Whether you're recording or just enjoying music, this end part of the chain is really important.

I use a focusrite pro 40 as my DAC with a pair of Tannoy Mercury M1's as my air movers.

i am using a pci CARD in an older PC setup for winXP......

Maudio Audiophile 192 card....

sounds really decent, considering.

analog outs,
into a pair of JBL 305's

i'm mixing thru a software setup using IK Multimedia's ARC 2.0 room correction.

the room has some wall corrections, some foam traps behind the audimute blankets, and is positioned in the one best position i have available in my room (i've tried three different configurations now)

I had three sets of speakers: Dynaudio BM 15a, ATC SCM 50a and trusty Yammies with the familiar white cones. DAC was a Digidesign 192 io clocked by a Rosendahl Nanosyncs house clock.

For studio work: Benchmark DAC1 and (original, which I'm told has changed) Mackie 624s.

For listening pleasure: Oppo 105 into an HK all analog 100x2 amp to Paradigm Monitor9s.

Lately, I've been using my little "Mojo Matrix" for the Oppo....and I don't know how I'll ever be able to go back. It's a PIA I have to play everything through my computer now to use the matrix....otherwise, using it as a DAC alone--not a disc or file player itself.

Humble stuff here.

M-audio Audiophile 2496 in my home computer playing through through KRK Rockit 5's or Sennheiser HD600 cans.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 in my gigging rack.

Trying to save up ~$1K to replace my barely-adequate Asus laptop with a refurb MacBook Pro for gigging with soft synths.

DAC = ART DI/O going into an M-Audio FastTrack Pro.
Monitors = Mackie 824s
Cans = Senn HD280s, Sony MDR V6

When I listen to music, I use the Sonys from my laptop. I also have a JBL OnBeat Micro (I think) that I will stream audio from the internet or play my iPod through on my desk at work. It's low profile, surprisingly loud, pretty good sounding.

Tom, you usingthe DAC side of the DIO to feed the monitors? I tried that once, actually in the stereo, as it was somewhat of a giant killer in the audiophile community--they modded up the power supply and removed the tube....but, I found the outputs way too hot to feed the stereo. Just makes me curious....I know the Mackie's have balanced and unbalanced connections....memory serves, the DIO has unbalanced connections, but just seemed to be hotter than -10db (typical consumer level).

Jamie: I go from my FMR RNP into the ART, and take a SPDIF output into the M-Audio device, which goes USB into my laptop. I don't think the connectors on the M-Audio device are probably so great, so I figured I'd use the ART. The "toob" knob gives me a finer level of control than the RNP does, which is stepped.

Outputs go the reverse - USB to the M-Audio, out SPDIF, converted in the DI/O, and then into a Mackie MS-1202. That's what the monitors are hooked up to.

Yeah, so the Mackie is controlling the volume to the monitors....that makes sense--making that hot output more functional.

...and yes, the ART ADC side is certainly better than the Maudio. Most of those just have those universal "idiot jacks" as inputs anyway. The "toob" section of the ART is a really flattering on a lot of things. I realized at some point that when I changed ADCs is when I stopped like my old TLM193 as a vocal mic--I was using the toob stage to add a nice vocal "sizzle/air" to it that wasn't there....once that was out of the picture, it was a really drab mic. I still have those old tracks done with the TLM193 and DIO--sound wonderful. Lesson 9847 in "it's all about how the chain works together".

This is my "stripped down" setup. I mean, I *could* go back into storage and get my desk and my A&H board and all that stuff. But since I'm not consistently making music these days - though I could, if I were more disciplined, and should because I should - and it's only me recording myself, this is it.

And I'll tell you, I bought that little Mackie mixer brand new in ... whatever it was, 1995? 1996? It was the second generation - the first one to be called MS-1202. The previous one I think was just called the mini-mixer or something. These things are so ubiquitous now, no one thinks about it, but it was a big breakthrough. And that little board has been incredibly useful to me for all kinds of stuff over 20 years. Among the very best and most consistently useful pieces of kit I ever bought, I have to say.

Fletcher may have stuck it on a pike and called it shit on a stick, but mine's been to three continents with me and performed all kinds of functions and the thing still freaking works all day.

And that will mean replacing the sound card....even if it were the more expensive 1010 (non LT)....PCI be dead, yo. I say that as someone whose system is PCI and can't upgrade my computer if I wanted to....

So, the next "upgrade" will be HELLISHLY expensive. So I have no intention on doing it....I'll keep this guy going....which is why I build on Windows. I can always find parts to keep some old thing going.

I just built a new machine based on a Z87 chipset ASUS MB and it has 2 PCI slots.

My RME works just fine in it - I know PCI is bridged on some of the newer MBS... but for AUDIO they still seem to work fine.

Our studio PC is built around the PCi /VIRDIS -- upgraded to 7 and a new Mother Board -- working fine now. Not too tasked. ( a touch of 2trks in REAPER for mixdowns now )

If I was still taking on video jobs -- I would have to build something new ...Still shooting :: just hand the card to the client > they can edit. ;\)

Permanent, stationary setup.
M-Audio DSM3 monitors are my mains.
Digital Designs monitors, passive, with 100W yamaha amp (these monitors are old but I know their sound and they translate well).
Echo Audiofire8 interface.

Secondary monitoring on notebook setup:
JBL LSR2325P monitors
Bose Companion Two (hey, they were $50 and go anywhere! \:\) ).
Presonus AudioBox 44VSL.

Home listening is older but still sounds good.
Audiophase 913 speakers (made in the USA by a speaker designer whose name I forget).
Infinity SM 62 speakers (very loud and punchy for their size).
Boston Acoustics PV900 300 watt, 12" subwoofer (that I got at a flea market for $25).
Yamaha 200 watt amp.
Yamaha receiver.

Headphones:
Ultrasone Proline 650
Ultrasone HFi 550
Ultrasone iCans
Sony 7506
Sony V6
AKG K240
Fostex T-20
Koss Porta-Pro
Others that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Oh, bought one of those little Focusrite VRM boxes.

For recording, the DAC is whatever is built into the VS2480DVD...still using that puppy, though I haven't turned it on in nearly a year.

Monitors are JBL LSR4328P's (with Room Calibration built-in.)

For general listening, I probably hear the most music in my car - JVC system. Other than that, cheap-ass computer speakers that came with my HP Windows8 Machine package from Costco...IIWII.

Good point, bear....I know RME has been updating drivers to help the compatibility.

I guess I mention it so he knows. It's a huge minefield....and if you're not building your own....do they even sell any PCs with slots of any kind anymore at retail?

If I build another system, it'll be analog. Tonelux summing unit/mixer....16 outs to it....mid/side EQ with the Specks back into the Burl, maybe staying mid/side and decoding in the box. But, then again....I'm a weirdo that way. I'm comfortable with that assessment. It's just easier to do some things analog. I'm tired of fighting.....if money buys easy, I'll find the money.

flatcat, I agree that the MS-1202 is a terrific little mixer. I've had one for years. I also have the 1402VLZ3 and I use it for live stuff more than I use anything else. I'm almost tempted to get the 1604VLZ3, for the extra channels and sweepable mids.
