The 27 club has a new member. How long was she circling the drain?? What a waste.

Very sad. She was a great talent, but we can't say we didn't see this coming.
Wasn't it just a few weeks ago there was a youtube video of her on stage stumbling, slurring, throwing her mic, band members propping her up, fans booing her off the stage?

Please don't lump her into the 27 club.. Sure she had a great voice and a decent writing style, but she had 2 albums.. One was decent (Frank) and one was pretty damn good (Back to Black), but the Dap Kings backed her up on that one so of course it was gonna be good.

She wasted her talent and should not be considered as one of the "Greats"..

Thats just my opinion.

I don't really have a lot of sympathy for her. Her life was in her own hands, and she choose to waste it with drugs and booze.

having been through drug addiction i can tell you it can be really hard to get out of.
it's easy to get into a downward spiral which can be hard to escape.

quite a few people i knew are either dead or committed.

Funny....but I was surprised. I'm not sure why.....just because of the sadness I guess. I feel sorry for some of these rich ass stupid fucking people. No real childhoods.....just lots of money and drugs and people posing as your friends.

Great point Vince. We tend to blame people for their addictions as if they can just stop at will. The combination of Life and brain chemistry is hard enough to deal with in sobriety. I thank God that none of my kids (17 to 23) have struggled with drugs. And I'm proud of you and at least one other friend here who have decided to reclaim your lives.

Doughboy, I was surprised too. Quite often the
press makes these things bigger then they are.
PS: I thought her dad was a cab driver, and her mom worked at a pharmacy
(maybe that's were she started using drugs - while waiting for her mom to come home after work)

It may feel weird to be on top of the world at 20, often alone and living in hotels.
Common life seems quite difficult already for most ..
Too bad. She was too young to go, whatever anyone says.

She was intrigueing for sure, in her music and her particular special way of bringing it.
Her managemant confirmed it this time, while Keith Richards
who had it comming for a decade, is still alive ..
RIP Amy ..

I know literally hundreds of people, from slightly to fairly well to some of my closest friends, who have licked heroin and cocaine and alcohol addictions. It isn't that I don't believe in the chemical basis for these, but I also know it *can* be overcome. Always a shame when someone succumbs.

tnx m8!

i still tend to indulge in weed a little too much.
but i'm working on it and haven't done any hard drugs in at least 15 years.
it's a never ending phuckin battle.

i'm rollerblading between 5 and 8 km every day.

This is always a sad thing to me. Even without knowing much about her, she did manage to break into the biz creating quite a stir. Not an easy thing to get thru the ranks that far only to have it all end in tragedy. It's too bad that for some who are lucky enough or talented enough to get a shot at the big time... can't live long enough to really enjoy the ride.

I don't blame her, but I don't have much sympathy for her either. My sympathy is reserved for people who are innocent victims of bad luck or illness or accidents. Yes, it is tough to break an addiction, but she chose to become addicted in the first place. Its not like its a secret that heroin and booze are addictive.
Reminds me of the joke about the teenager who killed his parents and then asked the court for mercy because he was an orphan.

I've thought about that too. In my 20's am sure I might have blown thru a lot money anyway. Probably wouldn't have wasted too much time messing with drugs though. Then again, that can easily be a trap for some if you're around the wrong people all the time continually shoveling the shit in your face. It's tough enough to even get one shot at success let alone repeat that success. You could easily blow thru a lot of dough not realizing it ain't gonna last in most cases...when you should have been stashing it away.

I wonder how much of 'getting started' with drugs has to do with who you run with? My buds drank and smoked - so did I.

I think even in the initial, beginning stages of any musician's career, having just a love for playing music and putting yourself out there....the trappings that come with that can wreak havoc on a lot of intentions that easily become dashed. You can experience that and also witness that at a lot of levels.
It's frustrating to see your friends, a whole band even, disinagrate on the eve of great things just because they can't rise above certain addictions.

And all that comes in between.
Takes its toll.

English radio interviewed a friend who said the Lable Companies should change their policies in the contracts. Presently, too intense a schedule for most artists with no time to rest. Time is money and the artists are pushed to the legal limits to perform. There was a fascination with her depravity; riding the edge. Sad for her own feelings/mental state. RIP Lady Girl

I wasn't a fan, but I did hear a couple of clips of her singing on NPR today. Good voice, nothing amazing, but still sad that anybody would die so young.

However, having said that…

It strikes me as a bit trite that she would join the 27 Club. Y'know what I mean? It's like, "Oh, I'm a famous musician that has substance abuse problems, so I need to check out when I'm 27."

Dunno, just an observation. No flames from AW fans… just sayin'.
