I had mentioned it was very easy to make an adapter that would take a normal DB25 to DB25 cable and turn it into a RBUS cable - in the process of testing my new RBUS interface I actually had to make one - here is what it looks like.
I had a Male to female DB25 cable in a junk box (that carried all 25 conductors straight through). I just took 2 DB25 crimp connectors and crimped them onto a short piece of ribbon. All you have to make sure of is that you reverse one connector... so PIN1 on one connects to PIN13 on the other. Plug this onto your normal cable, and viola it becomes an RBUS cable...

BEAR -- its only one that you have to reverse one wire of the 25 ?? I heard back awhile ago -- it wasn't that easy ?? This is great news ~!

No, you are misunderstanding - when you crimp a connector on a ribbon such that pin1 goes to pin13, it reverses ALL the other pin also
Pin12 goes to 2, 11 to 3 etc etc all they way down
The point is all you need to do is crimp each connector and it makes all the connections at once. Super fast and easy (compared with soldering 25 wires and crossing them). I just use a little vise or a pair of channel locks to crimp them. Takes about 10 seconds to make one.

Do you recommend a particular pin count size cable, bear?... 40-pin, 80-pin, floppy drive cable, whatever?

I suppose I could have figured that, but I sure don't have 25-pin ribbon cable lying around, like I do old PC cables... Your instructions made it sound like you just used any spare ribbon cable in an old junk box.... at least that's how I read it. I was just curious, not criticizing. I don't have anything to rbus to.

SOME old PC cables may work... more modern IDE drive cables have double density spacing on the wires though, and will not.
Yeah I have tons of stuff like this hanging out in junk boxes, and have been making cables like this for years. I forget that to others it may seem arcane...
However this stuff is dirt cheap and easy to buy online from a electronics hobby supply or ebay

Here, buy one of these and cut the ends off, and peel out 25 conductors from the 40. 18 inch will make 9 or 10 adapters for $2 worth of ribbon cable

or similar - this is one of the older type of IDE cables that would work - you need .050 inch pitch spacing on the wires
It is super easy to peel back just the number of conductors you want -I ususally make a small cut with a xacto knife, then just peel it off.
And then connectors like these - An RBUS cable needs to end up being MALE on both ends, so if you are trying to adapt a male to female straight through cable use 2 male connectors, if you are trying to adapt a male to male straight through cable use a female and a male connector.

The only caveat to all this - rbus signals are pretty fast digital signals - it may not work with some really cheap db25 to db25 cables, or ones that are too long...
And you have to make sure the cable you are trying does indeed carry all 25 pins across. Some older RS232 cables did not. Old printer and SCSI cables generally work fine.
I have tried this with several cables from my junk drawer and never had a problem.

I've got a load of the 40-pin IDE ribbon laying about.
Printer cables are plentiful around the house as well. I've used them for SCSI connectors on the 1680 for years...... work great!
All I need, I think is the connector ends now.
I saw some of that rainbow ribbon the other day...... I like that, too.

There was a post about making R-Bus cables from Cat5 cables, which I have on my hard drive. That is likely what C Jo is referring to.
I still have it if anyone needs it. It shows the pinouts and twisted pairs connections. Bear's unit is much simpler.
I also downloaded a pdf with similar info, showing two DB-25 connectors and straight wiring between them. Easier to read.

Hints for crimping if you have not done it -
it is easy to damage the metal housing as you grab it with a vise or pliers (if you look close at my picture above you can see I was not careful enough and did bend the metal a little...)
You can prevent this by taking a connector of the opposite sex and plug them into each other - then crimp on both.
And if you look carefully MOST connector have the pin numbers molded into them next to the pins on a male or the holes on a female - so make sure you get the 1 to 13 swap correct...

I know this is a very old thread but I'm wondering if anyone remembers doing this with any success...and other issues involved in creating an rbus cable from ribbon cable.
My question is, can the pins be moved on a 25 pin cable to fake the same results.
Why did Bear go with a ribbon cable and not just rep in a scsi cable

Just made a couple of these with pin 7 pulled out. Rather simple and they hold in place real tight. I merely widen the distance between two rows of pin for one DB25 connector and narrowed the other two rows on another connector and they fit well together for soldering. I use a male to female DB25 cable for extending the length.

Hey gang,
Enough of the homemade cables and russian dudes selling originals for $120 with $40 shipping. I went for it and manufactured a small run of some r-bus compatible cables. I used blue plugs but changed the knobs to grey for better visibility. These are factory made, professional quality cables. Doing a small run means that cost basis for me is higher than I wanted, but at least I can offer the cheapest price out there, basically equal to the original retail price from 20 years ago.
