hello all! i signed up to ask about a VS-840EX i was thinking of buying. i did some research while waiting for my account to be approved, and now im not sure it will be all that useful for me. anyway my application was approved so ill go ahead and ask them anyway \:\)

im not planning to do a lot of multitrack recording on it and intend to use it mostly as a mixer, an extra fx unit, guitar practice tool, and mobile recorder..any thoughts as to the feasibility with regard to the above uses? i know it only has 4 inputs so i would be limited to 4 channels 'live'..can i apply fx to all 4 channels at the same time though? im interested primarily in the reverb, delay, compressor (eq doesnt count as an effect right? so i could eq a channel and add an effect to it?)

like i said, ive sort of decided against buying it, but its so cheap and comes with a sd card reader + 2gb card in place of the zip so thats one less headache..so at the very least, it might make a nice scratchpad with the resulting files later dumped to the computer. the cosm is a definite bonus

i appreciate any input!

i would think itd be pretty limited....the inputs are 1/4 not xlr....the fx on this box are nice, IMO the reverbs are very sweet...with a 2gb card its not a bad recorder, the cosm guitar sims are very good...

so to the questions posed as a mixer you could do it but there has to be many more small format mixers that alos have fx to choose....the global fx, think reverb would work across all channels, insert fx are on that one channel...

thanks for your reply! yes im aware of its limitations with regard to its use as a mixer but my needs are very modest. the idea of being able to record scratch tracks without a computer and at reasonably good quality is tempting..

It's super quiet with the cf card and the guitar sims and reverbs are nice...so good value for recorder, I expect these boxes go for sun US $50 these days...as a live mixer though that seems a stretch as mentioned with the 1/4 in ins vs xlr

The best use for a VS-840 is as an instrument mixer. The unit you are getting has the card modification which makes it more valuable but they really aren't worth recording more than scratches on.

But the f/x are nice if you have the room.
