I haven't had one problem with Reaper, but I've had this same problem you're mentioning with ProTools - total pain in the butt, very very frustrating!

I have purposely left my PC on with only REAPER running -- just so there would be no problems ;\) Worked so smoothly > just tried to load in the last previous > up comes the ERROR

My neighbor had a similar prob with PT 11 -- I started trouble shooting >>

Music shouldn't have this extension :: in its world

How do you have the quad capture hooked up to your computer?

Ctrl+P to get to Preferences, then select Audio Device from the left menu. Under Audio System, select ASIO. Then look and see what's available under ASIO Driver. After that, enable the inputs and outputs for your ASIO device (I'm assuming the Quad Capture - but this will depend on how it's hooked up).

That's where I'd start, anyhow.

Well, if that's not what it looks like now, change it back to that and your problem will be solved. ;\)

The quad capture looks very M-Audio...... If I remember correctly, M-Audio, Sapphire, Roland, Sonar, etc. are all basically the same unit..... at least past units (firewire, for instance).

The M-Audio had a long history of faulty/flakey drivers. They would work things out over time, but lots and lots of people on the forums would complain.

Not saying that this is necessarily true today, or that this is the problem with your USB unit, but I have been able to find driver issue complaints with a brief search of a few forums.....

Is it possible that Reaper keeps losing your Quad and that is why it won't let you choose anything but Wave (which is probably the built-in sound card).

Have you tried looking for updated drivers, or have you tried reinstalling the driver files when Reaper can't find your interface? Those would be common troubleshooting steps.

TRYING THIS

Open the Start menu. Right-click on Computer and choose Properties.
Click on Device Manager in the upper left corner.
In the Device Manager window, double-click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Double-click on the first USB Root Hub item.
Click on the Power Management tab.
Uncheck the box that says 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.' and click OK.
Repeat this process for all other USB Root Hub items.

Huh????

2 things -

1- don't ever check the box that allows the computer to turn off the usb root hubs if you depend on the usb connection for something to operate at all times.

2- Look for device drivers for you Quad... not for Reaper.
If you have an updated version of Reaper, leave it be. It's the Quad that I said might have faulty drivers, remember?

In fact, if you're that uncertain as to what I meant, or what to do on your own, then don't do anything yourself.
Give those suggestions to someone who can check the computer out for you.

Got it DT --- missed that -- I will hit the Roland up for new drivers --- Sorry about that >>

I have about 4 sites open == reading every thread ~ past & present ( in between tracking songs ). Looks like many have had this prob.

I did download that ASIO4AllV2 ... (If needed it )

BUT I guess if the audio does not suffer from selecting WAVE OUT instead of ASIO -- I could live with it this weekend .

Just had 3 songs to track today on 2480 , for a returning client ... Of course :: I could not give them a quick mix with Reaper ~ not being up to par ..

Hey, thanks again /as usual \

I have two builders/techs > I have used regularly in the past years-- none understand the logistics of music software/setup ..

Looking for soundcard/interface driver updates and checking to see that the interface is being recognized by a software daw is really basic stuff for a builder or tech. They don't have to know how to operate the daw beyond opening it.

After they think they've "fixed" things, they can watch YOU select the device to use in Reaper's options, then drop some wave files into a session and play them - maybe render a quick, no fuss test mix... Then close the session, reboot the pc and see if the device is continuing to be recognized.

They don't have to rebuild the entire computer and they don't need to be music software gurus, or engineers to do those simple things.

If things seem to be holding after a few reboots, then fine - you should be off and running again.
If not, then it might take more of a deeper understanding of how computers and hardware work to troubleshoot the issue. Still, they don't need to be audio engineers. They just have to know how to tweak a computer for solid performance.

The quad can't be a dud, if there are so many people around that use it without complaint - still, there are driver-related complaints and there's always the chance that it just won't play nice with certain combinations of hardware and software. That's the point at which a computer tech needs to be experienced with music-related gear, needs and expectations.

Still scratchin' my head ** how it could work fine for over a week -=- I followed BEAR & COCKOS info -=- and it locked into ASIO. \:\)

...Then I simply opened REAPER for this weeks work & it wouldn't record ?? No levels

Went to work in PREFERENCES -- & now only WAVE OUT allows the signal ..

Intermittent is not my friend ...

Gawd it was so easy in the Analog Days -- you wiggled a chord or turned a knob -- nothing else it could be

I did try your suggestion with Roland drivers -- downloaded / unzipped .. my PC rejected = yet another error .

For some reason I may go back to my old XP -- it was pretty stable .. ;\)

This one in the studio was just rebuilt in the Fall - x32 WIN 7 > new mother board ...

Really don't want to drive 2 hours North > just to have a "music" PC built .. then try to wade through the multitudes of computer shops in Silicon Valley.

But the tech & 2 shops I have used in the last 5 years -- really sound clueless when I talk of "streamlining" the system for music applications.

I have learned so much in the last 6 months just researching here /\ and good Planeteers << like yourself >> lending knowledge. So different from that first VICTOR PC , I worked with in the 80's .

The three studios I frequent in town -- are constantly stuck ....lend as much as I can >> just don't want to rack my brain on totally different softwares ( & OS) ...so I have released the reins ~ told them to find a young kid to help.

There appear to be a lot of very specific instructions for both the quad capture system update and the quad capture usb drivers.
Be sure to follow the instructions exactly.

Also, read through all the info included with the quad updates on making settings to the quad, its software and your daw (Reaper in your case) and check their recommendations against your devices.

If you're not comfortable with making these changes on your own, get someone over there to help you. They don't need to build a new machine to help you with this, by the way... \:\)

WAVE OUT still default -- at least it is continuing to operate as a mixdown.... audio doesn't sound any different from the once setting of ASIO ...
