Any time a hard drive begins to make any uncharacteristic noises it's a good idea to make sure all projects are safely backed up in their most current version and then start looking for a replacement hard drive.
Don't wait until it crashes.

Good advice there.
Are you sure it's the HD, or is it the unit's fan? The fans are a handy thing to have replacements of too.

Oh! Another good bit of advice there, by graemest.
If the VS2000 has a software switch for the fan, as earlier VS machines have, then one way to test that idea could be to set it to OFF all the time and put it through a few hours of running. You could run a little battery operated personal fan on low speed across the VS while testing, if you're concerned about heat build-up.
That's one way to test the idea, anyway.

Many thanks for all the help. I sure it is the hard drive that has developed a problem. As rotating the jog wheel when not using playback function has the same result.

Yep, get a couple of spares while you're at it, but just curious, could you describe the sound?

It's a Rumbling sound through the monitors on playback and when I'm using the jog wheel, The Hard disk LED comes on at the same time.... I've backed my projects and formatted the hard drive, and it hasn't made any difference......

rumbling through the monitors doesn't sound like a hard drive issue to me. The hard disk light does come on whenever there is hard drive activity - using the jog wheel produces hard drive activity.
Seems like maybe you need to do some actual troubleshooting of the whole setup - VS, things connected to it, possible electrical interference, fan noises - make sure that the noise you hear is actually coming from the source you suspect and that it isn't simply in proximity to the thing you suspect.
Consider just how many things might be at the cause of "rumbling" sounds through the monitors - Could be as simple as a live microphone connected to an input, or built up low end sound - or it could be something physical - none of us can tell, without being there or at least hearing an audio sample of the sound - maybe you could capture and post a sample for us to hear and evaluate?

Yes, agree with Up. Physical noise out of the monitors, as opposed to isolating that the sound comes from the HD itself, sounds a little odd.
The 'noise' only comes out of the monitors when the red HD light comes on....is that correct? Or can you hear a noise coming from within the machine, the HD itself, too?

Sounds like you have a mic connected or an open input some where that's making the noise.

And the HD itself within the machine makes a noise? Y/N?
Sounds like you are at least up for new HD anyway, at least as part of the troubleshooting exercise. Best get one and put it in to see what happens/if that fixes it.

Hi, Yes the noise does come through the monitors when the Hd light is on....
All that indicates is that you can hear the noise in the monitors when there is hard drive activity. That doesn't immediately go to there's a hard drive problem.
We've given you a number of suggestions about what to look for and that in fact you need to do some deeper troubleshooting. There's nothing more we can do from our vantage point than to make half-attempts to respond to the scant information you're giving us.
You need to investigate where the sound is coming from as specifically as possible and under what specific conditions it occurs and report back to us with DETAILS - Sorry, just responding to half of one question asked isn't a detailed response containing information that we can mover forward with to help you figure out the problem (not that replacing the hard drive isn't in itself a good suggestion, regardless of what the actual problem turns out to be).

They never do.
Had some newbie guy PM me, answered his questions to the best of my ability/knowledge....hasn't even thanked me for doing so.
Perhaps a new Basic Manners sub-forum is required.

Newbies get so frazzled with the 2480 and its thick manual that once they get an answer, it's off to the races. Some act like coming here and asking questions is the last thing they should do and just want to be done looking like they need help. Others think their questions are stupid and feel embarrassed etc... I don't take it personal when they get their answers from us and then disappear but it would be nice to know if it helped. I just figured it did help them or they would have been back looking for another answer, LOL. Have a nice day. Frank

Noone takes poor basic manners 'personally' Frank; it reflects on them rather than on me or you. Each to their own, but it is a red-flag to me when a newbie can't even be bothered to say where they come from.
cheers, Graeme

I know what you mean. Many are afraid to say where they live as well as use their own name. Many, like my wife just want to keep certain info private and refuses to be a part of Facebook and twitter etc.
Still, when I go to the profile of some one here wondering if they are in my area and if I can help in person or if they live in the US and if it would be easier to send them disk via USPS mail, or just to find their email so I can send them my manual with out delay, it's frustrating to find those spaces blank. That's why I list my gear and fill in the blanks in my profile with the proper info. Why others don't doesn't matter too much to me tho, they have their reasons, I guess.
BUT... not to thank folks who helped, kind of sux. Maybe they found the answer some where else or on their own and didn't think to return? Your guess is as good as mine. Frank

My first vs-2000 had a rumbling noise just sitting still in record ready mode and printed the noise to the tracks. I got Roland to step in and after two repair attempts and a 5 hour drive to meet Laura Tyson, they replaced the machine.

I also purchased a mains isolation 6 way extension unit, All my problems have now disappeared. Many Thanks again guys sorry its been so long in replying..
I'm now planning to upgrade my HD from 40 to 80gb, any idea's on installing the 80gb Hard Drive....
