Hi all,

Well, sadly the time has come to part with my beloved VS2400. Not something I really ever wanted to do - and certainly didn't plan on doing - but the current situation with work and finances make it difficult to hang onto much of my studio setup, especially as my current motivation to record is pretty minimal and work in the upcoming months (and probably years) won't allow much time to either. A rather depressing situation that I'll quit boring you with, and get onto the good stuff.

Up for sale is the following.

Roland VS2400CD digital multitrack recorder/workstation
Roland DIFAT24 RBUS-ADAT converter
2x Roland VS8F-3 plugin effects boards
Full VS plugin library (save TRacksVS).
Logitech keyboard and wireless mouse
Full paper manuals incl. service manual and original packaging
Roland VS2400CD DVD manual
Roland VS Recorder Power! guide book
110~220V step down transformer
'DIY' rack ears

Roland VS2400CD Digital Multitrack Recorder

If you're here I'm sure you know what it can do, so I won't bore you with specs.

I've been its owner for the past 5 years and it has been babied and loved during that time. In excellent, unmolested condition. All faders are working as they should - the unit was covered religiously when not in use. CD-R burns reliably. Original 40Gb hard drive still going strong. All buttons and controls undamaged and transport controls still have sharp graphics on them eg. no label wear. Screen is clear (one photo shows a couple of marks I failed to clean off - doh!) and backlight is strong. Unit has few noticeable blemishes or wear. About the only real damage of note is that Input 4's gain/sensitivity knob's 'outer ring' split at one stage (came to me this way) and is missing its top indicator plastic 'nub'. I reglued the collar and stupidly forgot to order a replacement last time I was on the phone with Roland Support. You could get a replacement for a few bucks of Roland, but obviously the minor plastic issue in no way affects the unit's actual performance.

As some who have seen my past threads would know, my VS has lived most of its life with me in a rackmount trolley, which has protected it from the usual bumps and scrapes you'd typically get from moving it around, etc. I've put the original sides back on for the sale, however the rack ears will be included if you want them. They're only home made bits of steel bracket, but they do the trick, and were a lot cheaper than $70 for the Roland ones....

This is a US-sourced VS2400CD and is labelled with a 117V/60Hz power supply. Despite evidence that all VS24x0s had 110-240V switching power supplies, I was never game enough to try plugging mine into Australia's 240V mains supply, and have used a step-down transformer. This 200VA transformer (worth about AU$70) will be included with the sale unless the buyer specifically doesn't want it (it will add a kilo or two to the postage).

Unit will be wiped and the original demo tunes reinstalled prior to shipping. It is updated to OS 1.50.

Basically, this is an extremely clean example of a great digital recorder.

Roland DIF-AT24 RBUS-to-ADAT 24 bit

This is the ADAT-RBUS adapter that you want. Unlike the other units (which included TDIF conversion) this unit works at full 24 bit resolution, up to 48KHz (limit of ADAT format). Why's it good? Because it is what gives you access to the 8 tracks of simultaneous recording on the VS2400CD! With this and a suitable 8ch mic preamp and AD (such as the Presonus Digimax FS) you can record a full 16 tracks of audio at once. I've done this many a time and it works fantastically well... arguably one of the reasons why the old VS24x0s can still hold their own over newer computer DAWs. I've recorded live gigs and long rehearsals and the VS just doesn't miss a beat. Good luck finding a computer DAW that stable....

These units (like a lot of Roland VS stuff) are getting rather difficult to find and are worth a good few hundred bucks or more on their own. Also included is a proper, Roland-branded RBUS cable, 3 metres long.

2x Roland VS8F-3 Plugin Effects Boards

Installed in the VS2400CD are two (2) VS8F-3 effects boards. Again, if you're here I'm sure you have some inkling of how tricky these buggers are starting to get hold off, and just how much they're worth now (apparently there's one on eBay for over $500 at the moment!).

ALL THE ROLAND VS-PLUGINS EVER MADE AVAILABLE!!! (with the exception of TRacksVS)

Yeah... it would have been nice to get the 'full house', but truth be told I was never a fan of TRacks in VST format.... anyhoo...

Okay, so that's

- Roland's 5 included VS8F-3 effects library (Mastering Toolkit, Stereo Reverb, Tempo Mapping (delay), Pre-Amp Modelling, Vocal Channel Strip).

- Universal Audio 1176LN and LA2A

- TC Electronics TC3000 Reverb

- Massenburg DesignWorks Hi-res EQ

- McDSP Chrometone Amp

- SoundToys SoundBlenderVS

- Antares Autotune (makes you sound just like Ke$ha! heheh)

Like pretty much everything else in the Roland VS ecosystem, these plugins are getting mighty hard to find now, especially as when used they're keyed to an effects board. All of mine are keyed to to the one board. Value? Probably more than the VS2400CD itself. No, not joking.

All titles are complete with inserts, etc. Discs are free from scratches (only used once each). Also included are a set of backup discs for each title; as VS Plugin discs are CD-R discs - not pressed CDs - it is generally accepted that they will not last forever and thus backups should be made every few years to protect your investment.

Also included...

All manuals and printed paraphernalia

Including the VS2400CD Service Manual (worth $25 on its own... well that's what Roland charged me for it, so I'm guessing that's what it is worth!).

