I have an 1880 and I saw 20 gig Toshiba's on E-bay. It's 4200 rpm, 2MB buffer, 12 ms, 100MB/s, 44-pinATA-5. They don't show any model number and I'm not that good with all these specs so just wondered if anyone knows if this would be compatible with the VS-1880. They're only asking $35 and I could really use the space. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What do you do with all the song data on the old hard drive... do you have to save it somewhere? and is there an idiot's guide to do this.My machine is totally stand alone!

The VS1880 stands alone, so to speak, but I purchased a plextor CDRW that's compatable. I have the 6 gig hard drive that is set for 3, 2 gig partitions. When the drive starts getting full or I'm done with a project I use the CD Backup function. When everythings backed up I re-format the hard drive and good to go. That may be a good post as there is probably a variety of ways to back up material and my way takes a while but I just got it out the manual and have been doing it this way since.

How does this backup to CD work? What additional gear do I need and what are the cable connections?
Thanks in advance

I just bought a Toshiba MK2023GAS from an eBay BIN here for 45 clams, $54 w/shipping. He says they're factory sealed and he has 20 of 'em. We'll see. If anyone is still looking for one of these, I'll let you know how it worked out...

Okay, that was easy and quick. And cheap. Seems to be a good eBay transaction. I got my drive today, installed it, it took maybe 25 minutes tops...piece o' chicken. The drive seems to be quiet. Gettin' ready to do a physical format overnight.

Thanks, Mr. Lorch ;\)

So I can buy one of these to replace my 6 gig internal after OS upgrade? This drive looks cool?

http://cgi.ebay.com/20-NEW-SEALED-Toshib...1QQcmdZViewItem

Also when I reinstall the old drive (with songs still on it) back in will all the song still be there and usable? Or will the hard drive need to reformat again before it is usable?

Stan

Yes, that MK2018GAS should work, Stan. That's the same guy I bought my MK2023GAS from. He's fast. Regarding formatting the old drive after reinstalling it...you'll lose everything on a format. But why reinstall the drive to get to your old songs? Just back up and VERIFY your songs first (before you power down for the drive upgrade) then you won't be swapping out drives.

Do I need reformate when swapping drives? If I leave the tunes on the drives and just swap them can't I just power up?

I hate the dern cd burner. I only use my 1880 for drum recording the rest I record on 'puter. On the 'puter I'm spoiled by USB hard drives swaps as backups.

stan,
no need to re-format. The swapped drive will look just like it did when you took it out.
That is as long as nothing bad happened to it while it was out
Also, check out a Sound Vault. They are advertised on the planet.
It may be the best thing for a VS since sliced bread. My burner gets used only for burning audio CDs and permanent backups/archives now.

Thanks for the info. For a grand total of $54 (including shipping) and an investment of 30 minutes, I successfully completed a sweet upgrade to my 1880. Eight partitions. Nice.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the guide & the forum, wanted to show my appreciation with this update:

Installed a brand new unformatted 40GB 5400 RPM Toshiba MK4032GAX HD in my '98 VS-1680 and it's working great! (I know I can only use 2GBx8 but the drive was only $55/ebay).

Used to get "DRIVE BUSY" while recording to 8 tracks at once (MTP/MAS)- I tested it several times (until the disk filled up), it's no longer a problem! I know if I get it again it's not the hardware, it's because I didn't defrag or reformat.

Comments:
The 1680 didn't recognize the unformatted drive until I formatted & partitioned & set as an active drive using my laptop. (2GB primary partitions, FAT16)

I couldn't get the drive to fit back into the 1680 until I turned the 1680 upside down. The guide + the slot didn't line up perfectly. (Don't force it!)

The new drive is *dead* silent.
Good luck, Dave

I just put a new 20 gb drive (Hitachi Travelstar 5k80-20) in using these instructions - took all of 15 minutes. Thanks, Steve ...

Hi, I'm new to this forum as I've just got an 1880 to supplement my 2480 [yes, I DO need to record 24 tracks..!!! it's also a lot easier to carry 'round an 1880 for domestic overdubs...]...

Anyway, I've just looked at how to change the hard drive and am a little puzzled by:
 Quote:
14) You'll see a green multi pin connector at one end. This is attached to the metal sheath with a strip of double-sided foam adhesive tape. You may have to pry the foam tape off he sheath with a butter knife or some such thing (I just used my fingers)

15)Slide out the connector and old drive from the sheath. Take note of which side of the drive is up or down in relation to the sheath and cartridge so you don't put the new one in upside down. Also take note of where the drive slides into the sheath in relation to the 2 foam sheets that also go into the sheath

The green connector for the 12GB drive in my 1880 isn't stuck to the foam so why is the foam necessary? can I not just screw the new naked drive into the caddy? The directions I read on a Laura Tyson explanation didn't mention anything about foam... and not bothering about the foam would make everything so much simpler...

Apologies if this has already been covered by some one else... there's a lot to read...

Never heard or seen anybody use foam of any kind in an 1880, or 1680, or 880..... basically all the same hard drive design.

Just use the four screws to attach the new hard drive in the caddy and gently push the caddy/drive into place until you feel it connect securely. If you're toting the VS around a lot, then put the two screws back in to hold the caddy into place... probably good to put the metal cover back on also.
But if it's just sitting around on a table top at home/studio, there's not much reason to screw the caddy back to the frame and put the cover back on unless your drive whines, or makes other intrusive noises that will affect your recordings.

If you can get a hold of another caddy, you're better off in the long run because then you can have two drives, with caddies, ready to swap out when you need more space than one drive can hold or simply want to keep one set of recordings on one drive and another set of unrelated work on another drive.... etc.
