The link at integrand is dead. So there seems no place anymore to get to the VS Reaper plugin for Roland VS file conversion.

Does anybody know where to download this file?

Thanks.

Frans

Long time "lurker". I successfully converted my VS880ex to a CF reader a while back. Love the convenience and speed. I recently upgraded my computer to Win7 and installed the latest version of Reaper. I sure would appreciate getting a copy of the latest plug in that will allow my VS880ex files to be used with Reaper. Thanks. D.

Irecently downloaded the reaper plugin courtesy of bear--now:
This is a old question about an old subject, concerning old equipment submitted by an old man.
I have a Roland VS880ex version 3.20b c/w VSF-1 card. I have converted it to a CF hard drive and it works beautifully. I have two DAWs: HPG70 Pavilon laptop running Vista and a newer desktop running Windows7 which will become my DAW. Reaper is loaded on both machines as well. I am initially trying to get my Roland files transferred to the laptop.
So far I have.
Confirmed there is data on my CF card (4Gb no partitions) and removed the card from my Roland VS880ex.
I have a CF card to USB reader which I connected to the USB port of my laptop and inserted the CF card. My computer recognizes the card and I can see the file names of the 17 songs I have listed on the card. They are SONG0001.VR8 up to SONG0017.VR8.
Within these files are lines of characters “ .. + “ which I assume are the tracks. I cannot copy or move this information into my laptop because I get a message “The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name”. I downloaded the VS-Reaper plugins (thanks to Bear), and extracted the files. I copied the reaper_vs.dll plug-in 640kb into the Reaper FX folder (found in the program files). According to the info I could find in the forum, if I have a CF card that is all I have to do.
I opened Reaper, went to File/Open Project/G:VS-880/SONG0001.VR8 (the list of 17 songs titles show up on this drive which is the CF card). I opened the file and saw two lines of symbols that looked as follows: “ .. † “.
I changed the file extension to All Files *.* When I go to highlight the file to try to load it into Reaper I get the message “The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect”.
This old man would appreciate any suggestions or specific areas on the forums to review. I have spent the last number of evenings reading old and older posting until my shoulders hurt and my neck aches. I love this old beast (VS-880) and it works well for me.

Hi, sorry you're struggling with this. It takes time to get it figured out, but once you do, it should be easier the next time....... that is, until the next time is three months later and you've forgotten how! encouraging words, eh?

I'm confused by your comments about "Within these files are lines of characters..." and "I opened the file and saw two lines of symbols..."

What are you opening the files with and why?
Windows itself can not do anything useful with the files. any changes you may make to them by opening the files and browsing through them with a Wondows program, such as notepad, or Word (accidently, or otherwise) can render them useless to the Roland and/or the PC tools that can interpret and convert them.

Assuming that you do not have VirDis, nor intend to get it at this time, there are just two reasonable methods to get your VS tracks onto the PC and into a program that allows you to further manipulate them. You've mentioned Reaper and the .dll plug-in that bear provided to you. That is one method - the other being the VSWaveExport tool that converts the VS data to .wav file format tracks, which I would assume you also received from bear with his generous utilities bundle.

Using the Reaper plug-in requires only that it is installed in the correct Reaper folder and that you open the correct VS file from within Reaper. Reaper takes care of importing the tracks into its main window without any other intervention by you.

I don't currently have Reaper installed on this computer, nor do I have any VS songs handy to open in Reaper to refresh my memory on the process, but hopefully someone who does will answer your request for help soon.

If you have it, but haven't tried it yet, you should also take the time to discover how VSWaveExport works. It will convert your VS Song tracks into .wav files, which you can then import into any DAW you like, including Reaper.

You cannot use a CF card directly into reaper... only a ripped image of a backup CD, or a SCSI bus device (Hard drive, zip drive etc).

The files produced by the IDE BUS (either onto harddrive or CF card) can only be converted into wav using the VSWE program.

Of course, once the tracks are converted to wav by the VSWE program you can import into reaper (or any other DAW)

Oh yeah! That's one of the reasons I preferred the scsi/cf card route over the IDE route...... forgot about that one! Thanks for clarifying once again, bear.

Hello. I recently acquired a vs890 with cf drive. Google search landed me here looking for general info and conversion utilities. It's great to see there is still an active interest in these machines.
Like post above I'm wanting to copy cf card to pc via card reader and convert to files wav to use in a daw. Noticed it's not working with macs. What are system requirements for running the wav conversion programs? Could I get the links also please? Thanks

Just a quick reply to Bear and Uptildawn as your response is way faster than my re-accessing my computer. Thanks for the info. I will re-mount my trusty steed and again charge that "windmill" that seems to be my nemises. It takes me time to sort this stuff out but I will be working on it, and promise to advise you at some point of my level of success. One lucky thing is I reloaded the CF into my VS880ex and my files were still there uncorrupted.
Uptildawn regarding the files query: what I did was take the CF card out of my VS880 and place it into a CF card reader that was connected to my pc via a USB port. Windows Vista recognizwd the card and the file name but not the files inside the files. I think you correctly stated that Windows cannot recognize these files. I shall persevere., and thanks. D

Hi, I know it is a bit off topic but your discussion has awakened in me the following burning question: Meanwhile I also have moded two VS880s with IDE to CF Card adapters. I´m still afraid to use the CF Cards full of VS Songs in a Windows computer. Just got two CF cards (out of five) that are working with the VS880. But according to ArthurMGD it appears to be safe to store VS-data from a CF card on a Windows PC and transfer it without prejudice later back to a CF card/VS880. Is that correct? Until now I've got my songs stored on 2 SCSI-HDs. Of course, now both are full to the brim and 18 years old. I am just looking for a convenient and save way to exchange songs (in playable format) form one VS880 to another with a Win7 computer. The song names are probably not displayed, right? Could VSWaveExport be helpful in that case (correct song names)?
Thanks!

It is safe to READ a CF card in a windows machine (although the data is only usable if you use the VSWE program - the regular window file system cannot see the files correctly)

If you WRITE to the CF card from the windows machine you will screw up the data and it no longer be readable from the VS...

You CANNOT COPY a CF card to another card on the windows machine and then use it on the VS - the data will be lost.

Actually I will amend that - you cannot use NORMAL WINDOWS COPY to make a new CF card for a VS... there MIGHT be some special program that does an exact sector by sector image copy that would work... but you are in experimental land here...

Hello,

I'm wondering if the lock-slider on the card (as at least SD-cards have, I'm not sure about CF) would already be sufficient to prevent the PC writing to the card ?

Best regards

Do you have a copy of the VSWE you could send me? I am in dire need of it before my over 10 year old VS880 HD dies and leaves me empty handed. I will also send you a message internally but am posting this so others can see my request. Thanks.

OK, I found this page
http://vspro.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=wazzup&action=display&num=1166149214
containing instructions and links (look for word 'here' in the first three steps) and the links are still good as of now (even though Firefox seems to have some doubt about malware content of the linked site ps139.com).

Not sure if the versions are the latest though. I made a few tests and the very first one runs in a wrong speed, the others are fine. The DLL is reaper_vs_0991.
