Hi all,
After many years of buying my own recording gear, too many years, i've decided to look into the cable side of things. Also i can now afford to. I looked around and stumbled upon a new brand to me and only unanimously positive user reviews : Vovox. They arent cheap and are way way more expensive than anything i would have considered before. I used to think the difference could only be extremely slim and barely audible, almost a delusion. Well i downloaded some test files and im now stunned: the difference is like changing from a decent preamp to an excellent one. So im going to get enough cables to have only good ones in a basic recording set-up: 2 XLR, a guitar jack and a couple of line RCA cables i guess.
I can only advise anyone with standard cables to listen to some test files of high-end cables, and Vovox seem to be amongst the absolute best.
If there are any cables experts out there, it's question time: - Is there any difference in sound between optical spdif and coax spdif? - i heard that if your cable is too slow it can mess with the clock (?) - has anyone here got experience with high end cables and if so can you tell us about the changes you noticed? - has anyone tried Vovox?
Thanks!

I suppose Monster cables qualifying as "high end" is debatable...
I bought a couple of guitar cables once upon a time. I could notice a difference, but can't say it was preferable to me... the cables were too bulky and heavy... right-angled plug shorted out very soon after buying.
I also happened upon some 8-channel Monster balanced cable a few years ago, which I am currently using between external preamps and breakout box for studio soundcard. They appear to work fine, but I haven't compared them to cheaper/normal cable for the same need in a side-by-side. They are also quite heavy and I would not use them without strain relief if they needed to hang above the floor of the rack.
I don't recall the model number of either cable at this time.
I'm sure there are many reasons to buy/use really expensive cabling. The only way to tell whether or not it is actually doing anything good for your needs is to try it in a side-by-side test, so if you're hearing a great difference when you finally try your new one out, then you must have made a good decision...
I'd always heard that coax spdif might actually be better than optical spdif..... and in fact, I think it was bear who actually mentioned this in a recent thread as well. I've always used coax with my VS..... probably because I had no optical cables at the time when I needed to hook up..... coax was readily available and cheaper (at least for me, at that time). There's some things I ONLY use optical with, but that's generally either 8-ch ADAT, or because I am otherwise restricted in my I/O choices.
Haven't tried the Vovox, but thanks for the heads-up.

The Vovox cables are marketed as high end durable cables, which I feel is completely accurate. It was a nice tight fit when plugging the cable into the bass cab, which you’re sending a couple hundred watts of thunder to a speaker cab, you want a solid connection.
