Hello,

I'm ready for a new drive and am wondering if anyone could help me find the best price/website for the IBM (40GN model) 20GIG Travelstar notebook IDE hard drive. I found a couple different numbers following the model# - there's a GN and GNX model and DMA/ATA-100 (ultra)? I'm not sure exactly what I need at this point... Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks

P.S. Also, anyone have an answer for Scoobie Doo on the third page of this thread? I'm not opposed to a Toshiba or other brand, just curious as to what I'm buying. Thanks again.

Torspass, the Toshiba MK2018GAP or GAS from what I hear will be okay! Roland is really slack when it comes do upgrading their site of compatible hard drives! If you do a search for "the roll call on the hard drive replacement" you'll see that every body did the upgrade pretty painless! I went with the Hitachi DK23CA-15 to be safe after what I went through which was about six weeks of waiting for my money back of which I lost the restocking fee etc... Hope you make out alright!

I just upgraded my 1680 HD as per Steve's instruction and it went off without a hitch.
The Toshiba he mentions, though is no longer
available. I used the Toshiba TOMK2018GA 20 gig,
also available at PC Progress and for only 100 bux! If you haven't done this yet, do it now!
I can't beleive I actually made records with the
tiny little drive it came with... all the backing up to CD: what a pain in the ass.

Peace

ok so here is the deal: I've read all the posts here and I think I have the idea of what to do to replace the tiny drive in my 1880 with a 20 gig. I do have a couple questions as I'm not sure how much of all these instructions differ between 1680 and 1880, any help would be greatly appreciated!

my current set up is the 1880 with what I believe to be the latest operating system. can I just power down roland, remove the drive, insert the new one, power up roland, and everything will come up? Or do I need to reinstall the OS once I put the new drive in there?? has anyone done this on their 1880 out there? \:\)

the harddrive is purely for storing the audio-data.
no os-files on the drive, as far as i know.
be sure to back-up all your songs before you swap the drives. i did it to my vs1680 and vsr880 with no problems whatsoever. i dunno the 1880, but it should be straightformward too.
when powering on after installing do the quick initialize/format. no need to do a full 'reformat'.
enjoy!

I assume you are trying to upgrade the software on your 1880. The link you listed shows 4 options: Zip Disk Update (Mac & PC) or Midi File Update (Mac & PC).

Download the file that is appropriate to your method of upgrading (Zip disk or Midi Files) and procede from there. \:\)

--UPDATE-- I see in the "Ahh! Im in Direct Out Hell" thread that you have a 1824, not an 1880. For the 1824 OS upgrade you will need this link:

Good move with moving it back up. This thread should always be at the top.

I used these instruction to upgrade my OS and install my Toshiba MK2023GAS. Made it very easy and only took maybe 20 minutes total.

All hail Steve Lorch!!

I've been meaning to do this forever. Now I check, and my little athlon notebook has a compatible 20gb drive in it already! I can upgrade that & drop 2 birds with 1 stone! hooray. also, I think the 1680s old 6gb drive is the same as the 6gb drive in my vsr880, which happens to be really easy to change out quickly, even when racked in. So it may even be a trifecta! (3 birds) I'll let you all know.

I checked my 1680 last night and it's got 2.006 so I missed it by a hair. Looks like i'll have to deal with all the downloading/unzipping/compressing crap, and follow Steve's guide all the way through. Definitely not my forte.

i bought a 20 gig HD (toshiba) from www.mwave.com and installed in a few minutes...it was really easy! figured this might be a good time to bump this to the top since so many of us newbies are buying roland vs units on ebay and don't know how to do this!

Just press on the link and then after you get their choose VS Series compatable media guide!http://www.rolandus.com/support/support_docs/index.asp?CatID=12&SubCatID=48&Pr odID=VS-1680

This link was published in 2002. As we all know things in the computer world change generations every six months or so. The biggest drive on this list is 15 gig, and you all are talking about 20 gig. Is there a more current list than this. I would like to upgrade the PUNY 3.2 gig that is in my VS-1680, and have had a lot of computer experience so, along with this thread, I have no problem. My only problem is cash, so if I can find a drive on ebay that is compatible, I will go that route. I was just hoping for a more current compatible list... But then we are all working with machines that the manufacturer would probably call obsolete... despite that fact that they are still very much functionable and upgradable. (I hated to reopen this thread, but this is a very informative and relevant thread.)

Here goes...my first post on this board definitely belongs in this thread! While I was in the middle of working on a musical, I ran into the hard disk space limitation and this site has helped me through the process of replacing the drive without a glitch! Many thanks to the original poster.

The Toshiba MK2023GAS is purring (well I think it is, I really can't hear it that well) nicely inside my 1680 and I think it's safe to say I have enough room for my Christmas musical now.

I look forward to gaining many more insights on this forum.
