Follow that video I posted and do EVERYTHING in it step by step. I'm almost positive your MBR is fucked.

Ok, did it.
Just for reference...at 2:47, where it ask you to select an OS, nothing shows up for me on that screen.
I entered the two prompts, and were told both finished successfully.
I hit restart about 5 minutes ago, and I'm stuck on that bluish screen again. Will wait a while before doing anything to it.

Ok
Yes wait it out this time. At some point it will probably ask for a disk.

I entered the two prompts, and were told both finished successfully. Did you change the boot sequence or take out any usb or cd disk? You want to do that in order to have the first boot be your C drive.

anyway,
for people using Windows 7 & 8, i recommend using the built-in disk image utility instead of using freebie like Macrium.
the Windows 7 disk image utility never failed for me in hundreds of imaging and restore.
when i tested Macrium a couple years ago, it failed 2 times out of 4. which makes it a POS.
i don't know if it got any better in the last 2 years...
i have been using Terabytes products for the last 2 years. which also never failed in also a few hundreds imaging and restore.

So here's the latest...
I burned that Windows 7 ISO to disc. Popped it into the laptop, and things were fine until it told me I needed a utilities disc.
I went to the website and it looks like there is no utilities disc.
So it looks like that isn't going to work.
However, I'm not sure what did it, but after opening up the computer this morning, it booted from hard drive and told me there were problems with start up, and that they needed to be repaired.
After about 15 minutes, the program told me the problem couldn't be fixed.
However, they also told me that I need to remove any devices I may have attached...and of course I had my external hard drive connected.
Doh!
So, I removed the external drive and restarted...and...temporary success!
it looked like my image recovery worked, and I was able to log into Windows 7.
I played around for a minute, and then decided to shut down the computer.
Wanna guess what happened next?
After I started back up it went into "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD".
Soooo...after that happened I shut it back down, restarted, and hit F2 to check the bootup priority.
Hard drive was first, DVD was second.
So, the boot order was right. I pressed F10 to save and exit.
After I pressed F10, the computer restarted and went back to the Windows 7 log in screen!
So, right now it appears that the only way i can log in is to go through the following process:
1. Turn the computer on and press F2 2. Look at the boot order and verify it is correct 3. Hit F10 to save and exit
I haven't poked around once logged in to see if anything is acting weird.
But, I can at least get into the system...and that leads into the next question...
Is there anything I can do to verify the problem?

Well, it seems there are loads of tools, I'm just trying to figure out what's best.
Right now I'm running the disk analysis that you use before defrag.
If y'all got any other tips let me know!

Ok try this
1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer. 2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears. 3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next. 4. Click Repair your computer. 5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next. 6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt. 7. Type BOOTREC /FIXMBR, and then press ENTER. 8. Type BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, and then press ENTER. 9. Type BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD, and then press ENTER.

Ok, it looks like Windows is installing a ton of updates (I did my system image in August), so I will try this after the computer shuts down.

Ok
Do you have an antivirus program? If you can and after you're done with ALL the updates, try running it.
If this all doesn't work?
Download Kill Disk and wipe your drive and try again.
Kill Disk

I have AVG but downloaded Malwarebytes. Right now MB is doing a full scan.
Do I still need to run AVG, or do the two check for the same things?

the 2 basically check for the same thing.
the free version of Malwarebyte is On-demand scanning only. Avira is a real-time antivirus.

With the choices you have for a virus scan? I would maybe stop the scan and see if you can reboot with no problems. Then if that works we'll get you another antivirus

Hitman Pro 3.7 is a good On-Demand scanner.
it uses 5 different anti-virus engines. 5 is better than 1.
http://www.surfright.nl/en
the free version won't remove malware but i like to keep it around as a 'second opinion'.
and it's a phuckin speed demon. scans the whole machine in about 2 minutes or so.

If it's something that a dummy like me can pull off, then yes, I will
Unless, of course, it's porn that got me, then I'll make something up.
But seriously...the system image I restored was from August. When the image is restored does it wipe out the rest of the hard drive, or will MB be able to scan for things that could have done damage up to the time my computer went to shit?

when you restore it's like you go back in time, so it won't find the new virus that you may have gotten afterward.
unless, the virus, if indeed there was a virus, was able to mess with the MRR in some ways (MBR rootkits, which are pretty bad because they are mostly 'invisible'). but when you restore the MBR is usually restored along as it was. depending on the software used to restore and blah-blah-blah. lol
but i'm no expert. so take it for what it's worth.

Should this be the next step after my scan completes?
Or should I try to shut down the computer, start it back up again, and if it goes back into "insert CD to boot", then pop in the Win 7 disc?

judging by this log alone, there was no malware or virus. those are just add-ware stuff. ----- Now I want to figure out what I can do to keep this nonsense from happening again. if you are using Win 7 make a disk image using the included Windows utility.

I think I tried to make a disk image with the Windows utility last time, but it wasn't working right.
I kind of want to wipe this thing clean and start all over again...but I'll resist that notion for now!

With a laptop you shouldnt keep the charger plugged in. That will wear out the battery quicker. Around 80% charge is recommended for around the house. Taking a long trip you can charge it to 100%.
Seeing how you had no viri then fixing the Mbr to make it work the Mbr was the problem. Still thinking the 2 different "platforms" Vista and 7 is what screwed the Mbr up. I still recommend a full version Os. Good that your up and running!
