Hi everyone.
I have a VS-2480 which causes no problems - great.
And...I have a problem box : my PC. When i plug my electric guitar into anything when the PC is on, i get these nasty buzzes & interferences. Absolutely hate it.
Unfortunately, the PC offers more power (in terms of software) than the VS-2480 and my new Eleven Rack amplifier simulator links up to Pro Tools 10 via USB. The added functions in Pro Tools such as "re-amping" make it a great plus. And i sometimes play guitar with the PC on. But i don't want those nasty buzzes & noise.

So i've made plans for an audio desk that will incorporate the VS-2480, 2x 6U of 19" racks (one on each side), 2 wide screens, and on one side below i want to make an almost totally closed wooden cabinet covered (inside) in some sort of sound-absorbing material to block off the noise from the PC. Given the above-mentioned buzzing & interference, i now want to try & shield the wooden panels with something that will stop the interference.

I've read that i should use iron or nickel but i don't know if that is correct.
Has anyone done such shielding? Any tips?
Or is there another way to get rid of this nasty buzzing?

Thanks in advance.

I can't speculate at the moment about the noises, because there are so many possible reasons and solutions and I am quite tired.

But I just want to say that whatever you do, do not enclose the computer inside of a box of any kind without plenty of vetilation for the computer to breathe...... and to breathe in the right direction... a computer's fans are situated in such a way as to both pull in cool air and push out hot air..... (I take it the PC is a desktop style and not a laptop?

At any rate, don't smother that computer or it will certainly die on you.

And the screens are LED? The two major "noise from pickups" comes from the CRT screens and fans. But, I have never in my life had an issue with a computer causing pickup noise--how near are you to said computer? Does it go away when you walk to the other side of the room? If not, it's either not the computer or not pickup interference--but, potentially a ground loop in the system.

Move around the room.

Turn off the monitors. (VGA)

Try a different guitar cable.

If you have a DI that will allow you to lift the ground, employ that.

Use a humbucker pickup.

Did any of these make it better or worse?

Also...record an amp. Still have the issue?

I don't think there's any need to shield anything. I think you have a squirrelly display somewhere...or a ground loop.

transformer induced hum can also be a big headache when the guitar pickups are in proximity to rack effects, amps, or anything that uses transformers....
