Hi, its powered from the 2480 so no external power is needed. I think its there for other devices that don't supply power via SCSI.

Its mainly for when a drive has been used by another device and roland recommends doing it for a drive being used for the first time.

"Physical Format" for instance will help to absolutely eliminate any lingering data coruption that might be left on a drive that has been used elsewhere.

"Surface scan" meanwhile, scans the drive testing for "bad sectors" which are usually there from manufacturing. The more a drive is used, the chances of those "bad sectors" increasing are higher. Any data stored in those sectors can become corupt or lost due to this.

Its worth doing these procedures from time to time to check the state of the drive, especially if they are being used heavily. From what I know, Physical Format is not generally harmful to SSDs like SD cards, and like with conventional HDs should only be done once in a while to check the disk for errors etc, especially when transferred from/being used previously with another device.

Glad you're all sorted. Happy Recording Planeteers

I'm aware of Bill's constant development of VirDIS and it's very stable.

Any idea why we have to enter the DEVICE MANAGER -- disable to VIRDIS and then enable once again -- for the VS and vDIS to work ?? Thats a work around Bill has given us ... works == just another few steps ... no biggie /\ I guess.

So is the VS wave converter needed or not?

Nibbler - in your initial post you said you tried CF to IDE. What type of controller did you use?

Thanks,

Ian

VSWE is required to rip the RDAC files into *.wav format on PC.

Just and update on the SCSI2SD.

If anyone is in the UK and needs an enclosure/case for their SCSI2SD, then you can get one printed from Print-3DUKs hub at 3D Hubs .

It cost me just under £10 including P&P, to get a 3D print of the case from them using the the OPs design here: SCSI2SD External Enclosure .

Just download the design, upload it to 3D Hubs, choose "general purpose plastics" and find Print-3DUKs hub and just order the print, and ask them to print it as transparent as possible. The contact is Taylor. Their based in Leicester, so you might need to use that in the search so you don't have to go through pages just to find them.

They make a very good print, it might need some adjusting/filing on the connector end, overall it does what it does, protect your SCSI2SD, nicely.

Thanks to NibblerNibbles for creating and sharing his design, its most appreciated Mate.

I just got this thing. It's working right out of the box on the VS-880 VXpanded right now. This VS has a CF/SD card upgrade as well.

Both storage devices survive a machine restart without reinitializing the cards.

Bought mine LOADS a time ago used. Today, I wanted to get it running. The Flash seemed corrupted so I tried to flash another firmware. It seems as if the Windows 64bit version does not run properly - I was not able to flash the firmware. Whe just thinking of throwing everyting away, I tried the 32bit version and voila...

Tired to playback a some-twenty-track-song and it worked nice. I assume that it will work with the smaller machines if you set it up as a right disk size. I'm gonna try that (whenever I finde the time). If I had read this post (i.e. remembered it), I would not have spoiled a SCSI enclosure to hold the SD card :-(

It's not a bad thing to have an external scsi mod on hand, you know. I don't think it was a waste to do at all.
The external is read differently by the windows pc than the internal mod (for reasons I don't recall and can't explain). Personally, I prefer the external.

It feels kinda strange though, to have an external 5.25 enclosure containing just a tiny PCB with a micro SD ;\)

Oh, what I forgot to tell: I used the PCB version 5, which has the 4.6 firmware on it. The 64bit issues may or may not happen with the actual v6!

P.S.: at least I can store ZILLIONS of micro sd cards in the enclosure ;\)

Cancel that. It's working. Didn't have the SD card all the way in. But....I tried to perform a track export to the SD card and got "NO CD-R Drive Detected". I really wanted this for WAV file transfers. Is there a way to do this?

I think that operation works with CD drive only. IIRC, it won't export tracks to external SCSI either.

From page 356 of the 2480 OM:

"If you want to move audio from a project to an external device—such as a computer or sampler—that reads .WAV files, you can export any track or phrase as a .WAV file. The exported audio is written onto a data CD."

Read through the earlier posts in this thread and look at the other threads that discuss how .wav file transfers (actually extraction) is accomplished using an SD card. as dk said, the VS won't export .wav files from it to an SD card.

But, the VS file system on the SD card can be read by certain programs/utilities on a PC and .wav files can be extracted through the use of those tools - and that is how everyone here does it, because it's the only way devised.

Just a suggestion. This is why I made a post in a different topic about using an external digital recorder that has an sd card reader built in.
So many VS users are fumbling around with conversion. We all just want a few things. In my estimation...
1) stable storage (HDD or SSD) internally
2) easy conversion to .wav for export
3) quality sound capture.

Quality sound capture is such a personal topic. Some live in 24bit 96K while others are happy with other combinations. So I will not dwell on this topic.
However, it seems to me that the easiest and least expensive thing to do regarding conversion is to attach some form of digital recorder to an output of your VS (be it digital or analog).
There are so many high quality small form factor recorders. I have tried three different types. Some larger and some small. Some handheld recorders have 24bit 96khz capability. I notice no loss in sound. I load my Olympus LS20M with a 16 or 32 gig sd card and just record every mix or run through that I play.
If you are concerned about audio quality loss ( which has not happened for me) then you can use a recorder that has a digital input and connect that to the VS. In my experience, using the analog out versus the spdif out or the adat the digital will sound louder and clearer with less noise. However using the analog out with compression and the other mastering tricks can give you a great take as well without the noise.
Cheers,
Ian

This effort has been to acquire the multi-track regions of audio for transfer to a PC (and in some cases, to transfer back to the VS). It really has little to do with obtaining high quality mixes of projects completed within the confines of the VS unit - which can be obtained (one way at least) as you suggest Ian.

One other and for many a primary reason for these conversion mods, Ian, has been to reduce the ambient noise of the VS' internal hard drive. That certainly is a legitimate and important reason for someone to pursue the mod, regardless of what they intend to do with the recordings.

I copy files from the VS HD to the SD card, then I use VSWE to convert the VS files to .wav. It works perfectly and is faster than burning backup disks.
