I've hooked up an external hard drive to my vs 2480. The 2480 recognizes the hard drive and it has been formatted; I can see the partitions in the project menu. My question is how do I transfer my mastered tracks to the external hard drive, and how do I retrieve them? The only option I've found for track export is the option used when burning to cd. Thanks.

You don't need to use track export to move the tracks to your external hard drive.... Use the same methods you would use to copy your project files and tracks between partitions on the internal drive. You can create a new project on the external drive and export tracks/import tracks to that project... but there's no need, if they're already in a Master Project. If your mastered tracks are already in a "Master Project", simply copy the whole project over.

Or maybe I'm misreading your question -
If your mastered tracks are still in the original multi-track projects and you want to combine all the mastered songs into one new "Master Project" and you haven't already learned how to do this on the internal drive and between partitions, then near as I can tell, your best bet might be to use REGION IMPORT. I'm sort of guessing, since the 1680 works somewhat differently in many ways..... but according to the 2480 manual (pg 267 of the pdf version), it would appear to be your solution.

You would first create your new Master Project on the external hd, then call up your Import options (wherever those are), choose the source project and tracks, then direct the destination tracks to be those in your new master project file.

You'll have to go read the text for yourself, evidently. My efforts to copy/paste from the 2480 reference manual are thwarted by an error message - ugh!

I hope this at least points you in the right direction...... Somebody more knowledgeable about the 2480 will chime in, I'm sure.

What you're asking is a little misguided.

Adding an external drive to the VS through SCSI is the same as having a drive internally (internally its IDE, externally its SCSI).

Forgetting, for the moment, about all the other stuff you can do with the VS, the basic idea of the external drive it to make a safety back up copy of the "projects" you have on the internal drive. You simply "Copy" the project(s) from one drive to the other. You choose which projects you want to back up from the "source" drive location, and copy them to the "destination" drive location. The external drive is for making backup "copies" of "projects."

If you want to export a 2-track mix "from within" a project, this is where the CD burner comes in. (Or you can send the mix in real time to any other recording device through the digital or analog outputs from the VS).

Hope that helps.....

AFAIK, you can also select the external drive and record projects directly on it. I have not done that myself but I have copied projects to mine.

I have found, for backups of projects, it's just as easy to burn project backups to DVDs. I installed a DVD burner in VS2480CD years ago and seldom copy projects to the ext. HD I have.
I have a stack of HDs and a stack of DVDs take up way less space.
I do double backups to DVD and an extra to the external HD of the most important projects.

If your VS is a CD model, I recommend installing a DVD burner as well as having the external HD.
Good luck

Thanks for the clarification Bear; so in essence I'm not technically backing up to the external hard drive, I'm copying my project to the external hard drive. This explains why I was unable to transfer the project to the external hard drive using the back up function; I guess I need to use the copy function? Or maybe the import or export function? Thanks again.

RCLAP :: think of the External as another partition. As you access your internal drives separate partitions -- You will notice the EXTERNAL will appear on your screen ( at the bottom )

Now you can access the drive -- Copy over any Projects on the Internal > Direct to your waiting External ..

Are you asking maybe about the Ricoh mp6200s? That's the closest result I could find searching for an mp600s, or any Ricoh optical drive.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/JcoAAOSwVLVZd6lG/s-l300.jpg

My guess is that you could only try it to find out. I don't know who made the actual optical drive inside the case. You may or may not know that there are very few cd drives that have ever been known to be able to write and read VS project backups. I'm guessing that's also the case with writing audio CDs...

Welcome to the Planet, by the way. Hope you find the answers you need.

Here is a list of 'compatible' optical drives. The VS recorders, as you know are very fussy with regard to drives that will work. YMMV.

Note that your Ricoh model is listed, but didn't work on my (then) 1680.

Here is a list of the working drives:
JVC --
XR-W2010R2626
XR-W2040
XR-W2042 ***

TEAC --
CD-R55S
CD-R56S
CD-W512SB

RICOH --
MP6200S-- didn't work for me.

PLEXTOR QPS --
CD-R PX-R412C
CD-R PX-R820T
CD-R PX-W4220T (recently reconfirmed)
CD-R PX-W8220T (recently reconfirmed)
CD-R PX-W124TS (recently reconfirmed)
CD-R PX-W8432T
CD-R PX-W1210S (recently reconfirmed)
CD-R PX-W

Internal(?) on the VS-2000CD, -2400CD and -2480CD
MATSHITA --
UJDA330
UJDA340

There are more recent drives which will work as internals.

I'd like that info as well.

External drives are hooked up through the SCSI port on a 2480.
It doesn't have to be an actual SCSI hard drive, but needs to be installed in a SCSI case. The bridge connector to whatever form the hard drive is would be connected internally between the hard drive and SCSI connector. Typical has been IDE hard drive to SCSI. I have no idea how well others might work (ie. SATA to SCSI).

Juliet modified his vs2400cd unit to be hooked up to a eSATA dock external as the unit doesn't have SCSI. It will be workable for the 2480 as well. Internal IDE > SATA > eSATA bracket > eSATA cable > eSATA dock > 2.5" laptop drive.

http://blog.madbrain.com/2011/10/adding-esata-capability-to-roland-vs.html?m=1

I basically did an IDE>SATA in the vs2480HD hardrive caddy so I guess mine is removable as well.

The Brett LaCroix VS Song Vault DVD burner is the only external dvd burner I've ever known of that was available.

It's not just a matter of which dvd burner is compatible, the other challenge is the converter card.