Roland VS2400CD Video Manual DVD

Roland VS Power! Guide Book

Roland-included corded PS/2 mouse PLUS Logitech Cordless Mouse and Logitech keyboard

The cordless mouse is a Logitech MX900, which is the last of the Logitech's that used its own power supply for the receiver (versus USB power) and thus is about as good a cordless mouse as you'll find to work with the VS's PS/2 mouse connection. The keyboard is Logitech's Ultra-flat keyboard, which is a very nice, compact keyboard that works correctly with the VS. The keyboard is actually barely a few months' old as I had to replace the original one I had (girlfriend spilt tea while borrowing the old one.... tsk tsk...).

Both keyboard and mouse come with appropriate USB-PS/2 adapters. Being a VS2400CD, there's a VGA port ready and waiting for your monitor too. I haven't included mine as it would cost more to ship it anywhere than it would to just buy a new one. And most people tend to have a spare laying around anyway.

All these goodies will be shipped in the VS's original box and packaging (necessary to ensure safe delivery... it's worked for one pan-Pacific trip so far!).

So how much?

AU$1,750 for the lot + shipping.

.... that's about US$1,830... or about £1,120... or a shade under €1.400,00 at the present exchange rate.

I'm open to a little negotiation on price, but please, no lowball offers, thanks. One, because it hurts to have to sell in the first place, and two, the asking price would cover the going rates for both effects boards and all plugins, easy. Without laying it on too much, it is a cracking deal and I'm reasonably confident that this is the most complete VS2400CD package that's been offered in a fair while.

Payment via direct bank transfer if you're in Australia, PayPal if overseas.

Shipping via your choice of carrier, and I'm happy to ship anywhere reputable. I'm yet to weigh the box with everything in it but it would be pushing 16-17kg, and the box is a big one (full, it is hard to carry on your own) so it naturally won't be cheap. Sending it out here (minus most of the goodies) from the USA in 2007 cost about US$150, so for shipping back to the USA or UK/Europe budget on about AU$150-$200 at least, and around AU$50-$70 within Australia. Obviously I'll do what I can to keep the shipping costs reasonable - I may need to split the goods into two boxes. Insurance is highly recommended, of course, and while I'll do what I can (within reason) to limit duties and fees, they will be your own responsibility. If you're serious about buying, get in touch and I'll get you an accurate quote.

If you happen to live in Tasmania you are of course more than welcome to pick up it up yourself and pay in cash.... I'd prefer a swank, shiny attaché case full of non-sequential $20s, but a ratty old envelope with the appropriate legal tender will suffice.... ;-)

My eBay user is headwerkn (http://myworld.ebay.com.au/headwerkn) with 100% feedback and well over 100 transactions since 2002. I've also bought a few times here. In other words, I'm trustworthy.

I think that about it.... oh, one last thing.

Will I sell the goodies separately??...

Short answer - maybe.

I'd much rather sell the unit as a single lot for a fair price, preferably to someone who's going looking to get into the Roland VS world and wants a well-rounded, ready to rock setup. But I'm also well aware the demand - and value - of the various bits separately. So if no-one comes knocking for the full kit in a couple of weeks, I'll consider splitting it up. Just send me a PM in the interim if you're interested in something.

Phew! If you made it to the bottom of all that, well done! Drop me a PM if you're interested.

Cheers, Ben.

Ok, no interest in the lot, so I'm now taking offers on splitting up the goodies.

A used VS8F-3 with 6 plugins (has TRacksVS instead of UA LA2A) just went for nearly AU$1700 on eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/200748576956?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2750wt_1182) so forgive me as the raging capitalist in me takes over... why no one wanted a bonus VS2400 with their effects card/plugins is beyond me, but anyway....

I'll take AU$1500 here for the key VS8F-3 card and all plugins. You've got about 4 days before it goes on eBay.

The other VS8F-3 card - AU$500.

DIF-AT24 - AU$450

The VS2400CD itself, peripherals and documentations/books... open to offers around the AU$800 mark.

PM if interested...

Cheers, Ben.

They must have been from screen shots of the VS' lcd screen, since I noticed he says this underneath the last PC image: "Antares Auto-tune (sorry, no pic of the VS LCD view - forgot to take a photo!)"

Striking difference between the PC-based GUI and the VS LCD screen, isn't it?! Oh well... the main thing being how well they work.

screen display on the 1880 certainly won't be any BETTER than that of a later model (2xxx series).

They will most likely look like the pics in this thread: http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1120285#Post1120285 , since that is what all VS LCD graphics look like... it's the limitations of the VS to display things, I'm sure, that forces the plug-in's graphics designer to make two versions... one real pretty and colorful, one simple for the VS LCD.

If you mean will they look even cruder than the green shots?... I doubt that, since I think the LCD for the 1880 is essentially the same design carried over to the 2xxx models.

The shots of the plugins were what is displayed on the VS2400's screen. The views for Chrometone, Massy EQ and TC3000 are pretty much the same as their VGA views, just monochrome... with the others there is some difference in order to make everything fit, sometimes splitting up controls over multiple tabs (eg. SoundBlender and Roland's own effects).

From memory Autotune on LCD looked much like its VGA equivalent... I only ever fired it up once to see if it was installed properly. Didn't want to sound like Ke$ha ;-) I don't know why I forgot to photograph it, but by the time I realised I'd packed my lights and gear away and couldn't be arsed bringing it all out again. Those photos actually required a heap of effort to get looking decent.

I've not used a VS1880 et. al. but I recall their LCD screens being the same size/resolution as the VS2xx0 units, so I'd figure they display in the same manner.

VS2400CD still for sale - someone please buy it!
