Is there a way of knowing the date my vs2480 was manufactured? By serial number? Or is there info inside the machine? Just curious.

The CD model came out in 2002. I called Roland once and asked if they could tell me this by the serial number of my VS2480 CD but they said that info is in Japan or some BS. I bought mine in Oct 2002 because I did research before the CD model came out and later found the CD model came on the market. I refied my home and setup my studio that same year. If any one does find out a way to tell when each unit was manufactured, I would like to know.

Yes, Frank is correct. If you haven't upgraded the OS, you can get a rough idea when it was originally made, but there's no serial number dating like there is on, say, guitars (well, good ones anyway). Asking anything of Roland that isn't the very latest thing they are still selling is as Basil Fawlty would say 'you may as well ask the cat'.

I found how to check creation date. Press and hold the TRACK STATUS button and CH EDIT button above the fader for channel 1, While holding these two buttons down, turn on the VS-2480 and continue holding these buttons. After "Version Information" appears on the screen, you may release the buttons above the fader for Channel 1. All the info you need will be on lcd screen.

That is a good question graemest. It has boot and system create date. Check it out and see what date you have. Mine is 4/5/2004

Yes, have done that before, that's why I'm convinced it's the OS creation date, not the machine itself. When you update the OS it takes on the new date. The internal CD burners often have a sticker or inked date on them, but that's not necessarily the date the actual machine-proper was made either.
There's plenty of info of the general release dates on google/other. The 2480 came out with just a HD in 2000, with internal CD in 2002. The 2400 came out in 2003 or so from memory, and the VS 2000 came out in 2006 I think. But the actual manufacture date of the machine coming off the line is unclear. With a lot of guitar manufacturers the serial number often says the day, month and year and often the number of the unit in the year's production....but not so with the serial number of these Roland machines.
cheers, Graeme

When you update the OS it takes on the new date.
I updated the OS to 2.504 yesterday and the dates are still 4/2004. But this still doesnt clarify if that was the date it was first turned on. And of coarse it does not change the workability of the unit either. I was just curious if there is an actual way of knowing how old our machines are.

That could be the date of the OS release, couldn't it? I don't think graemest meant it would show you the date you installed the new os. The "new" os is quite old, afterall.

Would this mean that every vs2480cd would have the same OS creation date?

This serial decoder works: http://www.bossarea.com/serial/sndecoder.aspx On mine, the code is a 7-character on the bottom right of the UPC (on the underside of the machine). Mine starts with ZS.
Mine came back as May 2004, which would be about right.

Thanks JazzBassNick, my 2480 came back as June 2004 and my 1680 came back as Jan 1999. I bought my 1680 new at some point in 1999. I dont remember the exact date. I know I still have the receipt somewhere.

I would imagine that every machine that has an OS that was released on that date would register the same date, yes.

Mine is a 1680.... all three of the VS recorders I have owned were bought new between 1996 and 1999. I only have the one 1680 now, produced in July 1999.
_____________
And just for verification of my assumption, the os version on my 1680 is 2.024 (the last update before 2.5, which is for the ver 3 fx cards, which I don't use).
The date on the update midi files for version 2.024m corresponds exactly to the date that I read on the 1680, when I hold down track and status buttons to channel 1, while booting up cold - that is May 17,2002.

If going from a VER: 1 to a VER: 2 there's a further step required to be done with regards to the VS2480 OS.
Here's the info you require:

I typed my serial number in there and I got this reply. "The unit with serial number Z****** was produced Unknown."
Why did I get that result?

What product is the serial number for, specifically? That's probably the key to why you're not finding anything, but who knows unless you let us in on the secret.

This thread is in the Roland VS-2480 and the original poster is talking about the VS-2480 so obviously I'm talk about the VS-2480.

Good enough.
It wasn't obvious to me, since, having visited the website and looking up my own non-2480 VS recorders as well as one or two other Roland devices - on the BOSS serial number locator website demonstrated to me that this was for any Roland and Boss product in their database.
My apologies for not making the correct assumption about your 2480.

Hi frank, i noticed in my main manual book for the vs, if you look at the back pages, at the lower right hand page, you should see a date as of in small print, mine says as of Aug 2005, i would assume that would be the date mine was made. But it does not tell me what number mine was, I'll have to try the code thing later mines in it box at the moment lol.hope this helps even thew you found the bar code thing cool.

That date you refer to has to do with how up-to-date the information printed in the manual was, but doesn't tell you when you machine was made, or shipped...

Some of the first flyers were produced in 2000/2001. But the official announcement was January 2000.
I was part of a user group and we were feeding Roland all the wants in this new concept machine throughout 1999. When the announcement came I had already embraced PC recording and didn't pay much attention to the Jan 2000 announcement. But some years afterwards I revisited the VS2480 and I couldn't believe that everything or at least 97% of what was requested actually became a reality in the VS2480.
I was looking for a stable platform to record on around 2003 and after plenty of guarantees from Roland, users and recording artists I took a U-Turn and came back to the Roland VS platform.
Even though I do use computers to record I just love the idea of powering on the VS2480 without that little nagging voice in the background save, save, save.... Or living on the edge of your seat knowing that in the middle of a take with stress levels up the computer is going to go south at any moment. Anyway, as to dates I believe the Serial Numbers are consecutive.
The VS2480 date could be as early as 1997 given that Roland were working on these in secret. I think 1999 would have been the production phase.
Laura Tyson would know all this but she isn't around much these days.

True, but the fact that my manual's had those dates, would at least mean it was made around that time i would think, or later, but will have to see when i check it.I checked mine finally it was made DEC, 2005 #1238, concludes the date after all.

looks like I'm a few months behind this post. That link is to Boss products. Do I simply put in my serial number in the given window? I tried but "your Boss number is not found" or something like that. Am I on the correct page? Can someone put up a screenshot that shows exactly where to enter the serial number? The page I'm looking at shows this;
Boss Serial Number Decoder
Enter your Boss serial number: This serial number decoder accepts all types of Boss compact pedal serial numbers. The different types are shown in the images below. I must be doing something incorrect because my VS-2480CD comes back with a date of Feb. 1989 Ok, one of the number/letters on my unit was smudged out. Turns out to be Feb. 2004, unit #6000 off the assembly line-I suppose.
Thanks bunches Joni

Sometimes the VS2480 ZO as letters is confused with Z [0] = number, so try both.
Please post your results. I have 2 x VS2480's one of the Serial Numbers reads - July 2001
