Hi

I've recently bought a VS-840 from eBay, with a working zip drive, and have almost immediately upgraded the firmware from 1.02 to 1.05 and have purchased an installed an IDE to SD card adapter.

At this point I have a 4Gb SD card, with recordings on, and admittedly the VS-840 initialised the disk, and created 4x 1Gb Primary partitions on it, but it only uses the first partition.

As I'm not a Windows user - except when I cannot possibly avoid it - this means I mount /dev/sdb1 into /mnt/zip and use

wine Br8wavNEW.exe

and I can (now I've got the "new" version of the BR8 to Wave software) convert my .VR8 files to WAV files and import them into audacity.

No need to upgrade to 2.05EX, which seems to be pretty much impossible to do anyway...

So, what was the reasoning behind advising to upgrade to v2.05EX? Does it give any additional benefit?

A VS-840 running 1.05 can write to an SD card, and I have successfully imported multiple tracks into a DAW

Regards

update

Just had a couple of SanDisk Ultra-II I.0Gb SDcards delivered - these are the ones that fold in half to reveal a USB interface - and formatting that in the VS-840 just gives me a single FAT16 partition.

The only problem I can see with the IDE to SDcard adapter I bought - for about 8 including delivery from Hong Kong - is that if you switch on the VS-840 without an SD card in the slot, it sees the Adapter itself as an un-initialized disk.

So I think this probably means no swapping disks - like you can with a Zip disk - without going through the "Shutdown" process

As for the Br8Wave software, the only version I have found that works is the one you download from the Roland BR8 page

So, did you ever write to this planeteer - Vs840ForEver - to find out why they felt it was necessary?

I sent him a PM about whether he had a copy of the original Roland download of the ZIP Disk version of the upgrade to v2.05EX

but as yet - and it's early days, not disrespect intended - I have not as yet have had a reply.

As I said, my v1.05 VS-840 seems to work OK with an SD Card adapter, within the limitations I described above. I was just wondering if there were additional benefits.

But it does not seem to be necessary to upgrade to V2.05EX just to get a VS-840 working with a SD Card adapter - at least now, anyway.

Possibly the Adapters have better firmware nowadays, I realise - from reading posts made several years ago - that converting VS-840s has been going on for a while, and I'm very new to the subject.

And also, I'm accessing SD cards using Linux, not Windows. It may be that the problems lie with the OS side of things, rather than the VS-840.

So far v1.05 seems to work. And I have to admit I upgraded to that before my IDE-to-SDcard adapter arrived. So it's even possible that the default v1.02 works on a VS-840.

Then it becomes an issue if you have a VS-840GX, from what I've read - as then you have problems with the software to convert the RDAC (Roland Digital Audio Conversion) files to wav files that normal audio software can read.

I have to say that some ten years ago, I had access to a BR8 - which is why I still have both a USB and SCSI zip drive. But I was using Windows '98 and the old version of the BR8wav software to get files recorded on that onto a computer.

But I haven't really done anything with this since then, until a couple of weeks ago when I bought a v1.02 VS840 on eBay

Sorry for the long answer. the whole subject seems quite complicated, and fraught.

I'm definitely treating the VS-840 with kid gloves at the moment, I've already bricked it once, and managed to recover it - thanks to info on this forum - by upgrading to v1.05 via midi...

;-)

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I guess most threads on this part of the forum are a bit old:)

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I got a vs-840 for free couple years ago and I wanted to install a card adapter. Did the midi update to 1.05 but had trouble with the 2.05 update and so I thought nevermind and stashed the machine in my basement.

Then I read this yesterday and thought 'Hey, why the hell didn't I just try installing the adapter without updating??'. I guess I was afraid of messing up the entire machine... Anyways, today I installed my SD card adapter and it works!! I've got 518 mins of recording time now, and I can start using this baby again:)

So thanks for experimenting and sharing, I don't know if you hang out here and will read this but still.. Awesome, my machine is up and running and I'm very happy!
