I am trying to find out everything I can about dithering and I would appreciate opinions. I read something this morning that startled me; the author said dither should be used at every stage of the digital recording process (which makes sense).

I admit that being an old analog guy, the thought of adding noise has never quite seemed right to me. It seems the more I learn about digital recording the more I realize how much there is to know and how limited my knowledge is.

I've always been told by people I've grown to trust that dither should be applied only once if possible and only at the very last stage. Then again, I tend to record at 24 bit, mix and edit in the 24 bit realm and use very few plug-ins (generally) that use 32 bit floating - then dither down to 16 bits only when creating a 2-track mix for audio CD, or an application that can't play 24 bit wav files.

It seems to be different, if you find yourself changing the bit rate for various steps of your process..... I suppose that makes sense, since the noise introduced by dithering is meant to keep the wanted audio from being damaged in bit rate changing.

Maybe the author was actually suggesting that dithering should be used at every stage of the digital recording process - that requires a bit rate change to the resulting output files?.....

This remembers me the discussion about the dither options in my VS-1824CD. See: Dither at VS-Planet

It was reading the VS guide that led to my query. there is a contributor who suggested dithering at every level.

Question: have you ever heard "too much dither" in a recording? What does it sound like?

How would a person recognize when they're hearing a recording with too much dithering?

You might be able to come up with some test that you could perform for yourself to test your idea.

Maybe check out a number of the youtube videos that discuss dithering and show tests and explain what they did to produce the test. Then you might apply that to tests where you purposely dither multiple times.
