Control Surface for Sonar X1/X2 . . . Options??

Hello,
I am an avid user of VS2480HD. Some years ago, Roland FOOLISHLY discontinued it. If they had upgraded it to run on Intel Core 2, they would have been hot sellers . . . IMHO.
Now I'm having to seriously consider moving my studio operation to Sonar X1 (I have a free upgrade to X2 as soon as I buy a new 64bit studio computer).
I am old school. I've been into audio engineering since 1972. I went the VS2480 route because of the User Interface, FADERS & KNOBS ! I can live with using the mouse & keyboard together with faders & knobs. I HAVE TO have some faders and knobs.
I looked into using my VS2480 as a control surface but its got some major issues with computer DAWs . . . even Sonar.
Now I'm looking at options for purchasing a control surface that works well with Sonar X1/X2. The obvious choice is the V-Studio 700C (just the control surface without the I/O unit). The problem is, it costs too much, possible reduced functionality without the I/O unit and everything I read about it refers to Sonar 8 and nothing about X1/X2.
My analog board was a 24 channel Mackie 8 bus. Made a lot of albums with it running a Mackie fader automation with it. I currently have a Mackie Big Knob in the studio. I like Mackie.

FYI (recording/digital transfer chain)
(2) VS240 and (2) DIF-AT24 (24Bit ADAT to R-Bus converter)
Alesis HD24 (used as my 24 channel A/D converter)
M-audio Light Bridge (digital transfer into computer DAW up to 32 mono tracks at once and record up to 24 channels into computer at once)

Hey Ed maybe someone will be able to answer you here but there are not many people on the Plnaet that are using Sonar. I have Sonar 8.5PE and X1 but I have never yet used X1. I am too dumb to even attempt to answer your question. If someone does know the answer here then great but otherwise you should head on over to the Cakewalk formums and post your question on the X1 forum there. You will get an answer there I am sure.

I don't visit VSPlanet much anymore, as I haven't used my Roland VS840 in years...but I have used Cakewalk products since at least v2 of their original product. I haven't taken the jump to Sonar X2, but have been using X1 for awhile, and my control surface of choice has been the Mackie Control Universal (not the 'Pro' version). I chose it especially because of the brand name and reputation. It has alot more capability than I use, as I use it mostly for my rough mixing. I also use its transport control during this mixing process.
It can also be used for cut/paste, control of some plugins, etc....but I don't use it that way. When I'm working with the plugins and making fine tweaks, I prefer to be infront of my computer monitors with a mouse in hand.

Mackie control works well with X1 but if you want to really save some money pick up a peavey studiomix on ebay. The mackie is good but if all you are doing is mixing with it the studiomix is a hell of a lot cheaper

The behringer bcf2000 and bcr2000 are supposedly excellent control surfaces for sonar, but the faders make some noise when they move. I use sonar x2 and looooovvvveee it, but I mix with a mouse and do not use a control surface.

I also made that leap into the abyss a few years ago. From my hybrid 2480/Cakewalk rig to my current full computer setup Sonar 8.5PE with the Mackie Control with the 8ch extender. But lately a strange thing has been happening. I find myself using the Mackie less and less. I used to be an uncompromising advocate for mixing with faders. But I’m finding the mouse and keyboard is becoming my preferred way to work.
That said... The Mackie is an excellent control surface for Sonar. I did try X1 for a while. But I didn't like the UI very much. But we’ll probably end up upgrading to that platform eventually.

With due respect to Gonzo. The Projectmix was designed by M-Audio as a front end for ProTools and while its a decent audio interface and control surface. It only only offers the most basic controls for Sonar/X1. Basically just transport and fader support. I owned one for awhile but I later sold it and got the Mackie. By the way I did like the audio quality of the ProjectMix. But it wasn't as good as their M-Audio 2626 interface.
I know it's sacrilege to say it but I'm not a big fan of ProTools. But I think you actually might be better off with a ProjectMix/ProTools rig than a ProjectMix/X1 setup.

i used it with sonar 6pe, it worked fine there.
i produced an album by a band called "Kettlefish" with this unit.

I'm a bit late to the chat......
The 2480 can handle transport, fader and pan duties.
Assuming you aren't using the Input 1-16/17-24 there's 24 sliders & pans.
Record the slider/knob movements in SONAR's console view, save the project as a template, and you're all setup every new project.

Sonar 3pe? Well, I guess so, but all ive spent time with regarding control surfacing is X1.
Basically its midi out from the 2480, midi into the PC.....so ur PC must have a USB midi interface and driver installed that sonar can see.
Once that's done you right-click on a sonar slider, select learn,move a 2480 slider up and down. When u click done you should see the sonar slider move when u move the 2480 slidr. Repeat for each slider and knob.
You can do this for as many sliders across all ur 2480 pages (1-16 inputs,17-24 etc) save the sonar project as a template so any time you make a new project you could select that template and start with a fresh control scheme.
