What Jazzooo suggests about independent filmmaker is a good suggestion, I have done it but it was years ago. There are millions of people out there that want to and can do the same thing as everyone here on this board. The pool is too huge, it got larger as the technology make things so much easier so it comes back to trying to win the lottery and everyone knows how poor those odds are. If someone said they plan on making a living by winning the lottery you'd think the were nuts. We have some nuts on here...but good luck!

I never have posted this before but I had a good connection in the business, Steve Berkowitz, an A&R guy for Sony at the time, our brothers are friends. I only used this connection once and it wasn't for me. In the 90's I was in a band with a 15yo female singer, Jenny, her father was in the band as well. I have kept in contact with the daughter, she moved to Florida, and she has matured and started writing her own songs and went into a studio to record a CD. She sent me a copy and given my odd taste in music I really couldn't critique it's commercial appeal but this woman can sing so I sent it off to Steve Berkowitz. His response was curt, "Jenny should take singing lessons". That was one response I wasn't expecting, nothing about the tunes. So I listened to the CD a few times with this in mind and all I could think of was a habit Jenny had of a kind of cry(?) in her style of singing. So even with a direct link to a decision makers hand didn't pan out, it is a tough line of work.
She is still plugging away using the name Jaia.

You could make as much money repairing bent coat hangers and broken clothespins as the average musician does these days.. and work from an abandoned van down by the river.

my best friend down makes his living completely from music, but he diversifies:

he gigs 3 nights a week usually;

he has a cool recording studio and really knows what he's doing being the board;

he teaches, both privately and at a college a few hours away, once a week.

he's supported his family of 5 for 25 years doing this.

I know a guy who has been making a good living for his entire adult life. Playing, booking other bands and most importantly sort of advertising for people by getting them to sponsor events, festivals fairs and such. he is not great musician either. He plays rhythm guitar, sings marginally and picks the best musicians in Kansas City to gig with.
The dude does very well. His primary pitch is ALWAYS what's in it for the other person -being the sponsor- the band he is placing and such. Very altruistic and successful. Nice very sweet person too.

I guess nobody likes your idea, Jazz. ;\)

Although, it's a good one. Ironically it's the same approach I took. Even though I am 'connected' up the ass, I never asked Ms-Ex-Surf or any of my fiends in the business for help finding music gigs - not once. I literally started at the bottom the same as anyone with zero connections. I did just that, looked for the NEXT breed of filmmakers and started building relationships. However, there's several avenues to sell your wares, indie films, music libraries, video games, movie Trailers, promo gifts (like you did), ghost writing, bumpers, whatever else…To this day the most/fastest money I made was doing bumpers and a logo for a science magazine called Seed, $2,000 for each 10-15 seconds of music. How long does it take to write 10-15 seconds of music? Shit like this….

Fast forward to today and I still agree with you. Currently I don't have all my eggs in one basket. Company with Ms-Ex- Surf, producing a book/film rights, writing a feature film, developing a TV show. You have to diversify or you'll stagnate and die out there. There's really no such thing as a big break for 99% of people who've become successful. I've always said it's a series of small breaks, then set backs, then more small breaks that all add up to a career.

Re Jaia,

The issue I see/hear there is that the music itself sounds dated... in an uninteresting way. Nothing to do with her actual voice, mostly. Although, her style does sound fairly typical of any number of undeveloped female singers online, so her only chance is singing over music that is unique and fresh. I can't see any opportunity to use that song in the film or TV world. (The #1 problem of female singers I hear about from older people. That there is no "there" there. No slam, just an opinion.)

Here's an example of an "old/retro" sound that I def could use for my projects. Imagine this song in a dark cable show. That or a Tarantino/Scorsese-esque film. For my projects I want a song like this BEFORE any label signs them. I want to use it first.

Diversification was the goal. Didn't happen. It will mean moving to a different market. You can't teach here. You can record. There are no paying live gigs. There aren't MANY non paying live gigs. Not a good town to be in for diversification.
