I was wondering if you can slave a VS2400 to another roland DAW (ie. VS2480, VS2400) in order to get 16 channels of input. Thanks

You can synchronise two VS recorders together using MTC and MMC over a standard MIDI cable. All this will do is lock their transports and playback positions together; what audio gets recorded on one unit isn't accessible on the other though.

Typically you'd run the stereo buss out from the 'slave' recorder into a pair of inputs on the 'master' recorder to combine the slave's audio tracks with the master's on mix down.

It would be technically possible to route the audio inputs on one VS24x0 through the RBUS output and into the RBUS input on a second VS, using the first VS basically as a 8 channel mic pre and AD converter.

Of course, that's a bit like buying a whole car when you just want something comfy to sit on!

Sounds like what you really want is an SI-24, ADA-7000 or a DIF-AT24 with a multi preamp unit to 'expose' those extra 8 digital inputs for recording. I use a DIF-AT24 with a Presonus Digimax FS with my own VS2400 - works great.

Cheers, Ben.

Classifieds section here... maybe put in a WTB (Wanting To Buy). The SI-24s tend to come up every so often - I'm sure there are people with them ready to sell.

DIF-AT24s were common a few years ago (when I got mine) but have since gone the way of the Dodo, it seems. I'd highly recommend getting one if and when the opportunity arrises.

Would have been nice if Roland had given up on the RBUS format when it was clear ADAT had won. Or at least chose to fit the VSs with expansion slots and given us a choice.

Cheers, Ben.

an option you didn't mention is the "VM-3100 PRO" to get
8 additional inputs via R-Bus.
Got one last year for about 200,-EU.
Prices were similar for DIF-AT24, but these don't have
converters.

For ADA-7000 you pay the same as for a VS-2400. Or
let's say, a momentary seller wants 700,-EU, unlikely that
he'll find anyone who will pay this.
Between the ADA-7000 and a VS-2400, I'd prefer the
VS - the 2nd car ;\)

Good luck

Horst

Ah yes, the VM mixers... good call!

Only issue with the VM3100Pro is the measly two mic pres, though if you can get one cheap enough it will definitely do the trick for many users.

Just make sure you get the Pro - the standard 3100 has no RBUS!

Also, note that if using something like the VM3100Pro, you can make or buy xlr to trs adapters and/or cables and add on external phantom power supplies if more mic channels are needed for condenser mics.... extra cost, but doable.

If you're patient, you will be rewarded. I waited three months for an SI-24 to come up on ebay. Suddenly, there were five or so for sale within a few weeks. I got mine for about $225. It works perfectly with the VS-2400 and an R-Bus cable (make sure the cable comes with the SI-24).

In addition to the additional inputs, you'll have 24 "flying-faders" available at once for mixing.

Good luck!

Blizmo, are you able to get audio out of the SI-24's analog outputs (via the R-bus)? I have an issue with mine that I will post on the 2400 forum. Thanks.
