song-import)..... Song IMPORT is an entirely separate function from uploading the song from a CD-R (as you first described). It is needed in order to create a version of the song that can be edited by the 1824.
Is this what you have tried and are claiming does not work?
If it isn't working as it should, then maybe there is something wrong that could include either:
1- the song data on the CD-R, 2- the upload might be corrupted, 3- there's some problem with your hard drive that can be repaired with drive check, 4- the partition is nearly full, 5- the place where you are attempting to import the song to or from is invalid... (not sure if you can perform the song import to or from and external hard drive, for instance).
There may be other reasons for this, but as you can see, I could go on guessing as to what and why it's not working for you, artgonewrong, but it will help matters a great deal for you to spell out in detail what you have tried to do and where in the process you are failing to get the import done.

i think also (not full shure,as i go from memory).. that you need to load another song other than the (VS-880EX)song,that you want import.

If I read what you are saying correctly, I don't think it's necessary to load a different song from the one you want to import, Martin.

I did not use my VS-1824CD for a while, thats why I started to re-read the manuals. I put temporarily the roland demo "Seems so right" on harddrive partion 2, so I do not accidentally destroy my own recordings while learning.
The demo roland "Seems so right" is a VS-1680 song and is protected after it is placed on the hard disk. That is not what I want because I like to edit it on the VS-1824CD.
Here is how i did it:
Select the internal drive as the current drive. 1. Press [Play (Display)]. 2. Hold [Shift] and press [F6 (Utility)]. 3. Press [F4 (DrSel)]. 4. select with cursor IDE 2 5. [F4 (Exec)] 6. [F6 (EXIT)]
Loading a Song from External Disks using Song Archive Extract 7. Insert the roland demo data cd 8. press [CD-RW/MASTERING] for CD-RW/Mastering Menu 9. press [F5 (CDRRc)] for CD-R Recover 10. select "seems so right" and press [F4 (MARK)]. 11. Press [F5 (Exec)]. 12. Press [ENTER/YES].
Song Import 13. Press [PLAY (DISPLAY)]. 14. Hold [SHIFT] and press [F1 (SONG)]. 15. Press [F4 (Imprt)]. 16. select "seems so right" and press [F4 (MARK)]. 17. Press [F5 (Exec)]. 18. Press [ENTER/YES]. 19. Press [ENTER/YES].
Song Erase of VS-1680 version 20. Press [Play (Display)]. 21. Hold [SHIFT] and press [F1 (SONG)]. 22. Press [F6 (Erase)]. 23. select the protected VS-1680 version of "seems so right" and press [F3 (MARK)]. 24. Press [F5 (Exec)]. 25. Press [ENTER/YES]. 26. Press [ENTER/YES].
That's all!
