Look at most bands from the 70's that are touring today with key members still involved. Rarely do they have the drummers that were with them when they were making their name.

Why is that? Drugs? Alchohol? Bad technique that tears up the body?

I saw buddy rich play right before he died at age 69. He was still slamming the drums even after his surgeries. But 69 is still pretty young even at 1987 standards.

ZZ top and Aerosmith being exceptions but ZZ Top could be playing to a prerecorded track. Didn't look like Frank Beard was even playing when I saw them last year.

Neil Peart is still with Rush but after 40 years (he is what, 65 now?) it takes it's toll, especially the touring.

Most times though it is what drummers do in their off hours that wears them down or wreaks them \:\)

I found most of the 80-90 year olds I meet that used to be musicians are usually drummers ... they were in shape (generally) if they did not party too hard

I think most of the time it has to do with the bullshit you put up with a drummer. Guitar players and singers (the front line) can be primadonna assholes and that's pretty much the nub of it

drummers have more testosterone and are prone to not suffering bullshit as much

two years seems to be the length of time I stay in the drum chair for any local band before they annoy the fuck out of me \:\)

Well, that's because they're drummers, now, isn't it?

(sort of a Spinal Tap paraphrase)

iCloud, you do know that Neil isn't the first drummer for Rush, right? That honor belongs to John Rutsey (deceased). Dun-dun-dun-duuunnnn \:\)

No lie on that! I thought he was close to death when he was playing in Cream.

C Jo, best wishes on what ever happens with your health. No matter what, you'll always be "hip" to me ;\)

One of the best drummer I ever played with is 60 yrs old now. He has severe back problems and needs surgery. It's a drag, I'd like him to do some tracks for me but.........

Is this still a thing? I can't think of an example north of the 70s. I mean, are we counting Adler? I guess he's fairly close to the 70s guys' scenario. Maybe the truth is closer to "why can't drummers handle their drugs like the rest of us?" ;\) And there likely IS some kind of....connection with the wild animal in some drummers that's likely a little more primordial than a guitar player. Drugs just remove that layer of self consciousness....ehh....

Local band thing is a different scenario. They have to just do more work that everyone else to gig....so, their threshold of BS or lack of dollars is understandably lower than most.

I've had three drummers die on me.

Wait… let me rephrase that. I've worked with three drummers that have since passed on to that Throne in the Sky.

And two bass guitarists (with another one ready to go any time).

Evidently, I'm rather hard on my rhythm sections… either that, or those people just live harder lives.

Uh yeah, well duh \:\)

Rush history is taught in Canadian high schools, out back in the smoke pit. btw - the R40 documentary is great. And their current R40 tour is very good.

I would say Rush and Foo Fighters have the best arena rock shows going this year. By far.

Same here. Good Lord. I've lost count? Funny you should feel responsible. Like do you tell drummers now? You might not want to play with me or you will die? OMG...WTF?

Loved every single one of those guys and they were absolutely great. I almost feel bad for drummers I play with lately. Like I'm a curse? What the hell? Not cool at all...especially when great drummers are becoming extinct. Not cool at all.

Oh every one of their deaths hit me hard, no question about it.

But now thinking of one of them, I have a really funny story about him. We'll call him "Joe" because that was his name.

Joe was a fair drummer, but an amazing vocalist. We were in our twenties, touring around the midwest in our polyester jump suits playing disco and country as a trio. Joe would sit back there on the drums, croon all night and make the ladies swoon.

Even though we were in our twenties, Joe's teeth were really bad, so he'd had them all pulled and was wearing upper and lower dentures. So one night Joe's singing a heartfelt country love ballad, when all of a sudden I hear a "rat-a-tat-tat!" on the snare drum that was totally out of place. Joe stops singing, and has his face turned away from the audience. I shrug, finish singing the song, and we take a quick break.

Joe's down on his hands and knees, looking for his upper dentures that fell out, did a rudiment on his snare, and hit the floor.

Oh my God we all laughed about that one. Joe laughed the hardest… damn, he was a great guy to hang around with.

Yep.....I have lost at least three.

First by suicide in his late twenties.

Second by a heart attack at 46.

Third was my best friend and even though a drummer :), he was probably the most intelligent and talented person I have ever known. Cancer at 41 four years ago. That still sux.

Fourth is coming real soon if he doesn't quit his drug habit. I don't stay in touch with Greg....he may have already checked out.

One thing they all had in common, though. They were all characters and they all got really pissed when I started rolling out the drummer jokes ! I am really good at dodging drum sticks. ha ha
