This will, I hope, save a lot of time about upgrading your VS-840 to the EX in order to install a flash card reader.
1- You don't need to build your own circuit board, look on e-bay, I found one for $50. The goal is to have a 1gb memory (just like 10 zip disks) and get rid of the noise from the zip drive. Link to one already built CF board example .
or look for user: sorensgearshop
2- Before installing this CF card kit, make sure to have your VS840's firmware updgraded to the EX version. You CAN update the first update via midi, but you NEED to have a pre-formatted vs840 100mb zip disk containing the $SYSPRO file. Unlike what Roland claims, don't waste your time upgrading to EX via midi, it does NOT work.
3- Also, if you have 2 840 to upgrade, your zip disk can only be used ONCE. After that, the 840 adds a small file on the Zip disk called $USERID to make it impossible to use the upgrade zip disk twice. You'll need to format your disk and re-add the $SYSPRO2 file .
I know all of the short cuts of the 840 by heart, that's why I wanted to stick with this recorder. If you're actually shopping for a recorder, I'd recommend you to look for more recent ones.
I hope it saves someone's time

I want to upgrade my VS-840 to EX so I can use the SD card upgrade. But..My zip drive just started to fail. I put in a zip disk that had a song recorded on it and when I went through the shutdown/save/eject process the drive started clunking like it was formatting the disk. After it finally ejected I put the disk back in and it says "format disk" and that is the only option I get. If I hit "no" it ejects the disk. If I hit "yes" it says "media error" How can I up grade if my zip drive doesn't work? Will I need to replace the zip drive first? Where can I get the upgrade to EX zip disk? I doesn't look like it is on the Roland page. Thank you, Richard

Definitely DO NOT use any other disks to "test" that zip drive any further!! You'll destroy them as quickly as inserting them. That drive has developed the infamous "click of death" and there's no recovering it.
You'll need to replace it in order to recover any other songs to the VS you've already stored on zip disk. I'm afraid the one disk may already be a gonner....

Hi all, I currently have a VS-840GX with 2.51 firmware. Can I flash directly to EX firmware 2.05? or are there other steps I must take?

The U.S. Roland website has all the updates available for any of the VS line, as well as support/contact info. They used to make zip disk os updates available through the mail... you'd need to contact them to find out if they will still send them today...... used to cost $10, IIRC....... don't know if they still charge for them. 840 updates that you can download to PC, then copy to Zip, if you have the right hardware to do so: http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/444/downloads
840ex version os: http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/445/downloads
I thought I remembered seeing threads and posts in this forum that described the mods other people have done. You should probably do some searches here to find some of that info. You may need to try different keyword searches to find the info you need, but I'm sure you can find it. I'd suggest looking as far back as three years, or more if that doesn't cut it.
You might do a search for the original poster's username: Vs840ForEver , since they seemed to know what was going on with the hoops to go through to perform the transformation to ex.

Thanks, I think I understand how to upgrade to the SD card and I have read the directions. I just don't understand how to upgrade the VS-840 to the VS-840EX. I checked on the links you provided. If I understand correctly I am to use the VS-840EX System Update 2.05 (PC - SMF)on the roland VS-840EX page, convert that to a Zip disk and go from there? I will reread the other post but if anyone can confirm how to do it please let me know. Here is a question I sent to Roland tech support.
Please help me find a zip disk that will upgrade my VS-840 to an VS-840 EX. Thank you, Richard Hi Richard, Here is their reply.
The VS-840 and VS-840EX were two different products and there's not a way to "upgrade" the VS-840 to a VS-840EX unfortunately.
Sorry about that.
Kind regards, Roland Product Support

You'll need to consult with the people who successfully made the modifications in the forum threads that deal with this. I'm afraid I will be of no help, since I don't use the 840 at all.

Same problem here.
The midi upgrade method works fine to update a VS-840 from 1.02 to 1.05, but does not work - in my case, anyway - to upgrade from 1.05 to 2.05EX
And Roland no longer provide a download for the "Zip Disk" upgrade.
See http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/445/downloads
Only a Mac and Windows midi method upgrade.
Can anyone with the VS840EX version 2.05 zip disk upgrade method please add to this thread, and post a location of the file or email it to me, and I can put it somewhere where it can be hosted.
Regards
iDominic

I'm giving up posting and sending e-mails seems to be dead end,it's too old nobody bothers to read or reply and I'm given the impression from were I come from I'm an outsider.
We are in 2016 the update is not available by Roland. Upgrading to an EX can't be done by either method "MIDI or ZIP". This site as very old posts and most members are either gone or lost interests. I've found this site but I think it's becoming a graveyard.

Skippy72....
This site can be about old Roland digital recorders, but talking about my experience here, everytime I ask something, I have an answer.
About the upgtade to EX... right now I download the file from the Roland web from the same link leaved in this thread...
http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/445/downloads
To do this you have to search for a software that transmit Sysex files via midi... something like this
http://www.midiox.com/
...at the time I do it, I used Cubase VST 5.... the process itself very straightforward...
With this done...... now you can do a mod in the VS media..... you can do it with CF or SD cards..... I recommend you to read a thread right here about SD cards and why they initialisated everytime you turn On the VS-840 EX...
http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1468479#Post1468479
... if you read the complete thread.... you will know the best way to do this mod.
Good Luck!
