Planet people,

Guys I've been trying to recover some old 840 zips. I've had some success on my own but I'm a little bit of confused on the actual content of the disk reading it inside of windows 10.

I installed a zip 250 into my Windows machine, it's in AT IDE device I got from an old Power Mac G5.

After successfully installing it I was able to read the disc native inside of windows 10.

Everyone of the disc reads fine that are 100 MB there is one 250 disk that I'm unable to read one directory inside of it. This just seems to have a lot audio data in it.

I downloaded the Randy's 32-bit DLL and reaper 32 bit.

Reaper would acknowledge the zip and every time I would go load the song nothing would render inside of reaper, it would do it show progress with no error codes and I would still have a blank canvas inside of reaper.

I am assuming hear that even the windows 10 is reading these disks that I lack one conversion step in reading the disk 100% properly
And this is why reaper loads a blank project.

So my goal here is to take these disk and get the info off of them and then I'm gonna burn CD later on, I was using the reaper method because I read this was a working solution. If anyone has another solution I would love to hear about it and if anyone can look over my steps and tell me what I did and what I need to do better to get this to work, please do so.

happy holidays to everyone thank you VS planet

I don't remember seeing anyone ever post about using the Reaper conversion plugin with vs840 files.

Have you tried using the BR8 WAV conversion software utility? This software did work with the vs840, and I used it when I had a card reader installed in the vs to get the audio files into a computer.

http://www.bossus.com/support/knowledge_base/201944979

Previous versions of Windows could not read the 250 MB Zip disks due to the sector size or something like that, so they might have changed things with Win10, but it is surprising to hear that you could read the 250 disks on a windows machine. 100 MB Zip disks did not have the same problem as the 250 MB disks and could be read by a win PC.

Wish , Happy Holidays.

THank you for that. Yes the randy.dll that is used with the 32 bit Reaper.. in the txt instructions it lists the VS-840ex as a supported machine. version 0991.

I just tried the BR8Wav link you sent, and although I can read the zip from the drive in the windows explorer just fine I suppose, the app kick back an error saying that its "not a BR8 disk." .

I am suspecting an issue might be... although win10 reads the zip disks, there still needs to be something else in the chain here.

Im hunting!

anymore help would be greatly received.

thanks!

Have you tried the VSWE app? Check your PM for a download link.

In reaper - are you sure it did not just put the audio somewhere on the time line WAY off the visible area on the screen?

Do you see 2 files in the subfolder for the song - I forget the exact extension for a 840... but one of them should be a SONG.VRsomething or a SONG.VSsomething and the other is an EVENTLST.VRsomething?

Hey guys thanks for all the help.

First of all: in the root of the zip I have 3 objects,
1 folder always titled "SONG0000.VS4"
2 files that say "SONGLIST.VS4" "SYSTEM.VS4"

inside the folder above:
there are 8 items.
SONG.VS4 and EVENTLS0.VS4

In reaper, I follow the instruction and it opens nothing. The inspector to the left is empty no tracks and no data on the TIMELINE.

NEXT:
I attempted several times to get the VSWAVEEXPORT going however it says the .OCX file is missing, I placed it in my windows system folder

I have yet to figure yet the correct install of the utility, I am in windows 10

I feel I am close to the solution, I am not convinced win10 is
reading the zip 100% correctly. is there a reader utility?

thanks in advance

Hmmm looking back at my example files - all the 840 projects I have use a .VS8 extension, not .VS4

My guess is that operating system on your 840 is different (probably older) - it may be that these files are not compatible

It MIGHT be worth trying just copying the project into a test folder and renaming the files .VS8

To get the mscomctl file going you need to run regsvr on it

Place the MSCOMCTL.OCX in C:\Windows\System\ (Not \System32\)

Right click Command Prompt and then click on "Run as administrator"

Once Command Prompt is open type in "CD C:\Windows\System" and click enter.

Then type "regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx" and press enter and done!

If you cannot get it going send me the SONG.VS4 and EVENTLS0.VS4 (they are very small files) so I can look at them with a hex editor.

My email in in my profile

@bear. Thank you let me get back over to my studio room and I'll do this.

You did touch upon another issue because Windows Explorer when it shows you to drive letter of the zip drive, after the 840 there are four more letters which was not one of the branded models.

I'm going to make some disk images may be there 5 MB long as you can see the whole structure. I have another 250 zip which I think is 60% full That appears to be where the mother load of data is I'm trying to recover. Let me get on this thank you so much man.

Dll reg server failed with error code 0X8002801C
When I attempted to enter the MSCOMCTL.OCX into the registry.
Again this could be a Windows 10 thing I have yet researched the error code.

The zip drive title of the desk is, VS – 840NM50D.

I sent you an ISO file, an image of the whole file structure and files that I'm working with.

Additionally I did attempt to rename the files extension to .VS8 however the reaper.dll only recognizes.VR8 as well as the.VS4.

After I change the extension to.VR8, the same thing happened.nothing loaded end of the project.

bear, thank you again for your time.

Ummm I looked at your iso - this is a totally empty project - there are no audio tracks in it. The event list does not refer to any TAKE files. So reaper is doing the exact correct thing - opening it up, but not showing any audio.

The name of the song is InitSONG 001 - I think this is a backup of the skeleton song the VS creates....

Do you have other zip discs with supposedly other projects on it?

Happy New Year, I am back from holiday.

@bear. Thanks for looking at the image file. Yes I took for testing purposes a 100 mb zip that was only 5 megs to send you.
So I assumed it was empty.

I have a zip 250 about 60% full, I can read the zip and then when I go into the folder, like the zip I sent you it is un-accessible.

I am sure its a Windows 10 thing because Roland uses compression on the audio... more than likely its Win 10 not being able to view the compression and get a file structure for the folder, it reads the root fine though.

I asked earlier if there was a tool to read these for windows, I am running a 64 bit version.

So I am back on the task now that vacation time is over!

thanks again.

Only way I have done that is by using the BR8.exe converter

The BR8 converter program can be downloaded from Roland here: http://www.bossus.com/products/br-8/downloads/
if that's what you're wanting to try, Dar

If you're still asking bear to look at your files, excuse my interrupting.... you didn't mention who you were asking...

I would like someone to look at the files yes. I sent one that was a 5m file as a test, then I realized I could drop box a 250.

after I sorted through my zips, I found one with data on it the rest seemed blank.

So Id be grateful.

The problem bear had with the test iso you sent, was that there was no data on it that he could look at to help understand the problem.
Maybe bear will still be willing to help you, if you can provide him with the proper song file. I would suggest that you send him a PM and ask him. He does indeed know what he's doing.

for some reason this site doesn't email me on responses.

yes I sent a small image to bear. I have a larger 250zip image with some data on it. I can read its root but am locked out of the data folder.

I am still looking to resolve this.
